  • It is great looking at this stuff after 5 years of it sitting "in the can," so to speak. I did a VERY fast and rough 24 track mix. I left in a nice bit of banter at the head.

I was driving up north for a gig with some old friends, so my (ex) wife and I were listening to a bunch of tunes from the same genre in the car. For some reason Showman's Life came around a few times on the box. I didn't realize it but she had memorized the harmonies. We arrived, settled in for beers and shots, and before long the lead singer in the band was talking with her about singing...and out came an acapella version that I swear the angels would be proud of. We don't communicate anymore, but I can testify it was the most beautiful four minutes of music I've ever heard.

In the chorus they should have backed him up more...not vocally...more attack and agression.

Patience is sometimes rewarded. I liked the banter, FWIW.

+Jay Curlee someday he will listen all the way through, and thoroughly regret leaving the first time before hearing the song. Love Buddy Miller, and this song. Wish he was on the boat again.

What an amazing song... love it... Thank you for posting Buddy Miller's version. I saw Chris Gage perform this song at "Strange Brew" in Austin, Texas back in June of 2014. He sang it as a tribute to the passing of Jesse Winchester. Jesse had passed away in April. I had never heard the song before. I was blown away by the power and emotion. Sent chills up and down my spine.

Mr Miller was trying to politely tell the keyboard player to quiet down, in a subtle way.. while telling his story.

This is so good--Buddy really sings this like he's lived it. Looks like Phil Madeira on keyboard. This is a Jesse Winchester song, right?
