  • Just because you can run 1024 pixels or more...doesn't mean you have to! Here's how to figure out how many YOU should run from a single controller port.

After doing pixels for years… to be candid and completely disregard budgeting… just get regular controllers and put them near a group of lights. It is way easier and less complicated. Yes more money, but you don’t have all the “power inject this”, or building 8 smart receiver boxes,to do the job that a single regular controller can do, etc… Biggest problem with this approach is finding in stock controllers to buy.

I'm not sure if I'm glad I randomly bumped into one of your videos or not. Strange however it happened but $525 later I'm sitting and waiting for my controller, 2 power supplies, pixels, etc etc to get here to get going. We've been the Griswolds of the little mountain town at 10,000 ft we live but this stuff is gonna blow these people away. I don't (or cant) expect too much my first year. Watched the videos on sequencing and I'll be lucky to have a real simple thing, this year. I'm one if the kind that over does it. So let's hope I don't get too into this!!!
Excited to say the least however and really, I do appreciate your videos. I know what l bought will be utilized, expandable, and quality gear because of you!! I opted to build my own instead of plug ready as well. For fun

Quick question for you, I'm new this world and I wired up 2 100 pixel RIP tombstones last night on separate Hinks Pro ports and ran a quick show over them. One of the tombstones wasn't lighting all of it's pixels at certain potions of the sequence. The bulbs lit up during other portions so the bulbs themselves aren't bad. These are the only 2 things running on the R2R controller. Any idea's?

Your settings in xLights for where the model is assigned does not match the HinksPix settings. That is what causes this problem. I admit, the Hinkspix is pretty difficult to setup, I have one on order and am planning to do a number of tutorials on it once I figure it out!

So just so I'm understanding this:
    Using Kulp controller as reference
    1. If 1 port allows max 800 pixels at 40fps then I can run say 5 strings in series for a total of 250 pixels and be alright without power injection? And if I see any data issues just add some F amplifiers.
    2. now say I have two other strings with 100 pixels total 20ft away. I'd use a smart receiver and another PSU to power those strings. Connect a ethernet cable between boards for data. But this means that it takes away 1 port from the main board right?

I'm new to this and trying to figure out how many i can run off a port. I have my controller built, and software installed. Falcon f16v5, xlights test mode ran, i can power on 2 strands of 50, but the 3rd wont power on at all.

It is likely that you have the port set to only output to 100 pixels, that would cause this issue exactly.
