Shelby begins production for the 1967 Shelby. Because of Ford's redesign of their Mustang, they're able to offer a big-block engine as an option, opening the way for Shelby to introduce a stablemate to the GT350; the GT500. Step in to the 'Lounge and let's talk about the 1967 Shelby!

Fascinating details on the 67, loved it. I admit I could have lived without the background music - sometimes it made it hard to understand the narration.
I agree. I loved the content of the video and appreciate the amount of effort that must’ve went into research, writing a script, and putting together the vide. But it was hard to hear at times with the background music. Maybe if he wants to keep, lower the volume more relative to the narration.
Sorta agree - the music was annoying for me because it was so repetitive! The different music at the end was MUCH nicer.
@@burlingtonbill1 For me it's more about hearing itself - my old ears don't handle music and narration at the same time very well. I need to concentrate on understanding what's being said really hard and the music is just so damn distracting (sorry).

IMHO, the '67 Mustang was always the best-looking Mustang ever made; Shelby took it to the next level. I've always wanted a fastback model with a 427 in red, or any other color than lime green. Never realized there were so many "growing pains" in getting this model to market. Carroll was probably glad to have the "Mustang project" off his plate in '68.

I knew that Ford made the 1969 and 1970 Shelby’s themselves but I learned a lot more from this video.

Hi Gearhead Lounge, nice series of vehicle/engine histories (Shelbys, Mopar Hemis...), thank you for presenting younger generations with part(s) of our automotive history that stands out as the "Muscle Car and/or Pony Car Era". These were exciting times for all manufacturers involved and especially for young customers... Your presentations are first class and I look forward to the histories of the '69 Shelbys and their Boss counterparts. Sadly enough for financial/cost, political (Ford), and liability reasons, the next Shelbys would be "more Ford and less Shelby" modifications. Pollution (CA), liability, and insurance clouds were building up over the American car industry horizons and the motoring Happy Days were "counted". Wow! One of the best automotive history videos I have ever seen! Very comprehensive while maintaining the chronology of the development and production the 67's. What I liked most was your pacing, not too fast, but not too slow and boring. The parts I wanted to hear again I backed up a few seconds to repeat them. I can't imagine how many hours it took to cut all of that old footage together and time it with audio. Very well done! This is the first video of yours I have seen and you earned a Like and Subscribe from me! -And I'm not even a Ford guy, but don't tell anyone because I love them all! 😉

THANK YOU FOR THE REAL INFO. Many years ago I built a 67 Shelby clone , black on black w/ brushed aluminum,Jerry Titus Flairs,Shelby mini lite style wheels,FE 390,O.E. Tri power, RUG Top loader, moded syncros , It was actually a Steve McQueen style car w/ only 67k miles,setting in a garage not being driven, so I bought it for only $100.00 and made the Shelby clone. Keep it 15 years before selling it.

I enjoyed this doc and all the associated nostalgia, but would have appreciated a lower volume for the background music - too carnival-like. I owned a base model '67 fastback, but turned it into my own version of a Shelby, w/ a 351C, top-loader 4-speed and a posi diff sporting 3:90 gears, as well as the front disc brake assemblies, from a Torino. It made some great low-end torque and would scream like a banshee when I put my foot in it. Top RPM was a stout 8K+ - scared the hell out of me when I missed a shift.

Due to a shortage of 428 engines, several 1967 GT500's got 390 engines, but were sold as having 428 engines. My uncle bought one new and only found out years later it has a 390 engine in it.

That's complete BUNK. Never happened. If he found a 390 in his 428 car, then some unscrupulous garage stole his engine.
That's 100% not true. You are confusing the 427/428 shortage in the Cobra's, the 67 GT500's all had 428s. Not one 390 car has evere been found or documented.
@@nevetslegasi5686 Some sources claim there was a 428 shortage and 390 substitution in the 1968 models, but his was a new 1967 model.
@@jimjungle1397 Incorrect, there is ZERO verified documentation of ANY shelby recieving a 390 instead of a 428, you are sputing an urban myth. My brother and I RESTORE shelbys for a living. There was NO SHORTAGE of 428's. Heck they used them in irrigation machines, cars, industrial generators, and more.

