- In this video, I'm aiming to find the best cheap rum for $20. I am blind tasting 6 big brand rums, doing a rum comparison, then aiming to hopefully find the best value for money rum on the market.

Big fan of appelton signature, its great for the price and available at my local grocery store.
I'm with you on the Bacardi rums. the 8 & 10 are great rums
I appreciate the effort you put into your videos Steve. Keep up the great work.
Somewhat serious rum guy here, my fav region is Barbados and Jamaica. Fav rum of all time has to be Diplomatico Ambassador. A sublime treat if you have the $.
Appleton is a star of course. I have tried 50, Joy, 30, 21, 12 (12 is hands down one of the best rums in the world for the price), and just ordered a Signature for rum n coke duties.
I usually go a bit more pricey, I like Pussers Gunpowder, Dictador XO, RL Seale etc, but then I cringe at wasting good rums with coke lol. I havnt tried the 8 yet, so I need to get some.
If its Appleton, you cant go wrong I think. Some other rums are better, punchier, funkier, but Appleton dont make a junk rum. For folks getting into rum, Appleton is a great place to start.
Love the Appleton signature. Was going to try the 8 year version but might go for the chairman reserve after this video!
Love my Wray and Nephew. You cannot get more flavor (and abv) for the money. I mostly mix it (add 4 dashes of bitters, a barspoon of honey syrup, and an orange peel to an ounce of wray and nephew served at room temp for a fantastic sipper).
Just realized this was probably supposed to be a dark rum pick. Whatever... Gotta love that Plantation Dark.
Love the bicardi 8yo. I have chairman's reserve spiced and it's a way better rum than the supermarket main sellers
Appleton signature is a great mixer for any occasion in my opinion. It's got a tiny bit of funkiness without absolutely blasting some of your more sensitive guests with Jamaica.
Also slightly unrelated, I just picked up a bottle of OFTD and it had the new branding bottle already (Southeastern US) and was surprised that it switched so quickly.
I have been able to find Pusser's original (not the gunpowder proof) for $22 where I am and I really have been enjoying that rum quite a bit.
Appleton for mixing and Plantation Double Cask neat👍
I'm loving your entourage Steve with Silent Jay and camera shy Mummy B! 🤣
Dunno why people are so scared of a Camera 🤷♂️😂
Favorite budget sipper would be RL 10 or OFTD here in the states
Hey Steve, love the video! Where I am, there is almost a 15 usd difference between the appleton signature and 8 year. As someone just getting started on their rum journey and who would use it as a cocktail rum, do you think the increased price for the 8 year is worth it?
Honestly…starting out level, No. But maybe a year from now, yeah you’ll notice a huge difference. It’s just the subtle extra flavour it brings in Cocktails.
Did Plantation change its name??
Yup. Planteray.
What's your opinion on the 57.1 ABV navy strength version of the eclipse released a few months ago, seems to have a rave reception from quite a few people online.
Not released in the UK to my knowledge.
Flavored rums have displaced many interesting cheap rums from the shelves. It’s a great way for a big brand like Bacardi (their rum smells of benzene, at least to me) to colonize shelf space and kick off the competition. (Anyone who drinks flavored rum is a child in an adult’s body, and unintentionally an enemy of anyone who likes good booze.)
I used to get 1-liter bottles of a high-proof white agricole rhum from I think Martinique for quite a reasonable price. Impossible to get now, and most agricoles available are quite expensive.
Cane-juice rums in general are more to my liking and Demerara rums like Diamond usually aren’t too expensive. There’s something called Cane Run that’s cheap and I guess drinkable, but it doesn’t really taste like a cane-juice rum to me, though not quite like a molasses either. I’m not sure what it could actually be.
Havana 7 is amazing regarding both quality and flavour profile, for me it would be in the top 3.
For now my sweet spot is 27 euros. I can get havana or flor de cana (both 7yo) a like, here where I live. Very good rums to sip neat. Next one i'm gonna try sipping is the Havana Club Anejo Especial, I can get it here for 20euros.
Need so the same with white rum
In the US, Flor de Cana 4 year is about $30/1.75 liters. Plantation 3 star is $38/1.75 liters. Wray and Nephew Overproof is $48/1.75 liters. The 750 ml bottles are roughly half the price. They are three very different white rums and really all you need for that category.
The Flor De Cana 7 is not 7 years old, nor do they claim it to be, as they removed the word "anos"(years) from after the 7, years ago, while Bacardi 4 is, as it states on the label aged four years and the ocho states it is actually aged 8 years.
Worthy park select cheaper than Appleton on MOM and for me a lot tastier.
Yeah…I purely didn’t feature it because it’s not available in the US…yet…
I have never met anyone who likes this newer eclipse, lol. And when mixed it tends to disappear. I liked Mount Gay better before they changed them all up some years back.
Never knew they changed anything, just knew I went off it a few years back.
They changed all the recipes of the blends back in 2020, there's younger rum in the blends now among other changes@@alittlebitgone
Where's your square bear, eh?
Appleton Signature
Rumfire (mic drop)
Remember that Bacardi you are tasting is not available in the US. American Bacardi is a very different beast.
Wait, why not?? Since when?! Don’t forget Bacardi is Puerto Rico. It hasn’t been Cuban for decades! Pretty sure we’re drinking the same stuff! In fact I think you’ll find Bacardi sold nearly 7million litres of it in the US last year 🧐
