Hey so! We've gotten quite a few comments about the game's humor recently. I want to re-stress a point I made in the video: I'm no authority on comedy and would never pretend to be. For all of my comments about not finding the game funny, I'm ultimately just one person, and if you got more out of the game's humor than me, that's 100% more power to you and I'm not here to tell you you're wrong or anything. I hope you enjoy the video regardless.
So, story time: My brother played this game when he was a kid and over the years he developed a passionate hatred for this game. So, being the caring younger brother that I am, I like to torture him with this game at every chance I get. So one day, I show him pizza tower, he's into it, he likes it. Then I go "Now you gotta see this level" "Fun farm, with special guest Mort the chicken" The smile banishes from his face as he stares at the screen in disbelief for like a full minute. God I love this videogame.

the thing I'm most shocked by is the fact Mort the Chicken existed before Pizza Tower, the game is so off the wall bonkers already I didn't even question Mort, I never heard of this game so I thought he was an original thing
The best part of this entire cameo is the name of the OST that plays in Fun Farm is called "Morts Farm" so it is very possible that Mort is canon to Pizza Tower
The problem is, there are clearly humans in Pizza Tower, such as Peppino and Mr. Stick, and according to this video, Mort the Chicken takes place in an alternate reality where humans are chickens, so why aren't Peppino and Mr. Stick chickens?
“WELCOME TO MORTIO WORLD!!” I really enjoyed your breakdown of the game’s plot. I never really considered that Mort is a mundane chicken in a world of humanlike chickens. It’s rather like how many depictions of Shockwave of _The Transformers_ show him as a stereotypical robot in a world of robots with highly varied personalities. A weird comparison, but it’s a weird game with a weird (and hilarious) cameo in another game. It works. XU
You know, with the popularity that Pizza Tower has, and the attention it has given to Mort the Chicken, it makes me wonder if any other indie developers will try and do the same thing. Now I'm imagining playing through the next part of Deltarune only to run into Croc at some point. Who knows what could happen at this point?
It kinda makes sense that the creators of Pizza Tower would make their singular special guest Mort the Chicken. Mort the Chicken has such an off the walls story (excluding the beginning and end) that it kinda fits the theme of, well everything in Pizza Tower. One look at the game and you could tell how wacky it is.
I remember those first three levels, Pyramid, Cathedral and the ice one, from an old PS1 demo disc. Is the game jank as hell? Yes. Is it weird and charming? Yes. It was also, bafflingly, by far the best game on that demo disc.
I actually really like the whole debug room aesthetic the game has going on, it kind of reminds me of when I played Roblox as a kid and most of the games looked like this, just eclectic arrangements of level assets to meet the bare minimum of a functional game, with little thought given to how it looks beyond it not being actively unpleasant to see. It's like the whole game is a peek behind the curtain, with the intentions of the developers laid bare.
Croc and the Legend of the Gobbos has a very similar field design as well. I'm not sure what inspired it other than feeling overwhelmed by the idea of creating a logical 2d track in a 3d enviroment.
Not even the devs. Both the devs and publishers were gone by the time that he asked, so the only person he had to ask was the character designer. He didn't really care so yeah.
This was a fun view at a funny (for it's existence if not for the actual comedy) game! This was my first time seeing one of your videos, and I really liked it, so great job! I hope you'll still release that Wario World retrospective btw, as I adore that game!

Could you consider doing a retrospective on a game called Metal Arms: Glitch in the system? Its a 2003 third person shooter released on the PS2 and GameCube that was critically acclaimed, but very unknown. It was one of my favorite games growing up, and I would love to see what others think of the game.
Honestly, when it comes to underrated classics, Metal Arms 100% comes to mind. Great characters, great split screen multiplayer, and I love its humour.
I really REALLY think you should give AndNow's other title a shot! Tiny Tank is just as honest as Mort is and it has a LOT to say in a very charming package. Its a mixed bag of a game but its also VERY memorable and given how unknown it is I think it'd make a really great video!
Okay so I decided to try it after all, and it's pretty okay with some tweaks. So follow these tips if you really, really wanna try it for some reason: 1) It seems the game has an Easy Mode enabled by default. Disable it. 2) There is a tally in the options menu, and while getting all the coins isn't strictly necessary to beat the level, the game becomes much more fun if you do. It seems the game was made trying to use Mario-like philosophy where the actually more fun challenges are for optional stuff. So go for 100%. 3) The reason controls are so weird is because it seems they were first designed for Dpad, and analog controls were implemented on top of that. I genuinely found the game plays much better with Dpad, rotating with triggers - sort of hybrid tank controls. It might take some getting used to, but controls make way more sense that way. 4) Game becomes a lot more fun if you run a self imposed challenge that you e.g. can only get hit three times (or even only once), or you reset the level. Considering how easy the game is, this is very much achievable and makes it way less mindless.
I think you're a bit too hard on Mort lol. It is an easy game for sure but it's also what we would call a "3rd party" game at the time since AAA (Triple A) wasn't in the lexicon at the time. These games were generally short and had to find ways to differentiate themselves compared to other games. That's why you see things like the extra large health bar and using most of the file space for cutscenes. On top of that, it was late in the PSX life, so it was made on a very small budget compared to a PS2 game being made around the same time. As for the Triangle button, this game wasn't made with the dualshock controller as the default. The default settings assumed you're playing with the original controller. So the triangle button is to move your camera if you didn't have anolog enabled
My brother seemed to have stumbled upon the nomenclature of "triple A", as well as "double A", "single A", and "B" back during the late SNES era. I suspect he picked it up from movies first, which is where triple A came from originally. This game would probably fall under B-sized since it doesn't have an A-list team, A-list director, nor an A-list studio behind it.
At around 9:30 in this video, the doctor of phycology: Carl Cockerel essentially calls us "featherless bipeds", which is a reference to Ancient Greece, in which Plato describes us in the same fashion.
The whole section about the humor of the game feels more subjective than anything else. Went a little harsh on that aspect, when it was genuinely funny throughout.
Man the memories flood back with this game, mind you I only played the Demo until I emulated it though PC a good ten years back though I didn't get far. I remember playing Mort the Chicken back on the Official US Playstation Magazine Disc #41 which came out in Feb 2001. I was 8 years old that year and my Dad gave me his PS1 for my birthday, he gave me a few game and the ones that stood out were Driver 2, 007: The World is not enough and My Favorite Spyro: Year of the Dragon, but that Demo Disc I had was worn out by the time I was done with it. This game enters my mind every once in a while and I Def have to stream it sometime in the future. Thats for this Blast from the past IDC how obscure this game is it really left and impression on me as a kid and is the reason I also have a taste for games that are Less than Triple A titles!

I can see myself playing mort the chicken and having fun. I can't see myself having fun playing bubsy, I wouldn't pay for it in the 2000s, but I would play this on steam on a sale and have a bit of a good time.
It's probably the best of its kind by still being a real game but being one you can't lose in. Your child will never beat the first level but they won't get a game over and cry about how hard the game is. Perfect game design honestly.
