  • Be sure to BREAK IT DOWN!!
We hear a lot of our clients or general dog owners say "my dogs hates" or "my dog would never" ... insert X, Y, Z here ;-) !
    It could be:
    My dog hates the groomer.
My dog will never let me do their nails.
My dog is terrible at the vets office.
    The list is endless...
Far too often though we see people focusing on the end results and desired accomplishments instead of the teeny, tiny steps they could break their goal down into with their dog.
Lets say your dog is bad for the groomer...
Chances are it is not "the groomer" or being groomed, but all of the little things entailed in the grooming process.
New place - maybe your dog doesn't get out much and practice behaving well in public.
Stranger - is your dog comfortable with strangers in their space or handling them?
Handling - will your dog sit still for you to hold them, restrain them, brush them and touch all of their body parts?
Tools / equipment - have you done any work getting your dog used to brushes, a blow dryer, clippers, etc. etc. ?
Kennel time - if your dog is not crated or used to hanging out in a kennel their wait and drying time at the groomers will be very stressful.
This same process can go for nail trimming (get your dog used to all the little steps), bath time and many other activities in life that most people think their dog could never do or is terrible at.
Often times when we are doing dogs nails... it is the restraint, holding still and handling that they have issues with and actually getting their nails trimmed or dremeled is NO PROBLEM!
Pups who have trouble with bath time probably won't even go into the bathroom or get in the tub, have issues with handling / brushing (good luck sudsing them up or towel drying), or many other small issues that make the END GOAL - bathing the dog - A NIGHTMARE!!
Here is a video of us doing some work with Diesel and the tub to get him more comfortable and confident before we work toward bath time!
