  • Hi Nico here!
    I am going to talk about the most common mistakes I see foreigners make in Palermo.
    1. Trusting TripAdvisor
    2. Going to the first random bar or club
    3. Not planning an itinerary
    4. Thinking that here we eat only street food and pizza
    5. Not having fully comprehensive car insurance
    6. Relying completely on public transport
    7. Expecting to be served professionally
    8. Assuming that everyone speaks English
    9. Visiting Palermo only in warm seasons
    10. Last of all, ordering foreign wine

    We visited Palermo last month. The young lady checking us in told us that many of the locals go to the Vucciria area at night. We headed there and found some good food. I try to find restaurants with no English on the menu and that seems to work as the ones with English aren't always very good. I do the best with my broken Italian (I'm improving all the time). I was very surprised that I liked Palermo so much and look forward to visiting again.

    This is very informative. I have visited Palermo dozens of times but hardly ever as a tourist. I used to visit my relatives often in nearby Aspra, staying in my mother's house so I would visit Palermo frequently, I love Palermo. I would either go with friends or relatives or hop on the train from Bagheria to go shopping and see the sights. Knowing how Palermo works, this is excellent advice. I have friends here in California that ask me about visiting Palermo so next time I will direct them to your channel.

    hope English will work - not able to speak Italian much. Just able to sing some songs after listening them a thousand times :D

    • @WeArePalermo
      @WeArePalermo  Před rokem +1

      Ciao! Prestia & Comandè is the shuttle bus company that takes you from the airport to the city center and back. You have the option to purchase your ticket either online at www.prestiaecomande.it/en/ or directly at the airport. Most tourist locations have staff who speak basic English, which allows you to make orders, get basic directions, and buy tickets without any issues. However, don't expect to have extended conversations. A helpful suggestion is to use simple words and speak at a slow pace when communicating with locals, as they may have trouble understanding fast speech. By speaking slowly, you increase the likelihood of being understood and make it more comfortable for the locals to communicate with you. Alternatively, you might try singing an Italian song for them. I'm sure they will appreciate it :) A presto!

    • @WeArePalermo
      @WeArePalermo  Před měsícem +1

      Sure, street food at markets is generally safe and fresh. When it comes to buying fresh raw fish, though, it helps to know a bit about the fish to pick the freshest one. They're not spoiled or bad, but knowing the fish will help you spot the very freshest options

    Exactly! All these people do videos about being a tourist and the tourist prices and being treated like a tourist. Boring. If you want to have a taste of how life is you need "local knowledge". Thanks for making this video.
    I find it ridiculous that people travel to old countries with incredible knowledge of wine making and they pay for an imported bottle of ... Travel 10: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."

    I have learned a little Italian and dressing like an Italian couple instead of tourists we have never had anything but the best experiences. It helps that while we are not Italians we look Italian, My wife could pass for Sicilian especially when she dresses in her favourite colour....black. I disagree about a strict itinerary....wander and be amazed at what you discover.

  • @olly1oo6

    If you visit Palermo you need to be comfortable with the smell of shit and urine everywhere. You also need to be OK with seeing stacks of garbage piled high in the streets, constantly tripping over waste on the ground, and people trying to run you over as you cross any pedestrian crossing because they just don't care. You also need to be comfortable with being charged double just because you're a tourist, and being aggressively followed and yelled at by people trying to sell you things.
    If you're OK with all of that, it's a pretty interesting city.
    But if you're not - there are a lot of other amazing old cities in the world with incredible histories and a lot of charm, where the people are less aggressive, and can clean up after themselves.
