I'm new and have been searching for a SLOW, CLEAR explanation of calculating Hit Points. The Players Guide, IMO, doesn't really explain the fact that one has to actually roll their hit dice. I get lost in the author's verbiage, so THANK YOU.
I find that happens A LOT with game design. It's obvious to the designer what it might look like, but to those looking in, sometimes it takes some dissecting. Glad this bit of gameplay surgery could shed like on it!
this is my problem EXACTLY!
finally someone who fully explains it lol. thank u so much!
Thanks @SotiriGameZ! I do my best :)
Thank you so much! This is the first video I could find that fully explains hit dice it detail! I'm a new DM and this has been a massive help.
So glad!
This is super helpful!!! I'm new to D&D and playing with folks who've played for awhile. I think they forget that I'm new, so when I told them that I had never taken a short rest before, they mentioned hit dice and to keep in mind that what whatever I use only half can be gained back at a long rest. It confused me more than it helped but your video cleared it up for me. Thanks!!!
Thank you kindly!
This is a great video. My group is new to DnD and we were really confused about how hit dice worked. This video explains it perfectly. Thank you!
Amazing news! Welcome to the game!
Thank you for this amazing explanation of this feature in the game.. You actually covered every single question. I was thinking of in the entire video.
So glad!
Omg this video is so good. It helped me a lot to understand how it works. Thank you!
I'm so glad!
Thank you for your explanation. I understood a lot.
This is explained so well! Fully understand the system now - thanks a lot and cheers :)
Thanks @Till Gutsdorf! That really is exactly the kind of response I’m hoping for :) Thanks for letting me know :D
That transition scared the shit out of me
For those who want a concise explanation saving you 6 mins here:
Calculating Hitpoints:
How to know how many hit dice you have:
For every level your character is you gain a hit die
If you're a multiclass character e.g. lvl 5 wizard and lvl 5 bard, you get 10 hit dice
Hitdice no.= Total levels gained
How to know how much HP to gain per lvl:
Take your classes die and at lvl 1 gain the max no. on your class die and add your constitution modifier.
For lvl 1:
HP = Class die max roll + Constitution modifier
When you lvl up you roll to gain HP:
HP - Class die combined rolled number + Constitution modifier
How to heal with hit dice:
After a short rest, immediately use however many hit dice out of how many you have to heal.
Roll until satisfied or you run out of dice and add your constitution modifier onto what you healed.
Doing this uses the hit dice and cannot be used again until you regain them.
How to regain hit dice after used after a short rest:
Taking a long rest regains half your hit dice. You can only long rest once every 24 hours - 8h of uninterrupted rest.
Great video and great way of explaining how hit dice work. Much appreciated 👍
You’re quite welcome!
Very well explained :) thanks
Thanks!
Great video! Thank you for explaining!
Glad it was helpful!
Great help thanks
Glad to help!
This was very helpful and clear. Thanks for the explanation!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much!! For the life of me I haven't been able to get it, and the PHB was making no sense, but I've got it now! Great explanation.
Glad it helped!
Just have to say... THANK YOU! :-D Decided to take a crack at D&D after having had a break from AD&D back in the day (though I have played other tabletop RPGs in the mean time). Hit dice, hit dice total , HP and all that confused me a bit. I was blind but now I see!
So I have to say, the books are STILL confusing at times even if D20 makes things a LOT easier. Anyway, thanks again! ;-)
So glad you’re back! 5th Edition is a great gaming system - certainly not perfect, but really solid! Thanks for checking out the vid :)
thank you for the video. people explain this stuff in such overcomplicated ways for such a simple concept its so damn annoying. great stuff.
So glad you think so @unsung heroes. I appreciate the compliment!
This was extremely instructive, and I wanted to thank you for that ! Also, i have a question, if the amout of hit dice you have is uneven (or even if you have one) how many do you gain back after a long rest ?
Ok, so re healing with hit point dice: you regain half your dice after a long rest, but what happens on odd numbers?
