For the cost, the meals were pretty poor quality! Add to that how dirty you say the cabin was, it sounds definitely not worth it. I did this journey in the 80's with a hefty staff discount (I think we only paid for the sleeper upgrade), and honestly the cabins look the same just 40 years older. I would expect better in 2024, including electric charging points, not just the shaver port. Thanks for the review.

@@debthomas2078 Honestly, I really liked the meals, no complaint for me there 🤷‍♂️ As for the cabin, I think I just got unlucky, as the other times I have used this service the cabins were fine (besides the occasional coffee stain and mites in the blankets, which i happen to be allergic to [had a fairly bad reaction after this trip]). You're not wrong about the cabins looking the same, economy and first class have undergone a couple of refurbs here and there with a major one couple months back, but sleepers have mostly remained untouched besides several deep cleans during the pandemic. It's ironic how the sleeper cabins were at their best DURING the pandemic rather than unsafer. As for modern amenities like charging points, that's what we get for our not so great governments and the lack of money they're putting into these.

The XPT was a great train in 1982. It was a good train in 2002. In 2012, it was OK for trips such as Sydney to Maitland. Now, it's just sad. Track hasn't been updated enough. The train itself is lovingly maintained to a standard, but all those creaks and squeaks and groans are train-speak for "please, kill me". And the replacement CAF trains will be shite as the engines are under the carriage. So much noisier. Well done NSW. Slow clap.

@@realjohnboxall Honestly, I do love how Queensland has made their regional network better. They have a modern diesel powercar system for long journeys and electric for closer journeys. It's still around as slow as the XPT, but it's more modern, sleek and comfortable. The XPT was a great train, but everything good must come to an end... And the NSW government isn't making that end a pretty experience

@@Ar-Rahman61 I've seen many ideas and proposals get thrown around, but if they're not going to upgrade the actual lines for both brisbane and melbourne to sydney routes and get in some good high speed trains (highly unlikely considering the government we have) our best bet is to maybe restore or rebuild the southern aurora to modern standards and attach it to a fancy new loco.

I admittedly do have a bias toward these trains as they are and always have been a personal favourite of mine, but I can agree the sleeper class is very underwhelming and not really worth your money. I don't have a problem with economy and first class as they aren't that bad, and my only complaint would be the journey time.. I do believe the sleeper class could use an upgrade
