Betty Boop is not a parody of Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn Monroe was a child (4 years old) when Betty Boop was first released in 1930. Myron “Grim” Natwick (1890 - 1990) with other animators first drew Betty Boop for the Fleischer Studios. Max Fleischer (1883 - 1972) requested Natwick to design a caricature of singer Helen Kane (1904 - 1966) who was the inspiration for Betty Boop.

@@kylemorello4787 Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jean Mortensen June 1st, 1926 - August 4th, 1962. Her fame was through the 1950s through to the early 60s. They say she died of a probable suicide due to an overdose of barbiturate poisoning. But there are some who suggest she was silenced because of her connections to the Kennedys.

The part about them playing Patti-cake is a commentary on the self censorship within the entire TV and movie industry. Think about what was, and wasn't allowed on TV over the decades. Think about a time before a Watershed, or a time before the ability to record your show, and rewatch it. Shows like the Brady Bunch were about a big family with lots of kids, living in a HUGE house. They had LOTS of scenes in every room, INCLUDING the bathroom.....however, if you look closely, you'll see there's NO TOILET. This is because it was considered disgusting to acknowledge the reality that ALL ANIMALS need to pee and poop. It's how you get rid of the waste after the nutrients have been extracted. It took until a show in the 70's to show a set, including a bathroom with a toilet. Another big one was that married couples always slept in separate beds, in a double room. Even in the bedroom, they were always decently covered by a robe etc. Unmarried couples couldn't rent rooms. Birth control was pretty much non-existent. The writers developed all sorts of euphemisms for adult subjects. Terms like "playing patti-cake" is a euphemism for "having sex".....hence his distraught reaction to seeing Jessica in the pictures. This movie has many, many layers. The more you watch it, the more you catch.

  • @Texy88

Whilst _Who Framed Roger Rabbit_ was not the first movie to mix live-action with animation, it *did* have animated characters directly interacting with real-life objects in a way that had never been done before. The bit where a heartbroken Roger was given a (real) drink in a (real) glass, for example, was done with a mechanical arm holding the glass, which would later have Roger - on 2D animation cels - laid over the top, effectively hiding the mechanism and making it look like Roger was genuinely holding the real drinking glass. This same technique was also used for close-ups of when a weasel was aiming a gun at Eddie.

Before he created Mickey Mouse or even Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Walt Disney had made a series of short movies that combined a real life person set in an animated world. Another animation studio did a similar thing in reverse placing a cartoon character in our physical world. Walt Disney also made a number of popular movies that combined live action and animation such as Mary Poppins (the 1960s version) and Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Who Framed Roger Rabbit was made because they were able to go into the animation vault at the Walt Disney Studios and examine in details the rich history of all of the animators who had worked at the Disney Studios before them. If you really want to know how they made this movie you should check out some of the behind the scenes videos available on CZcams.

One of the bullets for Eddie's Toon gun was voiced by Pat Buttram, whom you probably know best for playing one of the veteran patrons of the saloon in _Back to the Future Part III_ ("Musta got that shirt off of a dead Chinese!").
He also voiced some animated characters for Disney previously, such as the Sheriff of Nottingham in _Robin Hood_ (1973) and a drunkard muskrat named Luke in _The Rescuers_ (1977).

I wished that they could have done such a collaboration with the Lego movies. They had lots of DC (Warner) characters, but none of Marvel, which is owned by Disney. Lego has a lot of Marvel sets as well, and it would fit the theme of kids mixing things that don't normally go together. A line in the second movie ("Marvel won't return my calls") suggests that they really wanted Marvel characters as well.

    Great Reaction Video...
Disney and Warner Brothers had stipulations that their cartoon characters had to have equal screen time.....
It is believed that Robert Zemecks cast Christopher Lloyd as Judge Doom to prevent the sutdio from trying to film back to the Back the Future 2/3 without him directing....
In the club, Betty Boop is voiced by Mae Questel, who Originally voiced the Character Betty Boop (premiered in 1930) and Oylive Oil in the original Popeye Cartoons, and provides the "Blessing" in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.....
The speakeasy room created an Effect now called "rocking the lamp".... cause of how the shadows rock with the lamp...
"Harvey (the Rabbit)" is a 1944 play, they made into a Movie with James Stewart in 1950.....
"DIP" is made from Acetone and another chemical that are used to "CLean" animation cells/film......
Jessica Rabbit's Voice is Kathleen Turner (Romancing the Stone)....
Other movies with Human/Animatied scenes: Anchors Aweigh (1945), Song of the South (1946), Mary Poppins (1964), Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), Cool World (1992), Space Jam (1996). There are more but these are the ones that spring to mind......

