  • Bad photos are inevitable, but they aren't inherently a bad thing

one of the first rolls of film I shot was expired kodak ultramax 400 and it came with the film camera my grandma gave me for what ever reason she didn't finish off the roll of film and left it sitting in her closet for 15 years until I found the camera and started using it, anyway the pictures I took on the roll were bad some were good but 15 years in a closet is not good for film and there were weird color shifts and made for interesting pictures and I think there is a beauty to bad photos and I think its an art style on its own!

Poor photos can arguably be divided into two causations. One is simple lack of technical command of the medium, this can be inability to determine proper exposure for a photo, holding the camera crooked, failure to understand how the camera or film works, as too light or dark in exposure, or defective processing where you DIY. The other is being just an uninteresting waste of photo materials, trying to pass as a print. This can be being lack of meaningful composition, lack of subject by omission, or lack of subject by trying to include "everything". This harder to evaluate because so much of it can be subjective. It's also made harder because on YT, there is a common appreciation that if the technicals are okay, failures of "the second kind" are validated as a difference of opinion or an expression of the makers "art". It seems taboo to say that a photo is just, plain, boring or uninteresting because its content is not well assembled. Some YT photo channels with large followings are examples of this failure. They are not that hard to identify, as the output of photos all look like snapshots. Take away the video context, and you probably couldn't tell if they were taken with a Kodak Starmatic box camera or a Mamiya 7. So, bad photos are only important if you call them out. For better or worse, social media, including YT, is not a medium where that often happens, and that is not so good for photography.

Great timing for this vid ^^. Just finished my first film stock ever. Kinda scared to let it get developed.
Would u ever consider making a vid about the basics?
