How do you create a compelling and entertaining character without the usual screenwriting tools? Everyones favourite foot guy Quentin Tarantino has figured it out.
Brad Pitt made this movie for me. Before watching it, I never thought much of the man, but after seeing it, I walked out the theater genuinely liking Brad Pitt.
Cliff Booth is an ideal, a hero in the most classical sense. He has all the reason to be bitter, resentful and anxious (career over, accused of murdering his wife, women in the industry hate him and prevents him from getting jobs, he is being canceled, and he is dirt poor), yet he is content and in harmony with himself and his world. Because he knows what is important. He is not only a character, he has character. And, he fits into the world dynamically, using love and kindness, violence and force, when needed, with appropriate amounts. This is wisdom. .
One thing I've always respected about Brad Pitt, is that he's had leading man looks and Charisma since the 90s, and even after he played the lead in a few films, he still did supporting roles, and completely buried himself in the character. Guy has depth and a surprising lack of ego, even when he's playing Brad Pitt, Action Star.
Brad Pitt made Cliff into an movie icon, not with time, immediately. The man was always underrated because of his status, the most beautiful man etc. Bonafide movie star, old school style, with all the talent for acting possible.
Tarantino did a great job creating the character of Cliff Booth. A man totally at ease with himself, his surroundings, and his situation. You don't see that in Hollywood movies today. As the credits rolled, I wanted to see more Cliff. The Rick Dalton character, on the other hand, is an overly self-conscious, alcoholic, neurotic mess. But Tarantino wisely gave Dalton the best and funniest lines - so that keeps him interesting, in a train-wreck sort of way. By the end, we know everything about Rick Dalton. But the Cliff story feels unfinished. I'd definitely watch a sequel that has Cliff Booth in it. I think there's another movie there - waiting for Tarantino to write it.
Currently reading Tarantino’s new novel, mostly because I want to see more of Cliffs story. It’s not what I expected so far, but I definitely want to make a video discussing it. And I absolutely agree, if Tarantino wants to even throw Cliff into his last film, that would make me a happy man indeed.
I didn't like it after I saw it in theaters the first time. I saw in theaters two more times and only liked it more each time. Probably my favorite Tarantino film, too.
In real life a stunt man named Shorty Shea went to the ranch and was killed by the Manson cult. Knowing this made the scene more tense but more relieving as he drove away. In the same way it was relieving that Tate wasn't brutally murdered. This is a story in a story, an inclusio. To top it off in Cliffs flashback is another flashback, brilliant.
@@jackhigginbotham1654 Bloody Mary’s are funny, they’re like brunch, you’ll see em served with bacon, olives, even shrimp. And not a bad drink! Cheers!
The criticism that, “Not much happens” is levied at several of Tarantino’s movies (the best ones, coincidentally enough!) “Once....” proves that if you’ve got interesting characters and engaging dialogue sprinkled with cool atmosphere, you don’t need much else! 🤷🏻♂️ It was a fantastic character study wrapped in a nostalgic walk down pop culture memory lane where everyone’s favorite two decades clashed in a passing of the baton that was at once heartfelt and raw. Rick and Cliff have chemistry. Chemisry like that can make an entire movie. Placed inside a vehicle like "Once upon a time..", that chemistry is kinda like the rug in the Big Lebowski's apartment. It ties the whole thing together.
That's really how a Bloody Mary is. He just made it a spicy one. There is a premix (Spicy)at most grocery stores. It's my favorite drink with a steak. Comes with a celery stick even though I prefer the celery seasoning.

P.S - My Bloody Mary - On 30% Glass oF ICE - Tomato Juice, Vodka, Lemon juice - Quarter LEMON , salt + pepper and Tobasco sauce to taste. My Wife adds a celery stick - its nice, but I'm sure Brad would rather just drink the Bloody Mary! CHEERS.
When I first watched this movie, I entered it for Leo, now i rewatch it to see Brad Pitt. He played Cliff so well and is one of my favorite charaters in this movie. He made this movie for me
For me, Rick Dalton is equally important since he is so opposite of Cliff. One character has a lot more going for him than he realizes including a decent chance of continuing a successful career, yet he's terrified that he's washed up and unpraiseworthy. The other character is truly washed up and has possibly even been crippled, yet carries himself like a prince.
