  • Come along with us on a day trip to Bruges, Belgium from Brussels! 🇧🇪
    We’re starting our day off by navigating to the Brussels train station where we grab a train out to the tiny city of Bruges. 🚂 Bruges is unique in Europe because it wasn’t touched by either World War and all of the buildings are original. The tiny waterways that carve through the traditional Belgian houses give Bruges its iconic nickname, “The Venice of the North”! 🚤
    Our first stop in the city is the nearest waffle stand for sustenance as we explore in the wintry weather. 🧇 Then we’re off to find the Bruges windmills, twisting and turning through the tiny alleys and over countless bridges and canals. 🌬 After we finally find them we decide to head for the most popular site in all of Bruges, the Basilica of the Holy Blood. 🩸⛪️ This Basilica houses a fascinating relic said to be a bit of cloth that was used to clean Jesus’ body after his crucifixion. We end the day at a quaint little bar called Monk’s where we indulge in a Stella…or two. 😉🍻

    If you are in Belgium you should drink a special monk beer with alcohol percentages of 7 to 10 and not a Stella which Belgians drink everyday in their pubs/ cafés ! And about the weather: you are in the northern part of west Europe and in the cold months !

    • @marshallandaimee
      @marshallandaimee  Před rokem

      Haha, yes! We like both styles of beer. Sometimes it’s nice to have a refreshing Stella after all the heavier Belgian beers. 😅 We actually love cold, wet weather! 🌧 We we’re loving the weather in Bruges and having an excuse to hole up in a little bar. 😊

    the real reason it's called the venice of the north is that the venicians chose it as their exclusive trade post in the north in 1290. the Genuans chose Antwerp....eventually Antwerp ended up being the main port for trade between northern and southern Europe, and with the new world....

    It's interesting people keep comparing Venice and Bruges because of their canals. Yes sure, Bruges has some natural rivers, but it's not built on the water or whatever. The comparison between Bruges and Venice dates from way back when Bruges was, like Venice, a major economic trading hub. Hence the "Venice of the North".

    • @marshallandaimee
      @marshallandaimee  Před rokem

      You're right! They're very different. I think people love to make the comparison between the two because they're *kind of* similar. Nothing really compares to Venice in the end but we still loved Bruges and the little canals! 🙂

      @@marshallandaimee Venice (in the south) couldn't be there in 100 years time as it is slowly sinking. Bruges on the other hand stands firm on Belgian soil.

    Thanks for giving my town some more exposiuor.... Ben we don't. Pre-Covid we hat 8 million tourists a year. For a town of 75.000 people, 8 million is a tad too much. We hate the fact that every single store in the city center is gerared towards you... the tourists. And not a single store is geared towards us, the people who actually live here.... Juuuust saying

    • @marshallandaimee
      @marshallandaimee  Před 4 měsíci

      We’ll warn the other 7,999,999 people to stay away for ya! Our little CZcams channel certainly isn’t the reason so many people go there. Shops are going to be geared towards tourists in a touristic town. That’s where the money is and unfortunately that’s the way the world works. Juuuust saying

    • @Erulin68
      @Erulin68 Před 4 měsíci

      @@marshallandaimee Not anymore though. When opening a new store in the city center you can't gear it to tourist now. Not having enough regular shops and stores were forcing the locals to 'have' to have a car to go do their shopping outside the city center, which if you've been to Brugge you must have noticed hardly has any parking outside of three large unground parkings that are usually full
