That isn’t the reason they only make a mistake with the script and fixed it she was meant to say mute in 2.0 but there was a mistake in translation it seems
I don't find "Rock" as being hostile localization, it's a natural expression in English and on the surface, it's fine to translate it that way if you didn't have the exact context of what Sparkle's true intention was. They changed it because, well oh shit moment. I think it's cool they did that.
Thats exactly why it was rock instead of mute during 2.0, but when english translation sees 2.1 script where sparkle and aventurine talks about the mute, the en translator rralized they messed up and fixed the rock back to the mute.
@@pwpqwq7648 It just didn't make sense with what she later tells Aventurine on how he didn't follow her advice in that he needed to find a 'mute' help in his plan. This was meant to foreshadow that.

i like both. the second one makes a lot more sense and furthers the foreshadowing. the statement about the rock of course alludes to the same thing but its not as clear what shes referring to also the second one sounds more mean which i think is more fitting to her overall tone during this conversation
So here's a fun fact: Her line was changed to read "befriend a mute" just in the first week of 2.0. Cause by the time i got to this point it already had mute, but she still said rock.
I mean she works with Illusions so she might have some skills on identifying what's fake. Maybe the Elation path also has some buff on her too like how Trailblaze makes it easier for Nameless to adapt to different planets.
She's been here longer and riddles are her wheelhouse, plus she has some kind of patron here and we don't know much about who paid Sparkle to come to Penacony, so maybe she had access to more information. The Masked Fools may also have better records of the independence war for some reason, the prisoners were helped by the Nameless, Omen Vanguard, Masked Fools, and a few other factions. Aha might even have a personal presence here through Sparkle. I'm sure we'll learn more about her since she hasn't done anything specific besides act as a human red herring.
[2.2 Spoiler] I know the whole “rock vs mute” debacle is going on with people taking sides with the change, but I just find it kinda funny how both lines fit within the context of the story, because intentionally or not, Argenti in EN did not have voicelines, so he was a “mute” who also helped Aventurine escape, so Aventurine might befriend him. But also, “Argenti” in some languages (from what I researched, Latin and Italian) literally translates to “Silver”, which fits the whole naming convention with Aventurine and rocks/gemstones/minerals, so he might still take that advice and befriend him (I know silver isn’t a rock, but isn’t that kinda a cool coincidence).
Not gonna lie, I like the rock version better. Something about it just feels much better than a mute considering she's saying "since you can't find anyone". A mute falls under "anyone". Just doesn't have that snideness to it that telling someone to make friends with a rock does.
Because it's inconsistent to what Sparkle is really trying to say, which is clarified in 2.1 storyline. When she said mute, she didn't mean as an insult, it was her way of masking a hint on where Adventurine should be looking at.
When she says rock, she is using it as an analogy to refer to robin due to the fact that rocks can't speak, just like Robin. We know she is referring to speaking as she also says in the same line, I think, at least they can't talk back (paraphrased).
Idk but i got very emotional and sad when she mocked adventurine for no reason and even after this level of mockery adventurine kept himself silent and listen her all words snd smiling all the time.😢😢
Aventurine's self esteem and self respect are as low as his height so it's understandable that he feels worthless if he can't bribe someone with money just like how he fails to make alliance with Sparkle. He thinks money and chips are the one he worth for. However fortunately he's smart so he realizes Sparkle just give him a biggest hint to his mission so he could see beneath her mockery as we seen in his discussion with Ratio in 2.1
rock isn’t offensive, but I think “mute” is talking about a specific character like the trailblazer or robin and they wanted to foreshadow what happens
@@misasouperstar8586 yikes this was meant to be under another comment, I meant to ask what was the issue about including rocks in the dialogue that offended twitter?.-.
Kind of a shame. "Find a rock" was better than the original script, as it implies Sparkle respects Argentine [Edit: Aventurine] (who had a chance to join the Tavern) enough to not hit him over the head with her advice.
Her tone and the dialogue didn't match what the story was trying to convey. Even aside from people taking offense, this was just misrepresenting the story and made Sparkle's character really confusing, especially in 2.1.
And what was the problem with rock ?? Like, does certain peoples identify as rocks now ? The word Rock offended some people?? If so these peoples need mental help
It's the opposite. They thought "mute" was offensive so they changed it to "rock", turns out "mute" is actually an important hint for the story so they changed it back.
Honestly, this change feels superficial. Both sentences mean the same thing: befriend someone who can't talk back. The only meaningful change was that Sparkle's previous line was delivered with more venom, while the new one was delivered with more dismissal. I also think the "rock" version is better. A mute might not verbally refute arguments, but they can still communicate to a degree. A rock cannot. There is a reason why terms like "pet rock" and "talking to a wall" are used as insults. Edit: Replies mentioned that there was additional context to the line. I'll admit, I did not know about it. Thought the controversy was about people criticizing the scene for not being a one-to-one translation, but that was apparently not the case. My mistake.
