This summer was truly a summertime sadness for me. My summers have always felt empty, lonely and well, sad. But this summer made me feel the loneliest. On the 12th of June, my best friend passed away unexpectedly to cancer. She was fine the day before, playing around in the garden and acting as per usual. Sitting with her toys at her favorite spot in the garden. Just being her usual goofy self. This dog was my childhood friend, we got her when I was 8 years old, almost 9. I always thought that she'd be here on my 18th birthday but she was off by a couple of months... She was a rottweiler, a beautiful one at that. I'd even be bold and say that she was the perfect rottie, at least in my eyes. She was slim but built with beautiful, visible muscle, something in which she got from her dad. She never quite had those 'puppy' eyes either. She looked mature, reminding me of military dogs and that somehow made her prettier. She was my protector and dearest friend. She passed away 4 days before her 9th birthday and left behind her older big sister, both who loved each other so much. I never thought she'd go before her big sister, who was 3 years older than her. Worst of all is that I did not get the chance to say goodbye. When I was little and I had no friends at school and nobody knew that anything was wrong, she would wait for me at home, by the window for hours. She somehow knew that I wasn't okay and that something was very wrong. She'd wait until I came home and would only rest knowing that I was safe. She did this until school started going better for me. I even told my mom that I wish I could bring her to school because then I would at least have one friend there. It has been rough ever since she passed away. I still cry, in fact yesterday was harder than usual. But one day we closed the garage without realizing that she was right there. We rushed her to the vet but there wasn't anything they could do. We buried her that night. Her name was Cassie, after the constellation Cassieopia. I miss her so, so much. But I know, that if she were here, she'd bring a smile to my face. And that's how I'm going to remember her. Not the day she passed, but the life she lived. I hope that's how you remember your dog too.
