Today we visited the Naples Zoo. Hurricane Ian hit Southwest Florida and Naples just five weeks ago, and we found that a lot of the animals that were evacuated from the Zoo before the storm were still at remote shelters while the Zoo repairs their habitats. But there were still plenty of interesting animals, attractions and boat rides to see. We also found that all the islands in the lake (Lake Victoria) were underwater for days due to the storm surge from Hurricane Ian.
The Naples Zoo is a 43-acre zoo and historic botanical garden. The first plantings were done by botanist and ornithologist Dr. Henry Nehrling in 1919. The gardens were neglected after Nehrling's death in 1929. In the 1950s, Julius Fleischmann, (Fleischmann Yeast), added new plantings, created lakes and a pathway, and introduced parrots and waterfowl and opened as Caribbean Gardens in 1954. After his passing in 1968, the exotic animals were introduced in 1969 by Larry and Jane Tetzlaff, aka "Jungle Larry" and "Safari Jane". Places to go see Naples, Florida. Things to do see Naples Fl.

We're so happy to see this beautiful zoo in pretty nice shape, considering the circumstances. Sad to think the of the islands underwater! Interesting critter at that I would call an aardvark, but I've never seen one that big. A beautiful zoo, great boat tour and wonderful video. Loved it! Thanks for bringing us along.

The Naples Zoo is on the small side, but is fun to go to. And the boat ride is great . There are 12 little islands in the lake where all kinds of primates live. Have a great week.

Hello, Anna & Alf. We understood that they pretty much evacuated the zoo before the storm, some of the animals went to the zoo's hospital to wait out the storm, and some went to other facilities. This is a very nice zoo, great boat tour. It's good to see that the zoo is open and so many people visiting and enjoying themselves. It's great to hear that all the animals are safe, and they were able to find temporary shelters for all the animals prior to hurricane Ian. We always enjoy seeing the little kids feeding the animals and having such a good time.
