Great timing for this video. I just picked up my first Bass. I have been dabbling in music ever since grade school. I never really got good at any instruments but I play for fun. I just turned 51 and decided to learn the bass and it was great to hear Tony's stories. So give me about 10 years and I'll give Tony a run for his money. Thanks for another great video.

+Produce Like A Pro I'll never forget seeing the MTV concert of The Firm back in the middle 80's. The concert was interspaced with interviews, and there was Jimmy Page talking about how he found Tony Franklin. With his London accent added to his slightly high pitched whisper of a voice (paraphrased here) ".......and I had never heard of him before. Really amazing, that." And Franklin's stunning, sonic ripping and zipping fretless bass lines accenting the groove. Coincidentally, I have been saving up to buy a fretless bass to add to my home studio collection. This video has been inspirational.

    Warren,
I love how you make videos of tracking sessions with musicians and interview them. It lets us learn about the instrument and get a little view of you in action as a producer, which really helps me with the transition from just recording my own stuff to knowing how to treat other musicians while recording them. And Tony's thoughts gave me so much insight into how I should play and produce bass. Wonderful video. Thank you so much.

I know Glenn Fricker will see this, wonder if he's going to comment on this. This is Professional with a capital P. Has prepared, can play the song from beginning to end with one take, doesn't waste time in the studio for tracking... just a great role model for anyone wanting to call themselves a professional.
And i'm sure he's not playing year old strings either... might have even just restrung both. But that's not a big deal, since it's all part of the price when you get a professional to do the business.
    Thanks for this :)

Produce Like A Pro : I just have to say thank you again Warren for this video. Why this video has helped me so much is the matter of fact basics of what Tony communicates; being prepared for the gig, having something ready to contribute; be social, but be truly about getting to work and delivering what your there to deliver; invest in yourself with musical knowledge, Tony reads and knows music from a young age giving him the ability to understand what and where he can contribute; be about your craft, no BS (my two cents); as a bass player deliver what the tune/song needs or is asked of you by who you are working for; be a team player, doing what is asked of you, not what your ego dictates; have the ability to translate what the producer suggests/asks for into musical performance. I know I ran on a bit here, but I cannot say enough good things about this video and the focus it helped me grab hold of prepping for a gig that is important to me. Thank you!!!

Fantastic Keyboard player. Also My cousin Duncan Caulfield, who gave me my first bass, a Fenton Wheil, played in a band called Clinton Cardine who played a gig on the same bill as Pino Paladino (what a player) in the 70's and I'm sure he refered to him as the mad Italian.

Very cool 1 take tony great player , I did the same pickup add on as well on a couple of p basses I didn’t know anybody who didn’t do that . Keep the hammer and a flat blade screwdriver away from the bass player. Tony is great very cool .

As ever, great content Warren..... but also some memory jogging for me.... I bought my first 'decent' electric guitar from a music shop in Hereford if 1979..... I'd forgotten the name of the shop....Buzz Music..... a natural finish Fender strat.... still own it (along with a few others now) and still play it..... Thanks Tony for bumping that memory to the surface.....

+Produce Like A Pro Thanks for the prompt response mate! I am learning a lot from your videos about a variety of things.. appreciate the work you are putting into the consistent quality of the vids. I know that I have many ways to go as far as mixing, but here's a track if you'd like to hear.. It's a cover of Caravan's No Backstage Pass.. I recorded everything myself, except for the drums which are done with Logic's drummer program. Cheers! takebackspace.bandcamp.com/track/no-backstage-pass-cover

Hi +Cee Dee Fantastic stuff! That sounds like me! Haha I end up playing most the instruments on many of the Productions I do! I LOVE Caravan! • @TakeBackSpace
      @TakeBackSpace Před 8 lety

+Produce Like A Pro Warren it means a lot that you checked out the tracks :) and thank you for your feedback! Wow, Hatfield and North is a phenomenal recommendation. Hadn't really listened to them, so thank you! I really got into the band Camel as well. There's such a lovely sound from those records.. great virtuosity, but never pretentious. Andrew Latimer's licks are just stuff of legend. Did a rough Rhyader Goes to Town cover with that wild intro.. lol. takebackspace.bandcamp.com/track/rhyader-goes-to-town
Also, maybe you've heard it, but the Scorpions debut album called Lonesome Crow is simply fantastic.. think you'd enjoy it.
Take care mate, hope you have a great week!

Great interview Warren, Tony is one of the Greats!!! Very Distinctive tone and playing!!!
I have to agree with him that with Fenders and Gibsons you have to put that extra effort to get the tone out of the instrument, i own 3 Gibson Basses (2 Thunderbirds + 1 RD Standard) and a Fretless P Bass, and that's what i really love about them, and i can say that if an instrument is good enough the harder you push it, the more it gives back in tone and expression, whereas active ones are limited... but that's my opinion....
thanks again for another great one!!!

Hi +Tassos Ioannidis I love Fender and Gibson Basses, I own a Jazz Bass and use it on a lot of my Productions!
