It was fantastic flying along with this first time Hawk flyer! In 1983, I was given the opportunity to build Hawk #100 at the CGS plant then in Wickliffe, OH. with the designer Chuck Slusarczyk watching the whole process! He wanted to see how long it would take a normal human being to build a kit! I started in mid May 1983 and flew my first solo flight on Halloween day of that same year! It was a single place (no two place yet) with a 440 Kawasaki and only basic instrumentation. I flew it weekly (sometimes more) from that date until selling it in 2002! The engine for it's last 5 years was a 62hp Subaru car engine that worked out better than we every anticipated! Great plane that made flight for this lifetime diabetic a reality! Everlasting thanks to Chuck for all of his help and endless input! I have to include that I also flew his hang gliders from 1972 thru 1982! I still have my old Falcon 5+ hang glider waiting to go for one more flight!!!! Hell, I'm only 75 now so nothing says I can't get into the air with the glider some day soon!!!!

This is a nice change. The previous owner is a nice guy and was easy to deal with so it will be interesting to see if this what is needed to move forward. I am an owner of a two place Hawk and it is a great plane. I have an HKS engine and it is a shame they decided to not continue producing the engine. Looking at other options is a great idea and having an SLSA version is needed for training and allowing the pilot to pass their check ride in the plane since most examiners are scared to death of anything experimental. Will keep watching to see you grow and expand and I hope it works out.

Back in 1989 or 1990, I was thinking of building a Hawk. As an "Ohioan" I visited Chuck at his home. He put on a demo flight which was pretty cool. :) He showed me around his home and I even saw a patent for the curved boom tube. Thanked him and came home. (lived in NJ then).
About a week later, I got a "letter" from Chuck and said he'd sell me the Hawk (think it had a 440 Kawi on it) for $11,000.00 (that's a little over $22,000.00 in today's money. Didn't buy it - bought a " Super Cat" from First Strike Aviation, owned by Bobby Baker. Yes, mine crashed like a lot of the others. Apparently was "too short coupled." Received the kit, plus engine (447 I think) for around $5,500.00. Wished I had bought the Hawk. :) Went on to build a Minimax 1100 UL, and an EROS 1650. EROS was a fine machine. Flew it over 13 years - put over 750 hrs on it. My favorite, still, is the Piper Arrow. Nice flyer. :)

She’ll handle a 100 H.P. engine no problem. The problem is being able to exceed Vne in straight and level flight if left wide open for too long. But she will climb 🚀🤘 May be worth a call at least to talk with Hirth about a 100 HP two stroke engine option.
Yeah little too pricy for what that is at that price point opens door to kitfox, highlander, and superstol. Why such fancy panel's never going to use IFR moving maps. An iPad can do anything you need. I agree the 912 only going to be used when climbing will consume more fuel and weighs more.
Ikr, I flew a Cessna 150 , speed on that was around 115 KIAS. I don’t know if those things will have a VNE that high.
Rotax 670 from Rick is a 100hp option.
I have a 100hp Subaru engine on a single seat PPC, wondering if it would be to heavy?
Trying to steer away from the 2 stroke personally, due to the ridiculous cost of 2 stroke oil now at almost $50 per gallon!
Fuel economy is getting more important all the time too!!!

Could questions. I know from covering the Aero Adventure a bit... that they don't seem to have any cooling issues having "Open Air" on the Rotax.
there is another motor. the Aeromarine 4 stroke 60 hp HYBRID replacement for the HKS 700E. It's a better motor. cost $10K and has no TBO. I was in the process of signing a purchase order for a HAWK 2 when they sold the company. too many owners over a few-year span makes you nervous if they will be around long. so I decided to back out and convert my aerolite 103 to an experimental amateur. more plane, less money. fly circles around the CGS.
Bryan, saw you on Think Media. I was hoping you had done a segment on the Hawk. It would be interesting to see an interview with Chuck Slusarczyk. He is quite the personality. I've known him personally since '91.

Even fully loaded the CGS Hawk Aero ll is not comparable to a Bushcat in my opinion (same price point). Check out the fully loaded Bushcat (912ULS, avionics, tail-dragger or tricycle config, etc). I understand this is an estimate, but wow... feels very off the mark given the competition in this class. Good video & thanks for all this content!

Good aircraft...FYI "superstructure" is NOT the main frame. Superstructure on an aircraft are fairings, covers & cowls...
Chuck was ??? Has he passed ??? He and Nancy were friends back in the day. Was a dealer for CGS Aviation in the late 70’s. CGS was Chucks Gliders Supply back in the day selling Powered Easy Risers.
Chuck is still with us. His son Teddy passed away a few years ago.

