Old lateral files make great heavy duty storage. The drawers are wide and can hold lots of weight. Think boxes of paper. Best of all they can be free. Offices are getting rid of them as they move paper online. Set up a search in the free section of craigslist and have it email you when one shows up.
All great pieces of advice for the home studio or any studio. Another few options on the lighting front would be a Godox SL60 or SL200 or GVM 80W COB. Being cheaper, the build and fan noise aren't as good as a 120D or Amaran, but I've used both a lot, and they provide great light for a very approachable price if people are just getting started. Both have Bowens mounts and umbrella holders, so you can slap a source of diffusion on them as well. Great as always. I love the work you put out Becki, and I always get excited when I see a new episode of the podcast pop on my podcast app. Thanks for doing your thing!
Great video! We’re going to be moving out of our small rental office/studio in the Spring when we move into our new condo (work from home). We have many of the things you recommended, but I love the look and idea of the charging wall (that’s something we need to work on for sure) and those fancy bins with dividers looked really cool as well! A rolling desk is a great idea as the room we plan on using as our video room, will also be used for our other hobbies and working out, so having the flexibility to move the table around would be perfect. Thanks for the video, and loved your look here, Becki!
I made my own charge wall after seeing your video and it's by far my most useful studio addition. Drone batteries, controllers, camera batteries, camera accessories, you name it; it can be mounted. Thanks for these super consistent tips!
Gaffer squad! You can do literally everything with it. We already taped all white light switches on our black wall backdrop! At least until we change them to matte black!
Great video . The storage bins are a must . I have smaller ones that stack on top of each other for all the real small fiddly bits . After every shoot , you gotta tidy up and put everything back where it belongs too . Staying organised goes a long way . Killer post Beck ! ✌🏼✌🏼
Good tips. I think I just decided to raise my desk a few inches and put it on locking wheels. Only partially inspired here but thanks for the inspiration just the same.
All very good suggestions. Thanks! If I can add to the discussion, in the past I have had equipment damaged (microphones, camera) due to improper stands/cable management. I know many have the mindset of quick set-ups, but always ensure the space and equipment are properly secured and organized. Keeping a clean set-up at home or on the go is essential. Make sure you have the right tools for the job will make everything go so much smoother.
I've been running three small softboxes on cheap stands with 12 bulbs that you have to screw in each time. I got them because it was the cheapest way to experiment with lighting for CZcams and I could still use them for remote product photography, and even on-site (despite their weak output and cumbersome nature). As my channel has grown, and as I've just transitioned video/photography back to a "nights and weekends" endeavor after trying freelance for a year, I just got a 120dii and a heavy duty c stand. Idk what the hell I was thinking waiting so long, and prioritizing other gear over this. The output is SO much better. The quality is better. It's not gonna fall over. It's heavy but still really portable. Setup is sooo much faster. Having a remote is epic. A sturdy top-down is possible now. I honestly feel dumb because I've heard so often that good lighting is important yet I waited a really long time.
Super helpful video! My favorite tip was having a desk on casters, which makes for such easy movement and transition. Also could be done with a single person and no scuffing of the floor required. Win-win!
Love the manfrotto arm idea for a top down setup. I've been experimenting with different ways of mounting my ZV-1 and it's light enough that this would definitely work.
Thanks for another awesome video guys. Currently cutting the final edit to my home office/studio renovation video which includes inspiration from many of yours including a backlit version of the charging wall and the Mahogany No. 3 candle. Thanks for all the help and guidance as its really helping both with the video ideas as well as the process involved in post!
Ive really just learned the importance of light and cant say enough how important it is. Great vid keep it up always a joy to wake up grab a coffee and watch
Since my home office for recording talking head videos is small, I don't have enough space for another light and I can't record videos with afternoon sunlight. I ordered a large 5-in-1 reflector and a reflector clamp after watching this video. I can reflect light on one side, block the afternoon sunlight on the other side, and move the stand when not in use.
Love the video. Thanks for the tips. Just a suggession for the links in your blog, make them open in a new tab so it doesn't take us away from your site each time. Love the bins.