I think you round down in D&D, so if I had a max of 3 hit dice, I'd get 1 die back on the first long rest, then the other 2 after a second long rest on another day.
This is great. I'm a new dm and am playing with kids under 10. They are super into the game, which is surprising. The have made it to level two and I had no idea how to actually level their hit points up.
So good to hear!
hey! this is super helpful! question: when adding the con modifier, do you add it every time you roll the dice or just once to the total rolled regardless of number of hit dice used?
The constitution modifier is added after EVERY hit die used for healing. Similar to having added the con modifier to every level you gained. The "Hit Die + Con Mod" combo is representative of how much ability to heal (and thus damage you can take) for every level you've completed. So every time you use a hit die, you should also add your modifier. Hope that helps! 😁
@@ThePlayersTable it does! thank you ^_^
Long Rest:
so at the end of a LONG rest you get all your hit points back but only 1/2 your hit die back if you used them in a short rest ...that is .. that the rule as i read too , ty . At the end of a long rest, a character regains all lost hit points. The character also regains spent Hit Dice, up to a number of dice equal to half of the character's total number of them (minimum of one die)
Thank you so much for correctly using singular "die". :-)
Makes me grammatically whole to use the right words for things. 😝
It’s interesting how you mixed up the plural and singular of die and dice, as they are respectively… plural being die, singular being dice
other way 'round mate
Why don’t you have more videos?! I’m new to DnD and I love how you explained hit-dice and hit-points. I wish you could explain everything to me! Do you have content elsewhere?
Just working through a busy season with other priorities- but my hope is to eventually get back to it.
Great video mate, I'm about to run my first game as a DM and I'm nervous your video helped! One question is after a long rest and you regain your hit dice do you round the hit dice up or down? Thanks
In almost all scenarios in D&D, the general rule is to round down. Hope this helps!
How do hit dice work with multicasting,do you take the best hit dice,or your base hit dice? (D10,D8.)
hey this video was great! just wondering when you regain half your total hit dice do you round up or down. for example if i was a level 3 character and i used 2 if my hit dice on a short rest then did a long rest would i regain 1 or 2 hit dice?
Hey @Zac Isterling - the general rule of thumb across most of the ruleset in 5e is to round down unless explicitly told to do otherwise.
finally, an explanation of what "spending hit dice" actually means!
i wish the PHB actually explained what it was instead of just saying it's something you can do.
i do still have a question, though. when you "regain half your hit dice" with a long rest, is that half of your total hit dice, or half of your *spent* hit dice? like if i'm level 8 and spend 4 hit dice to heal, on my next long rest do i regain 4 (half my total) or only 2 (half my spent)?
You regain half of your total hit dice, with a minimum of 1.
@@kzkaa. awesome, thank you!
Thanks for explaining this. The book doesn't do a very good. I don't think they had this rule in the original ADnD.
lets say you have a multiclass of a wizard and a barbarian which each have two different hit dice how do you calculate that because if you were a wizard who leveled into barbarian would your hp be 18 plus con at level 2
why so hard to understand to me lol so if I'm a, for example a lvl 3 Paladin my lvl 1. rolled stats is getting added to the new stats? Like my first lvl hit point is 10, plus the 2+ modifier, and at lvl 3 I roll with d10 which is now 8 and I add the CON modifier which is +2 PLUS the 1st lvl roll which was 12 at first level add all together what is became 22? Or 24 cuz all the lvl up gives me +1 hit die? Am I right or am I stupid?
Thanks for the informative video! Is there any penalty for doing a short or long rest? I’m assuming you wouldn’t be able to do either during a battle, but if it just requires time, is time rly that valuable of a resource in DnD? Couldn’t you just “fast forward” through the rest and be healed that easily?
Good question @Graham S! Actually, it’s your Game Master’s responsibility to consider time. Time is a really important element of the game, and though every rule in D&D is “open for change”, there are some modifications which can “break the fun”. I suspect time-travel in the real-world might do the same. It would “break the fun” 😬
And sorry... to more succinctly answer your question: short and long rests are based on how your Game Master has built your scenario. The right circumstances have to come into play for a long rest or short rest to be possible - and that’s at the game master’s discretion (to many a player’s chagrin).
