What Louie is saying is correct. Hershey's uses "butyric acid" as a milk preservative to give it a longer shelf life. Butyric acid is also found in vomit and gives chocolate a slightly sour taste that Americans no longer notice.

So insane. I’ve always hated Hershey’s chocolate bars because they taste of sweetened bile to me and people thought I was nuts. When I found out that yeah, there’s some stomach acid shit in there, I felt validated.
So that’s why Hershey’s has that weirdly sweet/sour “barfy” taste to it???

My friends mom used to travel to Canada for work (we are like a 8 hour drive from the border) and would always bring us back Kinder eggs in the 90's. My heart broke when I realized it wasn't just something we could get here. I distinctly remember a tiny fridge toy that I got one time.

So its candy that is preserved to last longer but tastes different than candy crafted to die soon but be best. It's whatever your use to. Whether you refrigerate or stuff sits outside at room temp, different diseases for different squeezes.

It's not the chocolate,is the fact that US chocolate makers use a process on the milk called Lipolysis that produces butyric acid which gives it that sour-ish taste to it. Try milk chocolate from any other country in the world where they don't do that and it will taste different. Oh and in Puerto Rico Chocolate Cortez sells chocolate bars and one of them is chocolate and coffee.
And it's because of how big America is and I think the travel time from the diary farms to the chocolate factories or something that made it difficult to make milk chocolate with just regular milk? It's been awhile since I read about it