Great analysis! I'd recommend QT's book, "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: A Novel," for more background information on Cliff and Rick. Plus it's a fun way to revisit a film we all love!
Great breakdown. And what a phenomenal movie. Cliff, to me, is a man that knows what the world is, accepts his lot with a smile. He doesn't say too much and never shows his hand. He refuses to pick a lane in life and rides the wind. I loved his character and wanted to see him win. It didn't seem like Rick appreciated him as much as he should.
I imagine that cliff saw action in the pacific theater with his skills for h2h straight up greatest generation theme Booth and Brandi made the flick Timothy Olyphant was just a bonus playing the gunslinger
I absolutely loved this movie and he was my favourite character no question. I place this move in my all time top 5. I had zero expectations going into it and having read a lot about the Manson murders I was super surprised at how it turned out that final fight was so satisfying. I would love to know how it turned out for them in this reality.

I'd watch a movie, if the entire thing was just Cliff driving around all day running errands. Just 2 hours of that. And it would still be worth watching
Great job. Appreciate your insights. There’s some things you said that I will definitely remember and require unpacking. However, I’ve been a life-long bartender (well, 27 years, and I’m not dead yet) and I have to tell you that celery in a Bloody Mary is pretty common. Most old-school bartenders would say it’s “suppose”’to be in a Bloody Mary, the same way a lime is so steeped in the tradition of the cocktail as to be entirely necessary, i. e. a cherry in a Manhattan and a lime wedge with a margarita. On a less traditional/solely practical note: a quarter or a third of all people who drink bloody marys want it the spice to challenge them, to be so spicy as to overcome their ability to enjoy it. The overwhelming spice is the reason they enjoy it, like the way many, many gilmet lovers insist upon using Rose’s lime syrup, and the rest find Rose’s lime syrup disgusting. The only foodie example I can think of is canned, gelatinized cranberry sauce at Thanksgiving instead of dried cranberries stewed slowly with sugar and water. Or the way a kid prefers a McDonalds hamburger to fresh beef grilled with fresh bread, fresh tomato, fresh lettuce, fresh onions, and pickles. It happens all the time, but half of people don’t get it.
Appreciate the insights from a life-long bartender! My knowledge on most alcoholic drinks is limited (a pina colada is as far as I go with most cocktails) but I’d always thought of it as tomato juice and vodka, didn’t realise about the celery nor the spices until now. Much the same as not realising sweet French toast was a thing, as I’d always had it savoury. You do learn new things every day aha
Great dissection and narrative of an excellent movie and character. A lot of your observations are what go on in the back of your thoughts as you watch the movie - you just put them perfectly into words.
Stuntman Eddie Braun on Carrolla podcast said Cliff was dead on example of a stuntman life. He actually worked for Martin Sheen. Sheen didn’t have a license so Eddie drove him where he needed to go. Did his stunts , etc.
Cliff’s character may seem like the Lone Cowboy, but actually he’s more like an Indian Brave - he’s even got the moccasins. A chivalrous knight or Ronin Samurai, but not a Cowboy.
Just watched this movie for the first time recently ... love it! Very addictive film, and one I know I'll be watching over and over for years to come. I'm from the UK and having never been to the USA, this film has given me the urge to vist the state of California; I'm so intrigued by Los Angeles and those Hollywood Hills houses. Would love to live there for a year or so. Pitt's character (Booth) is laid-back, carefree and likeable, with a little portion of creepy thrown in for good measure (though not too creepy to spoil the overall likeability of his character). Additionally, this film makes smoking look so appealing; I'm a non-smoker (tried it when younger a few times), but this film made smoking seem enjoyable, fun and cool.
This was a good critique, thanks. I really enjoyed Pitt in this film. Was never much of a fan (but for a few movies, 12 Monkeys, Fight Club, etc) but I think he aged well with his career. Yeah he aged really well ; )
You are SPOT ON, in all points of this (except one should always drink one's Bloody Mary with a celery stalk and LOTS of spice, and it's "Spahn Ranch"}. The casting here is absolutely key, and Tarantino himself says that not only were these two guys his first choice to play these parts, but also if either one couldn't or wouldn't do it, he'd have to go with two different guys, because without one of them, the other one wouldn't have worked. So, if you love Leo's work in the movie (and I do), it's partly because Brad does HIS job so well.