Need Your knowledge on the 67 GT500. My Dad owned a 1967 GT500 C6 Automatic. Back when my Dad owned his from 1968 to 1977 had 2 Mechanic's. One worked at Drew Ford in La Mesa Ca. The Other had the expertise to tune Duel Quad's. This 67 GT500 with Quads was fast and powerful when tuned properly. The Mechanic at Drew Ford had worked for Shelby American from 1965 t0 1967 and helped put the 1967 GT500 together. At first I was not thrilled that the GT500 had a Automatic in it. But found it was fast shifting and strong shifts. That's when the Mechanic(Drew Ford) told Me it was "Special" .... In the the 1960's he said you could special order Drag Cars from Ford. One was the 67 Fairline with a 427 and close a Hurst 4 speed or C6 Auto that was sent out to be beefed up to handle the power of the 427. That's the C6 Shelby used in the 67 GT500 and I loved it. He didn't know how 67 GT500 had the Special C6 auto but said it was only a handful out of just over 2000 built. Here a year ago I found some info that said it was close to 68 plus or minus put into the 1967 GT500's. So My Question to You is " Do You have any Info the the C6 used in the 1967 GT500 and how many of of those C6's were put into the 67 GT500.
And one more interesting story ...... Changing Spark Plugs in a 1967 GT500 - A Very Big Problem ....... In 1969 I had returned home from Army - Crew Chief Mechanic on Helicopter's and had small hands. Heard stories of breaking sparks , taking all day and next day. Even loosen engine mounts to jackup the engine to make it easier. I think I might hold the "Unofficial" record for changing plugs in a 1967 GT500 - 4.5 hours. This was the second time and had all that I learned from the first time and a few special homemade items I made to help me. My Dad and the Specialist Tuner Mechanic couldn't believe when I called at 11:30 am( I started at 7am) to come tune the Dual Quad's.
Also thanks for info on how the 428 Police Engine was modified to make it a little better. Forget the 4 speed - that C6 was the best ...... from a stop in d for auto ....... Put the brake on put the pedal down and go ..... burn 10/15 ft rubber ..... auto shift into 2nd at about 42/43mph and burn a few ft of more rubber ... then 3rd at around 85 and chirp the tires ...... then just keeps pulling very strong flying up to past 130 just passing 5000 rpm backing off. I feel in love with car and auto. The 1967 GT500 with that C6 was a One Of A Kind.

I definitely believe that Ford did something like that, but I doubt that they kept track of it...however, they might have! @@TheGearheadLounge Have You ever seen or looked at a 1967 GT500 with the C6 Auto in one? My Dad sold his to a guy in LA in 1977. Also Since I started looking about 20 years ago at car shows and Auction's I've only seen One with the C6. Also it is worth mentioning that back in that period 60's/70's I heard that some Owner's of the GT500 with the C6 with change it out for the 4 Speed - so now just how many are left with the original C6? I think it could be a rare GT500 worth a lot more than one with a 4 speed.

So interesting, so specific, so thorough, so compelling, so comprehensive; it’s like a mini-thesis. I award you a PhD in automotive research and presentation.
I get the “cool lounge” aspect which apparently requires the requisite lounge music; however, this is another case of “less is more”. Either less volume or less brass and/or percussion would help. Maybe substitute a selection popular from the mid to late’60’s to further set the mood and enhance the “time travel” vibe.
Overall, three thumbs up!

Thanks! As far as the scoops are concerned, from what I've learned, the early cars had functional scoops. Ford wanted to cut costs and began installing the scoops without ducting. Thanks! You know, Shelby didn't compete officially with the Shelby in '67. Since they didn't make an R Model, Shelby devoted his time to Ford racing the Mustang with his Terlingua team!
The 67 cougar was what Shelby should have used. More luxurious and 3"longer in the back seat.

Another very good and detailed video on the 67 Shelby. How about doing some videos on late model Mustangs? Like Roush, Saleen and newer Boss and Shelbys. I think your best videos are when you do the history of a car.
Thanks! Yes, I agree with you about the history videos! I’m going to make as many as I can. I’ve seen that they’re by far my most popular videos. That’s a good idea about the late models. The Shelbys will probably have to wait, since I’m up to 67 and plan to progress all the way up to the new cars; but I’ll look to doing some late model Mustang stuff!

Why was Shelby such a Chicken s*** and didn't put the 427 engine in that car ....😅
Just my opinion, but I think they didn't want to have so many of the 427 out there in the public's hands would have been a disaster for warranties and reliability. The car would have been spectacular, no doubt, but only a few of the potential buyers would have been able to properly care and maintain the 427.
