Chill Beats the last game I programmed ended up having the same unexpected behavior. In fact, a lot of games have prop flying like this. I haven’t thought about it too hard but it’s really not super easy to account for programming wise.

I worked for a company that took contracts for Microsoft and was part of the test team for Nuts and Bolts. That glitch was DEFINATELY something the dev team was aware of, they just told us they didn't care. we had a lot of fun in between tests with it.

Unreal has Portal capabilities (even UT'99 had them) and while they are underused in vanilla maps, a usermade maps can be created where 2 portals are perpendicular to each other (can't make them look at each other without glitching the game), so there would be a position where player could see themselves from the side, and thus snipe their own head off.

I've got one for that I discovered when I was a kid (we're talking 20-25 years ago). In the genesis game boogerman if you press ABC+start on the second controller it enters a debug mode where boogerman can go anywhere on the screen. I learned that bit from a geocities cheat code site long long ago. Well I tried doing the code right after you beat the end boss and was treated to an easter egg where two guys suddenly walk out and start waving. There was no reference anywhere online at the time, so I emailed the geocities site and they added it to their page. I remember screaming when I saw it, like I just found hidden treasure.

I mean... I get it, kids of a certain age think that kind of humor's really awesome. It's a psychological stage. But that's gotta be up there with Captain Underpants as a 100% guarantee nobody over the age of 11 would ever be caught dead playing it. And for younger kids who have to ask their parents to buy them stuff, I know a LOT of moms who'd instantly say "I'm not buying you a game about a man who plays with boogers. Pick something else."

The Half Life 2 ERROR thing is probably least "secret" thing in wider context of people modding source engine, having community content in source based games or just playing garry's mod for more than 2 hours, given these situations are prone to sometimes cause the same ERROR model to be loaded as it always placeholds any model-objects missing from your game that is instructed to load. Garry's mod servers with added stuff usually will end up showing you the model a lot.

@@w7jonb wrong, as both use same assets and same handling for missing content. The ERROR model isn't a huge inside joke or anything. It simply is loaded instead if the Source engine game fails to load the instructed model. All valve's games have this behaviour, except maybe DOTA2

The "ERROR" one is a default model that appears when the model needed is missing or corrupted. It appears in almost all hl2 based games, including Team Fortress 2 and Portal 2.
Personally I use a gigantic flashing red arrow (and I really do mean gigantic -- You can see it from 2000 units away.) so it is completely impossible to miss when a model is messed up. When textures are missing I make them flash, make them purple, and draw them on top of everything else.

I miss the early Gmod days.
The days where you never had to own every Valve game 20 times just to function.
The ones where the most you had to do was connect and it downloaded any mods needed and IT WORKED.
The days of fun wiremod and laser contraptions.
The days of making vehicles where all parts are anchored to an exploding barrel and seeing how long you could survive in a deathmatch against each other, or an assault course where one wrong move would push a car piece through the barrel.
The fun times with space builds, especially when you combined it with the forcefield generator mod (forgot it's exact name) where you could make a forcefield that extends over the entire Spacebuild map and make it nullify all gravity, then you added a generator on each planet to add gravity back so you get semi-realistic space.
And, can't forget the classic Rube Goldberg machines. Oh and saw-blade launchers. And fucking around with the filters for like an hour and never touching them again. Ever. Besides maybe that really neat wavy white one.
And laser-powered engines in spaceships because FUCK physics.
Gmod is atrociously bad now. Shitty game-modes and no creativity.
And to pre-empt the inevitable: No, Rust is not a replacement. It's worse than Gmod NOW, never mind back then.
Sorry Garry, but it's shite. You somehow made a worse engine than Valve did.
There are some horrible fundamental flaws with the game engine that makes it not fun unless you simply want to troll, which doesn't last long in terms of enjoyment.

the message about sniping yourself in the head is a classic game developer thing. you've got some script handling player death that takes in damage and spits out messages about what happened. there's a block of code in there that evaluates the damage sources. the coder knows it's not possible to hitscan yourself in the head, but if you don't provide a value to return the engine might not like it, or you'd get an ugly killfeed, etc. the guy writing that case was just goofing off, and it's great.

In Paper Mario 64, if you skip chapter 1 and reach southern toad town early, on the Japanese version, all of the NPCs will have unique dialogue, saying stuff like, "this message shouldn't appear, tell me if it does" and "this message shouldn't appear, I'll be scared if it does"
I love how they throw cheese at you at 2:00 as kind of symbolism that you are, quite literally, cheesing the game.
On the very first day I played Banjo - Kazooie Nuts & Bolts I found out accidentally as I was playing how to use a box or bench to get up to places otherwise unreachable at the time. I was amazed! And wondered why they didn't disguise it very well... But it was awesome!

2:55 It is possible to do it, because the message was originally intended for when an entity is attacked that has the same 'ID class' as the player, either by glitch or some other reason. The game gets "confused" and simply kills all entities ("entities" including the player in this instance) with that class and reconciles this by assuming that the player 'shot themselves', even though that should not be possible under normal working parameters, as you stated.
I just realized the Banjo exploit is the same as the Breath of the Wild minecart exploit hahahaha

Technically it could happen for any number of reasons. Bad install, weird ass bug; just requires her model to go missing.
i think the quirk there was the fact that the game keeps running correctly even missing bits... mostly
I think the weird part is if the model was correctly loaded she just walks normally, but if there is the placeholder error, it just teleports instead of "walking". That was odd.

2019 and I still play Jade Empire. It's one of BioWares best creations in my opinion. Harness chi and use elements to fight, heal yourself or turn into a demon, use focus to slow time and fight or use weapons. Recruit various allies and traverse maps with a bad ass combat system.

The error thing isn't special, it's just the source engine's default missing content placeholder

well I mean Jade Empire isn't exactly exploit punish... without exploit you have one in a million chance to trigger it (according to wiki it needs 20 times)...