@The Player's Table ok cool, thanks!
I love that o chem is not that difficult for me to wrap my head around but I can't figure out how to calculate hit points lol
Lol. Right?!?
Long rest regain half, is this rounded up or down, I'd assume up because if you had say 7 and then only regained 3, after 2 long rest you could only gain a max of 6 back, I couldn't find the answer in the video or handbook.
You are correct!
If I am level 1 and use my hit die, then take a long rest do I get 1 hit die back or 0?
Ah! Good catch! You regain 1 hit die after a long rest at level 1.
Wait, so do you get two hit dice when you level up and can you use hit dice from a long rest to gain max hit points?
24 hour in the game or in real time
I mean like 1 dice to heal and one dice to gain max hitpoints
To answer your questions :
1. You only get 1 hit dice whenever you level up. Your hit dice is equal to the total level you have obtained.
2. No. You can only increase your maximum hitpoints when you level up. Finishing a long rest does not allow you to increase your max hitpoints.
3. 24 hours in-game.
Which dice are used as hit dice?
I am currently trying to create a halfling rogue and don't know which Doce to use to calculate my HP.
My constituion is 15 but do I use a d4 or d8?
Thanks for the comment Jeremy! D8s for a rogue. And it will only ever change if you decide to pick a different class on a different level-up (if that class has a different hit-die).
@@ThePlayersTable thank you so much for that.
I have seriously been stuck for awhile trying to figure out which die to use.
thank you very much!!!!
You are quite welcome!
What happens if you have and odd amount of hit dice 3 for example, how do you regain half of 3? Do you round down or up?
Round down for all but level 1 (of course)!
@@ThePlayersTable Thank you, I thought so but i just had to be sure
@@The_milkers Happy I was able to confirm your suspicions!
How about druid. I'm having a problem calculateing lv 4 and taken the average roll every time.. is it Constitution modifier per level it's confusing the way it's written in the players handbook
Hi Jacob. Same applies to all classes. Hope that helps!
@Jacob At level 4 the Druid class has 4d8 hit dice. When using the "average" method to calulate for HP each hit die (except for the first) is worth 5. Now let's go through it step by step. 8 + con modifier modifier + 3(5 + con modifier) = Total HP. For example, if your constitution modifier is +2, then at level 4 your total HP would be 31.
@@mega_game_play Is correct!
so each level you gain you get another dice to to roll for hp??
If by “roll for hp” you mean, that you roll, to then add to your previous level’s HP, then, yes! You are correct!
This notion is so funny to poke at: with good enough rolls, a character might regain all the lost hit points through a single short rest! Going from the brink of death after being pierced by arrows, lacerated by claws and suffering 3rd-degree burns in the breath of a dragon, to fully healed and beaming with energy after a good little nap! Ha ha ha!
True! I could really use that kind of recovery timeline in real life!
😭😭🙏🙏
As a DM I have zero issues and think it's a fun machanic. As a player, half the Dm's don't use it, get annoyed by it, and just all-around dumb stuff. 🙄
Like asking to use hit die on a short rest at 25% HP being told no than having your character being 2 HP from death while fleeing and another dead party member in the wake.
🤦🏻♂️
Yeah. I agree. That tends to be the way with complicated mechanics. This video wouldn’t be needed if it was simpler 😬
I still don't get it how much health do I have ???
Hi @Day trader. You hit points = your health. Hopefully that helps. Apologies if that wasn’t clear.
@@ThePlayersTable oh thanks
@@ThePlayersTable I'm playing DND with my nephew is it allowed to change the rules a bit to make it as easy as possible
@@daytrader6190 Yes! Game Masters do it all the time. These are generally called “House Rules”.
@@ThePlayersTable oh thank you for letting me know!
Are we seriously at a point where people need explaining that the main thing determining your ability to not die is "more important than you think?"
Evidently.
Turns out, yes?
