One doesn’t create a trend-setting genre in just one attempt. If A Fistful of Dollars had raised many an eyebrow in 1964, the confirmation still had to come. It came the year after in the form of For a Few Dollars More. Sergio Leone was 36 in 1964 when he made his breakthrough with his first western, A Fistful of Dollars. It might not have been the first European western, not even the first Italian one, but its unconventional take on the western code and its blatant display of the director’s unique talent were enough to make it a landmark in the history of cinema. There were many ingredients to this success story, including the revelation of actor Clint Eastwood and the above-average skills of the crew at all levels, but the one that stood out prominently was the soundtrack. Ennio Morricone had not only written a great score for the movie, he had also created a musical genre of its own, which would from then on become emblematic of the western sound. It developed into a cliché which even American composers would later adopt on their side of the Atlantic. Inexplicably, there has never been a proper release of the landmark soundtrack from For a Few Dollars More. It was published many times as a programme of 8 cuts, totalling a rough 17 minutes, coupled with a selection from A Fistful of Dollars of about the same length. It later received a strange CD release with additional music taken directly from the movie, including the sound effects, duplicated cues and track listing errors. There is probably no other example of an equally important score treated so poorly by the record industry. The score is made up of four different themes and is the first of many where Morricone assigned a leitmotiv or a musical colour to each of the characters, a practice that will culminate three years later in Once Upon a Time in the West. This is what we now call a classic. To cut a long story short, Ennio Morricone’s For a Few Dollars More is amongst the most important soundtracks of all times.
    Here is the complete score.