Oh, man would I love to have the space for a dedicated studio! My office is in the attic space where the roof peak leaves only standing room in the middle of the space. I have not figured out how to film in there yet. I often set up in my living room (which is actually a really cool space with lots of options) but I have to haul it all down 2 floors and then take it all back up when I'm done. Sometimes I haul it all to my auto workshop and film there. And, of course, out on the trail too. It's a fun challenge but a lot of hauling around. I'll get that permanent studio someday. And when I do, I'll do a lot of these things! Thanks for the insights and keep it up.
I use the Neewer 660 bicolor with umbrellas for my studio. Works really well and only $200 into my setup. I used a LINCO adjustable overhead light boom arm attached to one of the light stands for overhead. Works really well and inexpensive.
Sido crates are awesome and the guy who owns the company that makes them is really nice. We use them in our warehouse at work alongside milk crates for inventory. Pretty cool to see them get a shoutout here.
Hello, thanks for sharing your knowledge, I am new to the channel I found you today, very good material I congratulate you, my main language is Spanish, if there is any mistake in what I write, I apologize, well here we are learning, greetings from New Jersey but I'm from Puerto Rico ...
This couldn’t be more timely, I just shot my first talking head yesterday! I really love your channel, it’s always so aesthetic. Thanks as always for the inspiration 👌🏽
@@BeckiandChris I don’t know about well but you gotta start somewhere lol. It really helps when people I watch are generous with tips and tricks. Keep it up and Happy New Year!
The reflector idea is fantastic, I have one sitting in the basement. Finally bought a real light, Amaran 60x. I need to look back on some of your older videos on lighting because I think my height or angle or something is off 🤣. Thx for another great video Becki.
Becki and Chris, love all you videos, including this one. Bongo tie? Never heard of them before! I had to look them up to see what they were! Great accessory for the home studio!
Thank you for such an on time video. I defiantly feel that this could have been double the time. Love to see it. The importance of a table with wheels and even a utility cart is truly invaluable.😂
Was looking for vids on buying a used helicopter. Maybe fly from SF to home around Malone NY... I was thinking bout that. ❤Then thought about you guys❤. Ttyl Happy NY n love you guys!
I love all of your videos, but I would love to see more decorating and design. You have one of my favorite styles on CZcams. I would love to see more videos on that. Thanks for all you do. (and here's some randomness -- love the "feelings" pin. Where did you get that?)
thanks for the suggestions. still need a light and mic for the main kit but also hope to get more of the other tools so I can practice and improve the quality of product shoots. also: it's 2022, time to take a shot for every time gorillapod is said by mistake ;)
I love your videos! But there are so many brands besides Aputure! Let it be Jinbei or Godox where you can get a 60W light and a deep softbox for approx. 200$. Content Creation may be cheap. You don't need aputure to begin with.
I've been using your slog 2 lut for the like over a year. Just upgraded to the A7vi so with 10 bit colour, I can finally take advantage of slog 3. Might have to take a look at your lut once I've had some time to play around with the camera more!
Dumb question - I’d like to get a light for shooting photos in a gym setting. Due to the layout I think it’s best to have something that doesn’t need to be plugged into a wall because long extension cords will turn into a tripping hazard. Do you have any suggestions for what kind of light to get? I’ve only shot using natural lighting so far.
Good lighting is #1 for sure. Doesn't even matter what kind of lights you have. CRI 80 or 99. Doesn't even matter what kind of camera you have. Old super 8 film, or 8K RAW. Focus on lighting!
We’re back after a refreshing little break for the holidays! What would you like to see from us in 2022?
More dark and moody photography and setups! 🖤
Anything you’re excited about making! 🤘🏴🖤
I think you nailed it with this video, I’d love to see more behind the scenes!
@@TimConnor13 appreciate you! 🙏🏼
@@AlejandrosEngineeredLifestyle thanks! This one was fun to make!
Good tips. Especially that heavy duty clamp. I've been using lighter weight versions of that, but that setup looks like it can handle almost anything.
Thanks man! The clamps are the backbone of the studio I feel like 😂
A hand vac with dogs is a 100% requirement. Great list of gear that’s often overlooked!
very good for snack crumbs too. speaking from experience.
Just what I need will use some of these tips to try and make the small space in my garage better 😉
Those bins are clutch with dividers, thanks for the helpful tips!!!
Sidio crates!
