In todays video we look at installing a new trailer toolbox on the tongue. Will it work? should it have been metal? The install starts very well and goes down hill.
The box I do like but I have my reservations about using sheet metal screws.
There is plenty of room for tow straps, jacks, chocks, and more in the Dee Zee DZ 91717P - Dee Zee Specialty Series Triangle Trailer Toolboxes
    www.summitracing.com/parts/DZ...
Would you get a box like this for a trailer? What do you think of using sheet metal screws to attach this, or would you use something else?
    Let me know your thoughts?

I just drilled holes large enough to accommodate 5-16/18 bolts and added washers and hex nuts down underneath.
It was an easy 10 minute install---

I have the same trailer box. No regrets after 3 years.

Wont that weaken the tongue by drilling holes in it?

Nice job persevering in getting the storage box installed on your trailer. A little tip from an older viewer: Soft metal screws and lags are not hardy enough to drill/tap into hardened steel like your trailer tongue. I would recommend drilling and tapping the hole with the correct size tap. That would allow you to then use hardened machined bolts. Best of luck with your property and your RK25!

I learned exactly what you said! The supplied screws - just too soft. I had purchased a harbor freight tap set, but I had too many problems with tolerances on it and decided to return it. thanks!

That was an experience to learn new words! If I were doing it over again I would have gone larger and put in bolts and nuts! Thanks for watching!

I am looking to purchase a box for my trailer. I’m on the fence to which I want, metal/plastic. Is your plastic box holding up? I’m talking about warping, cracking or leaking. Thank you for your help!

Hi James, I had a plastic box as you saw in the video. I'm not sure which I would go with. I sold that trailer and the box went with it. It was farily easy to damage but it was also easy to fix. A heat gun/torge and you could use hot glue to repair. Too much weight on top and it would crack at the seems. Someone borrowed the trailer and it was jack knifed and by a bumper on a truck. Again, heat gun got it back into shape.
      Overall it worked.

Great vid!!!!; worst factory screws for frames - brittle, standard and way too course of a thread and they do no cut sh#t! For viewers, do yourselves a favour and drill the 3/16th holes as directed and pick up some tougher "self-tapping" screws. (Mine were free because i got them from a specialty shop that normally sells them by the thousands.) $4 tops at local shops and they screw in very, very well! (I can't attach a pic to show the difference but "self-tap vs regular screw - the difference is immense - you still need a pilot hole for thicker metal like a frame) Slow and steady wins, don't drive them in like they owe you money - in and out like a tap does to clear the path of jammed up metal particles due to cutting. OR, use a nut and bolt if you can; even U-bolts. Either way, don't use the stock screws that came with the unit unless your frame is made from tin foil - they will break and you get to drill out the busted screws. The box is another story - it's amazing!!!!

You are right on. Those screws are terrible. Box not bad. I've had issues with mine but all user problems. someone borrowed the trailer and then jack knifed and the box took the brunt and broke plastic seems. I left the lid unlatched one time and it blew back and popped off the plastic rivets that attach it the body. Though they are easy to put back in. It's a matter of being more careful! Thanks for watching!