Cliff never flirts with the hippy chick. He manipulates her into bringing him to Spahn so he can check in on George. QT manipulates the audience by making it appear as if he is flirting with her.
Plus I know the book only just came out, but he definitely wanted to get with her… well until he saw her up close and realised she was underage, he couldn’t really tell through the car window the book put it.
@@JoJoJoker Yeah but we’re talking about when he first sees her, he didn’t know that she lived at Spahn Ranch until he started talking to her because he wanted to pick her up.
The first time I watched this movie I projected too much of myself onto Cliff. I saw this friendship with Rick as resentful and many of the things that happen to him as tragic. But he acknowledges and accepts that he is where he is. He's just a bro to Rick and helps out people who are important to him. He's not a working stuntman because he made it really hard to hire him and he doesn't hold it against Rick. I thought the last night was sad that Rick was going onto better things while Cliff was going to the hospital, but it was just a night where they both knew they had to go separate ways and they had an exciting, cathartic night to end their friendship.
The entire movie characters were a success. Loved Leonardo, and the dog. Be serious, all the characters and actors were excellent. But what about the set. Come on, the best wardrobe from the 60s-70s. and the attention to detail. The scene in the Mexican restaurant wherein the background the waiter was serving a dish where the pan was on fire. Gee I remember those days so vividly. The restaurant decore, brilliant.
To the narrator, he’s putting Tabasco sauce into his bloody Mary. This is very common and mixing it with a celery stick. I’ve seen it done many of times pretty good.
I just watched it for the first time two days ago. Terrific movie, and Brad Pitt really gave the best performance in the movie. Di Caprio had some great scenes as well. I really enjoyed it.
I'm the latest Brad Pitt fan with this movie. He and Cliff Booth were made for each other. He made this movie. Credit to Tarantino for his choices and movie direction. Great stuff all round.
Back in the day when drinking Caesars was new; it was not uncommon to see people drinking them like that with big pieces of celery and some people also enjoy hot sauce in it. Here in Canada, they sell the spicy Clamato juice.
I suppose if you make them out of a book that is what it is, but in any decent saloon it's vodka (a good pour), either tomato juice or V-8. Not shaken with ice, not ever - the shaking action dilutes the drink as the ice melts (unless you're a pussy) from the shaking action. A dash of celery salt, a dash of Worcestershire, dash of Tabasco. Ice in a bucket or tall glass, pour. Add a celery stalk for garnish. Drink!
Where did you get that information about Tarantino and Hamilton? Could not find that anywhere. Saw interviews with Tarantino saying he was inspired by actors he worked with who brought their old stuntmen to work with them and by the old school actor/stuntmen pairings of old (Steve McQueen and Bud Ekins or Burt Reynolds and Hal Needham, for example). Could not find anything about Tarantino even seeing a Hamilton production.
If anyone is interested. I'm reading the new(ish) novelization of the movie, and - it's pretty good. I have a new appreciation for the film, down to how much detail Tarantino provides. The story and characters, including Cliff, are given more depth. Also, and this could be considered a spoiler. But the novelization also expands on the story PAST the film's conclusion. We learn about Cliff and Rick going into the 1970s, making for some excellent reading. Oh, and here's another spoiler: Cliff DID kill his wife. (This is another area the novelization covers.)
Hey great video! Just to put your curiosity at rest, In Canada we don't have Bloody Marys, we have Ceaser's. It consists of Clamato Juice, Hot sauce, and a celery stick. It's quite good.
Theres a reason Rick called Cliff Audie Murphy in the beginning. In the book Tarantino confirms he had the most Japanese kills in WW2 and was the ultimate badass. Also, Bloody Mary's come with celery and hot sauce often. Not bad either. Lol.
So much drooling on Brad's aftershave lingering behind, without truly appreciating his portrayal of all those real tougher men out there behind the spotlight (very appropriate that he lives behind a drive-in) and not looking for any of it. Simpler but no simpletons, just carrying on without fear nor surrender lives much Spartan and in the Now, not looking to Past glories nor laying on old laurels or Oscar performances. Beyond need to brag or prove themselves, long ago not even bugged in such juvenile mindset.