I looked into Ultralights around 2004/5 but never got into it. Now looking into it again and considering Ultralight-type LSA's. I'm considering this and a few others. If I ever get to where I could afford a plane, anyway. Do you know off hand if the yellow frame on the display model there is powder-coated? Considering the price of new planes, I may end up with a used aircraft. Cool planes, thanks for sharing.

I just wish they would figure out a way to get all of the little holes covered instead of all the little gaps allowing air into the cab and could get a set of hard doors on this bad boy.
At some point folks who sell these old ultralight aircraft forgot what made them popular in the first place---the price to what you get ratio is totally out of whack. You can only blame inflation so much. These prices are terrible......I hope the next owner gets that, the Hawk is an amazing aircraft that Chuck built with talent and fortitude, it would suck to see it go away because the new owners want to make a quick buck off of his hard work.

Hola - I don't see any models on your website3 that mee the FAA UL 103 weight reqs. You do have an UL, correct? WHich model is it?
$85,000 for that? It looks like a glorified ultralight even if it is LSA. There are some really nice LSAs out there for just a little more.
THAT.... if you look is fully loaded and he was stating (as this one sits). Full glass cockpit, big tires and brakes and a bunch of other customized things. It isn't a "production" model...but more customized. I believe the typical SLSA would be closer to $65k... but please call and speak with Joseph for a real quote. Thanks for chiming in today. to my understanding, this is basically a manufacturer prototype and you cant actually buy it like this. this would be the LSA price and then the cost of a lot of upgrades. Keep in mind the Rotax 912 runs about 20k on its own.
I had one on a purchase order for $35k. then they added all this bs for more money.....I walked. what do I need 2 more aircraft for?
@@ExperimentalAircraftChannel I walked around this one and have always loved the plane, but glass, really? Totally doesn’t fit the plane at all so one could save big there. The big tires are a must once you see them on the plane you can’t go back, and they do fit the plane. I will also say this it seems pretty tough to fine a used one for sale.
A great video and an interesting little aircraft. As the interview continued there were so many "So" and "um...So...." starts to the sentences, that by the end of the video I was laughing out loud! The quoted price 20k for the kit vs 80k ready to fly seems to be a staggering difference. Might I be wrong in thinking so? Or did I misunderstand the quote? Have fun, stay safe.
Hey! Thanks for saying hello. Those price points were definitely at opposite ends of the spectrum for sure. The "around $20k" price was for the airframe kit at the advanced quickbuild stage (which is what they plan on offering moving forward as a typical kit). Then what was on display was a Factory Built SLSA with all factory options and then MANY customer/owner requested custom options. So that was more of "As this one sits" pricing and isn't necessarily the typical price point. Please feel free to call them direct for more clarity and price quote. Thanks for watching! :-)
Consider there's more than $5000 in instruments on that one and a new Rotax 912 is about 20'000 alone. The 20,000 price for the kit has no engine , prop or instruments.

@@james1795 That's the way most kit aircraft are sold - for some good reasons. Lots of folks want to put on a used engine, or a different brand entirely. If you take 3 years or more to build it you don't want your motor sitting around rusting, and the flat-screen flight instruments would also have gotten cheaper and better.
this has been the aircraft I have been looking at for a first aircraft in a few years. would like to get my license on it and be able to store it in a large trailer and fly as a backcountry camping aircraft. will still be about 4 or 5 years but if these run around 20k for the base aircraft and then have backcountry upgrades i can get as i become a better pilot, this will likely be my choice. they just look even better now.

@@ExperimentalAircraftChannel I will say that the price for a good kit needs to stay under 30K to be competitive. After that a lot of other aircraft with a lot more function become options. He was saying that one in the video was 80K and thats.... alot. at that point id be looking at Cubs and Foxes, or something like a Rans S-21. would also be interested if they could advise on the best way to put a Viking engine on this. I love their reliability and ease of maintenance as well as operating cost so as good and modifiable as rotax is, Viking is more my speed.
$40K Rotax 912 engine on an ultralight... So much for affordable. Might as well buy a Van's. Personally, think the Kolb Mark III is a much cleaner, simpler design at less money.
The KOLB is in fact another great option and well proven design. Certainly. Comparing this Airframe to a VANS is literally "Apples-to-Oranges" though. The engine to power that VANS will cost your around $40k (or more) brand new. You can get a Rotax 912ULS for around $20k. A completed VANS with all Avionics and everything will be much closer to over $100K today. WE absolutely LOVE the VANS designs as well. But we must keep things in perspective.