Betty Boop was based on the singer Helen Kane, not on Marilyn Monroe. Betty was a well established character by the time when black and white cartoons were watched not on TV, but in weekly periodicals in the movie theaters, like Popeye. Betty was probably the first cartoon made with adults in mind, with her suggestive presence and adventures that got her clothes in disarray and show her underwear from time to time, until Fleisher Studios was forced to make it more kids friendly.

    1. The first time I saw this was in the middle of the ocean. My ship (USS Tripoli LPH-10) was doing a "Tiger Cruise". That's where crew members could bring "male only" family/friends to join us from Hawaii to San Diego. There were displays set up on the hanger bay. For entertainment there was an area to watch movies. This was one of them.
    2. There had to be equal time for Disney and HB characters.
    3. LOVE the adult inuendo
    4. Christopher Lloyd as the heavy.
    5. One of the cartoon bullets is the voice of Pat Buttram. He played Mr. Haney on "Green Acres".
    6. This was Mae Questel's/Betty Boop's third to last gig. Her last was" Christmas Vacation". (RIP)
    7. To make it look more realistic they painted shadows into some scenes.
    8. The tunnel going into Toon Town is the same one they use in the "Back to the Future" movies.
    9. Favorite character is the Baby

The Dip is an actual mixture of paint thinners used during the Golden Age of Animation. Characters and objects were drawn and painted on plastic sheets called "cells" that would overlap a watercolor backdrop. Cells were expensive, so the animators would have to dip used ones in paint thinner to wipe the slate clean and reuse it.

"Scotch on the rocks" is a popular way to order scotch whisky, which is a straight pour of whisky served over ice cubes. That’s what Eddie ordered, but instead of ice he got rocks in his whisky lol.
Betty Boop is not a parody of Marlyn Monroe. She was one of the most popular cartoon characters in the 1930s, long before Marilyn Monroe became a cultural icon. The character of Betty Boop was inspired by Helen Kane, a popular singer and actress known for her hit 1928 song “I Wanna Be Loved by You.”
Goofy is one of the most iconic Disney characters of all-time. He was the cartoon dog that Roger and Eddie were watching in the movie theater. Great reaction, but you're the first person I've seen react to this film, who's cut past the entire toontown sequence! What happened, copyright issues? The Toontown sequence is great fun because it reverses what we've seen in the whole film so far and has the human character interacting in a cartoon world rather than the toons interacting in ours. This film, of course, inspired a whole new land at the Disneyland resort in California in the early 90's. You can still go visit toontown and meet mickey and some other Disney characters to this day. And for 20 plus years you could also go on "Roger Rabbit's Cartoon spin" where you got to ride in Benny the cab and drive and spin your way through various setpieces from this film. I remember the wait line being one of the most interesting ones at Disneyland too, as it took you through back alleys like the ones depicted in the nightclub scenes. You'd see things like the club door with the gorilla bouncer looking at you through the slot, and the shadow of jessica walking past her dressing room window inside. Then later the dip machine churning and pumping the nasty looking yellow liquid up pipes as you walked past. It was a fun ride for fans of the film.

😎👍 That closing scene at 48:48 required the cooperation of five different studios: Disney (Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck etc), Warner Brothers (Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck etc), Paramount (Betty Boop, Koko The Clown), MGM (Droopy Dog) and Universal (Woody Woodpecker). The legal wrangling involved in making that happen caused a lot of headaches among a lot of different studio executives. 🥴 Should you ever decide to watch Disney's "The Adventures Of Ichabod And Mr. Toad" (1949), you might want to put on that padded bra in advance. Katrina Van Tassel was the first Disney princess with a distractingly oversized bust.