Cliff Booth is a legendary bad ass.
Cliff Booth is stuntman Mike's older brother!! The movie Death Proof stuntman Mike said his older brother Cliff got him in the stunt business.
This video was awesome. Great job, my man. I subscribed. What the hell.
Cliff never flirts with the hippy chick. He manipulates her into bringing him to Spahn so he can check in on George. QT manipulates the audience by making it appear as if he is flirting with her.
Dude, he picked her up. He exchanged eye contact and more many times. Not sure your idea of flirting.
Plus I know the book only just came out, but he definitely wanted to get with her… well until he saw her up close and realised she was underage, he couldn’t really tell through the car window the book put it.
@@RyansEggyRice in the book, Cliff wants to look in on George.
@@JoJoJoker Yeah but we’re talking about when he first sees her, he didn’t know that she lived at Spahn Ranch until he started talking to her because he wanted to pick her up.
Great flick, great everything. Once Upone A Time; great title.
One of the great buddy pictures of all time
Adding hot sauce to his cocktail... Dude that's a freaking bloody Mary 🤣
more pepper and hot sauce is mandatory in a bloody mary
I thought the hippies would kill them but the way Brad Pitt's Character and His dog took them it was a really great ending.
Brad is just to damn gifted and he is totally in a league of his own and he never fails to surprise you just like he did for me in Burn After Reading
To the narrator, he’s putting Tabasco sauce into his bloody Mary. This is very common and mixing it with a celery stick. I’ve seen it done many of times pretty good.
Also Cliff Booth is a epitome of a “Sigma” male
I just watched it for the first time two days ago.
Terrific movie, and Brad Pitt really gave the best performance in the movie. Di Caprio had some great scenes as well.
I really enjoyed it.
Great analysis my friend.
I'm the latest Brad Pitt fan with this movie. He and Cliff Booth were made for each other. He made this movie. Credit to Tarantino for his choices and movie direction. Great stuff all round.
Very enjoyable video. Thanks.
Back in the day when drinking Caesars was new; it was not uncommon to see people drinking them like that with big pieces of celery and some people also enjoy hot sauce in it. Here in Canada, they sell the spicy Clamato juice.
You not knowing what a Bloody Mary is distracts from your video essay. Are you an alien? That’s the real question you’ve raised.
To sum it all up Cliff was a great friend to Rick who happened to be a badass.
Love the way u explain he’s character I want be in life except killing part
If you enjoy the friendship of Rick and Cliff and want more, the book is SOOOO much fun!
Great video. I like the Viva la Dirt League music at 7:35. I'd never heard it anywhere else.

Cliff was drinking a Bloody Mary. It’s 1.5 oz of vodka filled with ice and tomato puree. It goes well with hot sauce and celery.
Drink!
My favorite movie ever.
Never liked Brad much but know I think he’s great. Really brilliant work🇮🇪
Your explanation is dope
You are totally on point
Where did you get that information about Tarantino and Hamilton? Could not find that anywhere. Saw interviews with Tarantino saying he was inspired by actors he worked with who brought their old stuntmen to work with them and by the old school actor/stuntmen pairings of old (Steve McQueen and Bud Ekins or Burt Reynolds and Hal Needham, for example). Could not find anything about Tarantino even seeing a Hamilton production.
Haha, that was all a little joke, although I think Quentin might actually find a lot to like in Hamilton if he ever saw it.
Good video 👍. The celery stick in a bloody Mary is common btw
Aye mate, getting roasted in the comments for my lack of knowledge about cocktails 😂 Only drink the odd Pina Colada myself
4:44 The narrator has never heard of a Bloody Mary
Great video.
Literally every bloody Mary mix has hot sauce in it
If anyone is interested.
All the acting in this film impressed...
Theres a reason Rick called Cliff Audie Murphy in the beginning. In the book Tarantino confirms he had the most Japanese kills in WW2 and was the ultimate badass. Also, Bloody Mary's come with celery and hot sauce often. Not bad either. Lol.
4:40 Thats a bloody Mary, your supposed to drink it like that. xD
