Thank God they left Cosell in Washington. Bucky Dent 1:58:00 with a loaded bat, according to Mickey Rivers. Game was also televised on the Yankees station, channel 11 in NYC with their announcers. Keith Jackson really painted the picture.
October 2, 1978 was the second day of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year. I was 8 years old, listening to the game on the radio in my parents' Pontiac Bonneville en route to my grandparents' house in Maplewood, NJ when Bucky Dent hit that home run. We got there in the middle of Boston's rally in the bottom of the 8th inning. I remember running into their house to turn their TV on...
Look at those high tech graphics. Thank you for including the commercials. This is amazing. Like a time capsule. I was alive, but 3, so the nostalgia is real.
Was 13 at the time & watched this as it happened. I was loyal to my Indians which was not easy so I also came to be a fan of actual great teams like the Red Sox & Yankees. I could enjoy who ever won. Though I felt bad for the Sox because I thought 78 was their year until they fell apart at the end which is what made this game possible then losing. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire game.
While not getting tagged for either devastating loss, Bob Stanley was on the mound for the winning runs in this game and game 6 of the 1986 world series.
The Red Sox won the coin toss to determine home field advantage for this Game. Had head to head records been used the Yankees would have hosted the game as they won the season series 8-7.
thanks for posting this; I recognize I might be biased, but, I can not think of another team in recent memory with personalities like this; fun time to be a Yankee Fan
It actually didn’t matter whether or not Bucky Dent’s drive was a home run or hit high off the wall. Rivers walked and Munson doubled to follow so the score would have still been 4-2.
@@tishtashtishtash It's not guaranteed that both runners would've scored had Dent's drive hit the wall. There might have been a play at the plate and Roy White might have been thrown out. But even if they did both score, Having a runner on base changes many things, including pitch selection, so we don't whether Rivers would've walked or Munson would've doubled. The inning could just as easily have ended 2-1 Red Sox or tied 2-2.
Was this your own home recording? There is one other ABC home recording that's been out for years in not good quality and an archival copy that switches to the Yankee telecast for the middle innings. The full Yankee telecast is also accounted for which leaves the Red Sox telecast (Stockton-Harrelson) the only one not in circulation (but it does exist in the MLB vault since clips from it have been used in documentaries). All three radio broadcasts (Yankees, Red Sox, CBS) are also available on YT.
@@drummerboy74 Are you familiar with Dave Volsky's Back Door? He cleans up and upgrades old sports footage with amazing results. He could probably work wonders with this....

This one game playoff at Fenway Park was one of the greatest games I ever seen...

👍👍👍👍LONG time Cubs fan. but I LOVE these old games. the 70's, 80's and 90's. were the best decades of MLB.
Came home from school and joined in progress. The summer of 1978 was unforgettable with some great memories.
Pure baseball. Pure baseball broadcasting.
What a team the 1978 Yankees. 😊
You can say the exact same thing about the 1978 Red Sox.
I'll never forget this game until my dying day.

What a joy to watch. Thank you for posting.
2:41:45 Love the way the broadcast captures the audio of George Steinbrenner clapping....That is awesome.

‘ya keep the married me off the infield right here’, Don Drysdale, bottom 6th, with Rice batting.
Wow. This copy is much sharper than the other ABC telecast available. What great quality. And a tremendous call by Jackson and Drysdale.
Thank you for this, as someone who was a young baseball fan living in Massachusetts this event became a where was you event that day.
1978 has to be the most magical season in Yankees history.
Still hurts here in Massachusetts.
Man those were better days…

Where's Howard Cosell? Thanks for sharing this btw, historical treasure.
In Washington D.C. for Monday Night Football
@paulsonj72 that's right, this was a Monday afternoon game.
@@frankpalancio8471 After the football game Howard flew to Kansas City for the ALCS which opened the next night
I wish you had the TV38 broadcast of this game.
It does exist in the MLB vault, but it's never been used for replays.

If that ball skips by Pinella in the 9th, it's a triple and a whole different ballgame. Game is tied and Rice wins it on a SAC fly.
Game of inches.
That gets by Pinella, that's gonna be an inside the park home run, Remy had wheels, game over

It’s not guaranteed those events would’ve still played out with Dent on first vs in the dugout having already scored the run.

This was a recording my uncle taped from the TV in 78. He passed away a few years ago and I got his VHS tapes. I’ve been uploading them to CZcams!
@@drummerboy74 Thank you very much for doing so! This is a valuable addition to existing recordings of this game.

when ballplayers were men....
Men played the game before and after. But I get your drift….
You all came here for one reason.... 1:58:36 .... ;-)
One of the most famous homeruns in baseball history.
Hit by somebody who didn't hit a lot of them
Bucky F-ing Dent
The characters on these teams is so great to see. By comparison today’s players are bland and scripted.
