  • Tiyi Medu visits gonje man, Mr. Yaya, at the National Theatre in Accra, Ghana to rehearse for a recording session.
As a Suzuki trained violinist from the age of 3, Tiyi Medu has always been drawn to the sound of traditional string instruments. She recognizes indigenous instruments such as these as the ancestors of the violin, guitar, harp and all string instruments of the modern day. This Gonje is made of python skin and horse hair, exuding a soulful and enticing sound. It was made among the Dangomba people of Northern Ghana - from which Mr. Yaya originates.
As a member of the National Theatre’s performance group, Mr. Yaya travels the world sharing African traditional songs, sound and dance. Look forward to future collaborative efforts by these two creatives!
