  • Claire shows you another way to create lettering that is painted on fabric and then free machine embroidered with metallic thread.
    If you have a soldering iron then it can be used as a stencil cutter and you can then create lovely lettering on fabric.
    If you're not sure how to use metallic thread then Claire will give you some tips and you will love using it in your work.

    Looks fabulous! And definitely something I want to try. I think it's great that you make "mistakes" - it just goes to show the rest of us that we don't have to be perfect to achieve a lovely piece of embroidery. BTW - love your rose gold snips! Where can I get some??

    • @clairemuirfreemachineembro7863
      @clairemuirfreemachineembro7863  Před 3 lety

      Thank you Sestra. Yes, I could have reshot that piece of the video but I think it does help to know how to rectify mistakes. Lots of things have gone wrong for me over the years and I've learnt how to deal with them. I think it gives you confidence to try new things, knowing that it's not the end of the world if it doesn't go according to plan. My snips are fab! I'm afraid they are not rose gold but just gold. They are part of a 5 piece set that includes 3 pairs of scissors, a pair of snips and a rotary cutter. They are really good and they are made by Bernina. I can email you some more details if you like: info@clairemuir.co.uk

    I have a question. Not sure if you remember chatting with me. I was making curtains. finally finished. I've been playing around with my new Brother quilting and sewing machine doing the free motion embroidery. I am using the clear plastic free motion foot that came with the machine. It seems to be really tight, and it hops. Hard to explain, sorta jerky. My old machine was a Brother Runway Project machine, it seemed really loose and the thread would jam a lot. It was a very old machine. I didn't want to mess with the tension unless I have too and its set on 4 on my new machine, it seems to do well on anything, except the free motion. I don't know if its the tension or me just learning how to do the free motion or just getting used to my new machine. My old machine didn't hop around like the new one does. I also have a metal close toe free motion foot, I have not tried it on my new machine. Just wondering if its maybe me, the foot, or the tension. I know there are a couple more foot's I can try, that I don't have. Thank you!

    • @clairemuirfreemachineembro7863
      @clairemuirfreemachineembro7863  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Shannon, lots of questions, I will try to help. The clear foot that came with your machine that seems tight. You don't say what you are sewing on. Free machine embroidery feet do hop sometimes depending on which one you use which can be off putting. Try not to focus on it. Try moving your work quite slowly and sew quite fast with your foot, that should result in smoother stitches. It is a different way of stitching and can take a bit of time to get used to it. With your Brother Runaway machine, you don't say what thread it was. If it was an old cotton, they aren't up to machine embroidering and can snag. Try a polyester thread top and bottom or a machine embroidery rayon thread. Try those things before you alter the tension. Hope that helps.

    Had my first attempt at this. Am finding that the choice of font/typeface is crucial for letters like P or R where you lose the middle when cutting out your stencil!

    A really useful video. I loved the end result. Thank you. Did the lettering font you used have a name? I have searched online but am unable to find it. It looks like a simplified Old English. I ended up using a different font, but I would like to use the one that you demonstrated.

    I have tried on numerous occasions to do this on my Brother F420 with the correct foot and a hoop. I do lower the presser foot but the foot seems to sit above the fabric and not close to it like the foot in this vid. And I get birds’ nest after birds’ nest. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. Do you have any advice please?

    • @clairemuirfreemachineembro7863
      @clairemuirfreemachineembro7863  Před rokem

      Hi April, I have had Brother F420's in my classroom and they are a great machine to free machine embroider on. The FM feet do vary on different machines and they don't grasp the fabric like normal feet but do sit above the fabric. Are you putting your fabric in a hoop? Birds nesting usually happens if the presser foot isn't lowered but you have already said you do that and besides, your machine beeps at you to remind you to lower it. It also happens when the bobbin hasn't been put in properly so I would just check that. I do use a F420 in other videos on here if that would help.

      @@clairemuirfreemachineembro7863 I noticed my needle was set in the “middle” position instead of the default “to the left”. And I wondered if that could be the issue. Does it matter which position the needle is in. Apart from this issue, I am loving the Brother.

      @@Romcom356 no, that shouldn't affect it at all. It's just easier to see if the needle is in the middle. Glad you love the machine. The bird's nest will be user error I'm afraid and It will be a simple fix 🙂Don't give up
