    Glad Tom had a nice birthday and was able to just relax! You're right- as we get older our birthdays get to be less and less eventful, but in my opinion more meaningful. Can't wait to see what goodies you've received in your PO box!!!

    Actually I think it's the other way round as far as premature birth and eds are concerned. So it could be the eds itself that contributed to your premature birth. As you know eds is a genetic condition, meaning you already had it in the womb. It's not the genes that develop during gestation, but the fetus itself, based on information already defined by its genes!

    I was 2 weeks late and my sister was term, she’s only hypermobile (no pain or comorbidities, never dislocated anything or had any injuries) and my EDS is much more severe than hers. There’s no scientific connection between severity and when in the pregnancy you were born.

    I was 2 months premature and my mother was in labor for 96 hours.... and I have a rather severe case of EDS and also dysautonomia and gastroparesis requiring a feeding tube and a dual lumen mediport and get over 5 liters of fluid a week for the dysautonomia. (Currently have an NJ tube, but will be getting a surgical PEG-J tube at the end of August. And due to the fact that I had a spontaneous ruptured bowel and now have a colostomy, and have a ton of scar tissue and abdominal adhesions from the EDS, I will be getting the tube placed through an open laparotomy instead of a laparoscopic procedure. ) I also just wanted to thank you for going public with everything. I watch your videos all of the time and they help me a lot. You are incredibly brave and a wonderful person to put all of your struggles out. They help me cope so much because I have a lot of the same struggles. So thank you so much!

I notice you live near Perth. I live near Los Angeles in America and have a strong connection to Australia. I was in labor and delivery for 52yrs. but he was totally fine if you don't count the doc was too tired to do a c-section. He had a very long head and bells palsy for a yr. Now daughter was a 5 hrs labor & delivery (thanks to the nurses learned how to help) my daughter was born in Alaska, it was awesome. Forgot why I wrote this but it has to do with something Amy wrote. Sorry if I got off topic, it's what I have gone through that had to do with Amy.

    I was born a month early and was the first person in my family to be diagnosed with EDS. Everyone else at most has joints that pop a lot or knee caps that will occassionally dislocate. I deal with POTS, hernias, prolapses, daily vertebrae subluxations, asthma, migraines, congential heart and spinal deformities. I by far have the worst health in the family and am the only premie as far as I'm aware

    I wish Tom a big happy 24th birthday for Sunday. My mums labour with me was 8 hours. I came one week early and all my other siblings were at least 10 days late. I am the sickest with Hypermobility EDS but not as bad as you. I was in labour 18 hours with my daughter and needed an emergency caesarean. She was 15 days late and been healthier than I was at her age (18 years).

    I was an only child. My mom was in labor for days and had hard labor even though I was a averagely small baby 6 lbs 7 oz, but born within days of my due date. I was bow legged when I was born and allergic to all formulas and diagnosed w/asthma as 2 and everything went down hill with gi and dislocating early teens. Diagnosed with HEDS, mast cell and POTS 2 months ago at age 41. I do also find all this info interesting as this is all info they ask at the genetic appts so I feel there is a connection definitely!!!! Love you and your content. You helped me find my diagnoses and you keep me positive to keep going and I thank you.

    Happy Birthday Tom!!
    I have not been diagnosed with EDS, but I know I'm very double jointed and numerous issues. It's a possibility. Anyways, my sister has very minimal things, she was born full term, etc. I was born very sick and premature. So that does make sense. I need to ask my mother how long labor was. My son I was in labor for over 3-days. Numerous medical things. I'm glad to see you doing well with your hip surgery. Seeing your story helps me greatly. I'm counting down for my own hip surgery, just over a month from now. I plan to ask more questions regarding being born premature and health conditions. :)

    My mother was in labour for over 2 days, and I was a preme baby too. I’ve got hEDS with TERRIBLE chronic pain and really unstable joints, plus POTS, extremely sensitive skin (kinda like MCAS, but only with my skin), and gastroparesis seems to be getting really serious (just started heavy symptoms in April so we’re still not sure how bad everything is)

      Brie Morgan since your not sure if you have MCAS make sure you are very cautious with tests that require contrast. I didn't know I had MCAS and they did a cat scan with iodine contrast and it made it to where I can only eat 2 foods now if I take Benedryl with each meal. I also have every MCAS symptom also now. Hope this info helps you. If they had just pre-medicated me I wouldn't be this sick.

    I am an identical twin, so they are normally born premature. My mom was sick, so they had to do an emergency c section and I was born 2 months and a week early. Because it was a c section, I guess technically she was not in "labor" so to speak, but the doctors told my mom that if we were born ten years before the year I was born (2006) they would not have had the technology to save all three of us. My mom didn't even get to see us until the day after we were born because we had stopped breathing when we were born. Every time I think about that it makes me think of how crazy that is and how lucky we are.

    I was full term and my mom had only 5 min of labor. 2 pushes and I was delivered in the passenger seat of my dad's new pickup truck. Same with my daughter... I had about 15 minutes between first pain and her delivery into my dad's hands again.I didn't even have to push and she was full term as well. My mom was 17 and I was15 years old. None of my brothers went full term and none have eds (there are 4 of them!) Neither does my only sister who also was a preemie. I've always been a sickly person. I typically would miss 2/3 of every school year due to illnesses and hospitalization. I was able to still keep my grades up due to homework being sent with neighbouring children and turned in whenever I got back to school. I also would be tested on my second or third day back, depending on the teacher.

    Technically I was premature in definition terms because I was born at like 35 weeks but I was a massive baby (like 9 lbs) and was ready to come out so medically I was fine lol. But I just find it so fascinating how different everybody is!! Like a baby born at 35 weeks is 9lbs and then there are babies born late who are still tiny. Health and the human body is crazy!

