  • Get a complete rundown of all of my top restaurants I ate at on my latest trip to Tokyo (東京), Japan where you'll get a sneak peek of the mouthwatering food that we had and what you can expect when you come here as you plan your very own trip. WARNING: Do not watch if already extremely hungry as it may result in hangry-ness.
    The full guide is on the blog: goingawesomeplaces.com/ultimat...
    As one of the largest cities in the world and a super metropolis at that, there are over 160,000 restaurants to choose from. With limited time in Tokyo, the challenge then becomes picking which ones to go to on your visit. The other challenge is that there are also so many different types of food as well so you have to think strategically. While I certainly didn't get even close to going to all the food spots we had planned, I was very happy with all the restaurants we went to. What I've done is put together a top 9 list for all the amazing food we had and a behind the scenes look at why you should go and order.
    Here are all of the restaurants that are featured in this video:
    1. Uoriki Kaisen Sushi (海鮮 魚力 渋谷東急東横店) - 0:20
    2. Shin Udon (慎) - 2:12
    3. Piss Alley/Memory Lane (Omoide Yokocho - 思い出横丁) - 4:06
    4. Motodane (本種) - 5:36
    5. Tempura Shinjuku Tsunahachi Ginza (天ぷら新宿つな八 銀座店) - 7:28
    6. Tokyo Station Ramen Street - Rokurinsha Ramen (六厘舎) - 9:44
    7. Nakaya (仲家) - 12:09
    8. Yakitori Ton Ton (登運とん) - 13:54
    9. Sometaro Okonomiyaki (染太郎) - 16:05

    Hi Will!
    Your video randomly came up in my recommendations and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. I haven’t been to any of the places you mentioned but my bf and I have Motodane and Nakaya on our bucket list.
    I actually am a Japanese living in Tokyo (for over 2 decades lol😂 I’m Toronto bred also haha, Nice repping the Jays cap!) and have yet to explore so much of what this city has to offer. (If ever you guys are in Tokyo again, and want sushi, try Sushi no Midori (my bf’s recommendation) or if you’re in the mood for Wagyu, Maruushi Meat:))
    Best wishes on your future traveling!

    While only a few of these places interest me personally (I dont drink and Im personally not a huge fan of most seafood sadly) I actually really like the fact that, while you do recommend these places you are honest about any short comings you find with them. When people just gush about how perfect a place is it makes me wonder how honest they are being or maybe there are other factors making them biased with out realizing it. Good video and Ill keep these places in mind on my trip.

    A big thanks for the tips on 1 and 6 which I went to on my trip to Tokyo. The sushi place in Shibuya was a bit of a bugger to find, as it’s at the back of a big bottom floor shopping section where they sold bento and other sushi, but it was melt in the mouth sushi and such great and friendly service. It was actually my favourite sushi stop of the tour. And the Tsukemen from Rokurinsha; well I am still thinking about it now and when I visit Tokyo again will make another stop there.

    • @GoingAwesomePlaces
      @GoingAwesomePlaces  Před 5 lety

      Yes absolutely! I don't speak any Japanese either so we were able to make do. Most of these restaurants have an English menu that you can point to. If not, there are either pictures, you can point at what other people are eating, OR worse case, we played a game of charades :) Embrace it and you'll have a great time despite not knowing the language.

      I was inspired by Migrationlogy as he had a ton of great spots picked out. So the funny thing is that unless you're at a hotel or you're staying at a traditional Ryokan, I found breakfast to be not really a thing. Most restaurants open up at 11 and so often times we just skipped breakfast and went straight for lunch food. If you're at the airport or train station, there'll be things to buy and perhaps ramen shops might be open in those high traffic areas??

    • @GoingAwesomePlaces
      @GoingAwesomePlaces  Před 5 lety +2

      Hi Fernanda! Okay so about the trains, yes the map when you first look at it is CRAZY complicated right. What makes it really confusing is how different companies own different lines and so unless you know the system really well, it's really hard to say whether you're only going to be sticking to the Tokyo Metro/Toei vs JR vs other. The easiest thing to combat that is to just get one of those IC cards like PASMO or SUICA. Load it up with money and just tap away. That way you don't have to worry about day passes or buying tickets to just one company. Hope that helps!

For onigiri, we honestly loved the ones we got from the convenient stores such as 7-Eleven and Family Mart. • @GoingAwesomePlaces

      That's a good question. I would say on average, the answer would be no but it really is different for each place. For example, in Tsukiji, Nakaya definitely didn't have any bathrooms but Motodane did. A sit down place like Tempura Shinjuku Tsunahachi definitely did but Yakitori Ton Ton didn't. So maybe a rule is - if it's a more street-food or bar-like it's likely no but if it's a sit down restaurant, it's a yes.

    as a japanese native, I have a couple of suggestions: 1. sushi must be eaten whole, not to be bitten off in half, that is considered quite rude. 2. dip just a little bit of the fish side of nigiri into soy sauce, turn it upside down and put it into your mouth with fish side on your tongue, not rice. also, most high end sushi places paints soy sauce on top so no need for soy sauce, and they serve some nigiri with salt, so it's ready to eat. 3. i'd be careful about talking and filming in some smaller places, that is usually pretty frowned upon, and you really shouldn't be filming and uploading other people on you tube unless you've gotten their permission which I doubt. most japanese food bloggers mosaic out other patrons in restaurants or servers unless they have permission, and make sure to ASK if they can film or even take pics/videos before you start, some places have a policy against it.

    Rokurinsha is probably my favorite ramen spot in Tokyo, more than Tsuta and Nakiryu. Their tsukemen is my favorite, it's sad that you guys didn't like it. Was just wondering though did you try to putting yuzu extract on the broth and adding hot water to thin it? It takes that broth to a whole new level.
