Hey everyone I just wanted to add a comment in case you guys are trying to play along with this.. he’s tuning his guitar a half step down then he’s putting the capo on the first fret so hope that helps anyone that doesn’t know that.. God bless you all

Yep... Fret buzz. When the strings vibrate against the metal frets on the neck of the guitar. I'm kind of surprised they kept the recording of that.
It actually adds a nice droning sound that makes the song unique in this case.
I like it. Makes it sound more 'real' is the only way I can think to explain it. I like to hear those little quirks and, what some people would call, mistakes, ring through. It gives the song character.

Can someone explain what the reason is to tune down half a step, but use a capo on the 1st fret? Does that not bring it back up to standard tuning?
You are exactly correct. The tuning relative to the capo is back up to standard tuning. This can throw you off if you play based on where the dots are on the fretboard as these are a shifted a half step by tuning to Eb.
I'm guessing the reasoning is tone related. The looser string tension creates a little more fret buzz anding to the overall sound produced by playing just a single note.
@@bbrandttx Yeah I tried playing along on my guitar but it has an absolutely different tone (mine has a few of the strings much higher pitched) and it absolutely doesn't work for the song. I might be doing something wrong. The first few top (the bass strings) sound okay but the others don't.

Zak Kratzer isn't that how it works..he tuned the guitar a half step down but putting a capo on one makes it sound normal