    I was 2 weeks overdue and i have g-HSD that is what i'd guess is average severity for hsd/eds:ers. But yes eds affects your birth. One of the two parts of the placenta is actually genetically and biologically a part of the fetus (and the other a part of the bearer). So if the baby got eds then yes the placenta will be structurally weaker. And this goes doubly if the childbearer got it too (mine does not).

    As for labor. I had four kids. I would say the longest was my third. I had to take weekly shots to stop the contractions. And my last one was born 34 weeks. I know some dont consider it early but he was so tiny and fragile. He stayed 2 weeks in hospital. He has had couple surgeries and has hearing issues.

    Premature babies can present with more health issues. All your tissues and organs develop in your mom’s womb. If you are born earlier, obv the bits and bobs do not have the time to develop. However, if your condition is genetic, even being born full-term does not mean anything about your symptoms :)

      @Chloe cuellar I fell the need to point out that your are assuming the disability is purely the result of "physical" issues, but things such as narcolepsy, fatigue, insomnia, depression, and uncontrolled pain can make a person unable to reliably work any job, even online. How do you show up to work if you can't stay awake for a few days, or can't think straight because your in too much pain or lacking too much sleep. All the issues I mentioned can be related to or caused by her conditions. People too often assume that disabilities end at purely physical problems, but they rarely do.

      kohlfrog I wasn’t assuming because of her or his disability I was saying that just in case she wanted to look for a job but I know she can’t because of her or his disability I also have a disability if you’re wondering

    • @kohlfrog
      @kohlfrog Před 5 lety +1

      @Chloe Cuellar I understand. It's just something I personally feel obligated to point out. I've been disabled for years and am still fighting for disability(USA) because while I have various physical issues (too numerous to name arm) the majority of what actually keeps me from work less demanding jobs are less "physical" problems, such as inability to regulate my circadian rhythm, fatigue, and random bouts of illness. Having been on the receiving end of "there are jobs at ___ doing ___ that I bet you could do." More times than I could count, from people who honestly think they are helping, but are really just unknowingly rubbing salt in an already very sore wound. I know most of us that can't work wish we could. I miss it. I still get the news paper and always check the jobs to see if some job I could miraculously do appears, even though I know such a job doesn't exist as jobs require reliability, which I don't have. I've even gotten the "I have a friend with what you have that does so and so, I bet you could do that." ...from my social worker. So I'm a little sensitive about it. But more feel the need to make people aware that it's not just "physical"(although fatigue and such are physical, but you know what I mean) things that cause disability.

    • @BannerThePonyboxer
      @BannerThePonyboxer Před 5 lety

      @@kohlfrog I totally missed the earlier comment but you hit the nail on the head. I don't just have EDS/POTS/Gastroparesis, and my illnesses are currently pretty out of control. I can't be reliable as I have to spend a lot of my time laying down as my POTS seems to be progressing which could be to do with the malnutrition. I also have something neurological going on which affects my spine, legs, hands and arms so I can't even sit at a desk, and if I have to get up and down to do thing it irritates the nerves in my legs so I can't use them. Then the issue with my hands, I get spasms so again can't sit at a computer using my hands all day and anything more physical is ruled out for obvious reasons.
      I'd absolutely love a job because it's mind numbing spending 23/24hrs a day laying down but at the moment nobody would hire me because I'm literally useless lol.

    my mom first went into labor at five months but they managed to stop it. I was emergency C-sectioned at seven months. my twin didn't make it, but my EDS is pretty severe. my parents don't have it and neither do any of my siblings (we think the mutation originated with me).

    I don’t have EDS, but I was technically premature. I was about a month early, but was mostly fine anyways. My mom was in labor for 22 hours I believe is what she said

    Shortly put, as the baby develops in the womb or even in eggs for other animals, there are genes that are expressed on certain cues to develop the baby correctly so everything happens on time. For example, you know our fingers are webbed while we're very young fetuses, but then the tissue between the fingers die off to give you the finger structure. If that event were to happen too soon, your fingers probably will not form well. The opposite or the process not happening often enough, you get webbed digits like your toes.
    Even shorter, your genes remain practically the same throughout your whole life starting from when you were just one cell. What changes is how your genes are read in certain ages at certain tissues. If you have a genetic disorder, it will occur when that specific gene/s are processed, if ever. However, it might be an interesting study if someone was to make a statistic of %EDS patients born premature, since some conditions do lead to premature births after all.
    Speaking of which, my mom never went into labor for me. She was scheduled for a c-section due to advanced age and pretty big myomas that grew together with me, so her doctor didn't want to risk extra bleeding. They apparently tried to induce her before the operation but I was feeling lazy I guess :)

    I was full term but I had something called failure to thrive which basically meant I wasn't doing well in the womb.
    So they induced mum and she was in labor for three days. apparently she was so bored she just wanted to leave but she couldn't.
    I was born this Saturday 23 years ago. I have one kidney and I'm 4ft 2 at 23 years old.
    Basically medical science isn't good enough to find what's wrong so I'm a bit of a mystery.
    Apart from guys at the train station calling me a midget and random people stopping me at the shops to tell me I'm short I don't notice that much.

    So I was 13 weeks premature and I have cerebral palsy! I had a brain bleed upon delivery which caused the CP along with hydrocephalus and strabismus. But my mom didn’t know she was in labor she thought she had the flu by the time she finally went to the ER she was 10 cm dilated so they ran her to an OR and put her under and out I came!

    I don't *think* I was born premature, but I'm not 100% sure. My EDS is fairly serious but manageable. My youngest sister wasn't premature, but my mom had a very hard pregnancy and she was born very very tiny, and out of all my sisters her EDS is the most severe.
