I’ve been using the DB One cymbals at our practice space for over a year now. Band members love them for not blowing their heads off in a tight space. My biggest issue with the cymbals is that they’re stick destroyers.
You're sort of right. They definitely can be. Years ago I started striking "down" onto my cymbals (vs going straight for them, like hitting a nail into the wall). So for me, it hasn't been too much of a problem. And I'm still hitting pretty hard... but the angle really helps with that. Glad they're working good for you.

I have no idea about music or playing the drums, but I admire your enthusiasm, the way you play and that you can tell that you put your whole heart into it. That's an amazing achievement you're showing, and even I notice that, as someone who actually has no idea about the subject. I have been drumming for 50 years and still on tour. My schedule is crazy as you know. When I get to come home, I like to practice around 2 to 5 am daily. I'm ordering a set now!! Great video! I purchase the db one low volume drumheads & cymbals, love them, now we have our rock practice with them, the band loves them, they can hear themselves better, we can actually talk while i play the kit! Great product, and for the same reasons you mentioned. Thanks for the video!

There he is! Believe it or not, I actually came to your channel yesterday to see if I had missed a posting. That's nice that you're considerate of your neighbors. Man, I'd love to learn how to play the drums, but they just can't co-exist with Sheltie rescue & taking in dogs with heart failure. Maybe one day... (Edit to add: I posted before the video finished. So glad you finally showed the bear commercial - or at least a part of it, lol).
I remember reading you rescue animals. I think that's terrific for so many reasons. I've never understood why people would get an animal, just to throw it out with the wash.

Thank you for validating everything I fought and argued against with my last band when they repeatedly asked me to switch to an e-kit for either practice or recordings, none of them could understand why it was so uncomfortable for me. I kinda have some lanky limbs and e-kits, no matter the set-up or brand, I could just never play the same way I do on my full kit.
Everyone is different, and everyone is in a different situation. But I'd honestly rather beat on a chair, and just ask the engineer to put a mic on it. Why? Because at least the sound from the chair is a REAL sound (produced from how hard I hit it, and where I hit it). But again, that's just me. Some people love e-kits, and if it works for them, then I think that's great also. 👍
Very well said. I have both an acoustic kit and an e-kit that have different applications. E-kits are great BUT don't quite replicate a real kit. They're improving all the time but not the same yet.

I've even been taking my practice kit (with the mesh heads) to band rehearsals lately, because it makes it easier for everyone to focus on the tightness of things. Yea I know, I haven't mentioned anything about a new project... but it's coming soon.

That's really nice to hear! It's extremely intimidating to do these videos. I'm "slowly" getting more comfortable with them, but it's a very different animal. I'm accustomed to playing live (where you can see people, and get a feel for what's working). When you record, you're looking into a camera, not knowing if what you just said is "funny or pathetic." LOL But I appreciate the kind words. 🙏

I appreciate it. I've been thinking a lot about doing something like that. I'm just chewing on the best way to "present" it. Soooo much of what I do comes naturally for me. So it would be like Jim Carey (the comedian) trying to explain how to be Jim Carey. LOL But I agree, I think people might enjoy something like that.

They've honestly worked very well for me. The heads are OK, but the CYMBALS are just insane.
totally get it about E kits & practice pads..they are just not the same ..and it could throw you off when you do get to your acoustic kit ...100% agree

I had 4 Electronic drum kits but i couldn't get the feel of them and sold them, 1 was Alesis Command , and the other was a Alesis Nitro was the latest kit but I have been playing on the Acoustic Drum kits sense I was 7 years at that time and now 52 years and Back on the Acoustic Kit Tornado MAPEX now we just moved into Apartment Building and I decided to Build a 2 in 1 Drum Kit it is now Acoustic / Electronic on the Bottom heads there is a
5 Piece Pearl Mesh Heads along with 5 clamp on Red Shot single tone Triggers, and I am using a Roland V Module as it is made for the phono 1/4 inch patch cords you can use Dual tone as well, but these clamp on Triggers are only single tone, Sounds great, oh yes I can still play outside on the same kit in Acoustic, my Top Heads are all 5 Piece Evens Hydraulics'. 👍
This might be a good option for me. I'm married and have 2 dogs. My drums are set up in our detached garage, so I am lucky to get an hour in once a week. At this volume, I could play every night after work
I can only speak for myself here, but I really like them. NO, they're not exactly like real drum heads... but they're close enough that I'll still sit down and knock out 10-15 minutes (several times a day) just working on little ideas. Where I likely wouldn't have gone to my studio to try and same idea. But if I just have to walk 5 ft across the room, I'll do it. Surely that doesn't mean I'm lazy does it??? 🤣🤣🤣

Greetings Steve. Look for the positive side. The neighbors will not bother. Neighbors for me are a second Family. But you can always see one person or another who gets in trouble because of the supposed Noise in their eyes. You made the best decision. In my personal opinion. I travel, I play, I go home and I play on electronic drums for now. For the same reason, but soon I will be building a new studio where I will not have problems with anyone. That's incredibly kind of you to say. I'm grateful I had such a "positive" influence on you. Watching someone like could have steered you away from music all together. LOL I'm glad you like the kit, I've alway loved it. The finish was a stock finish. I believe it was White Satin Pearl (or something very close to that). Unfortunately they discontinued it a few years ago. When the drum is new, it's very white... but it fades into a "yellow" sort of color at it ages. I personally LOVE that about the finish. It gives it character. However TAMA discontinued it, because they can't really "match" the finish. So if your drums are 5 years old, and you order a new one, it's not going to match. Fortunately I got all of the drums at the same time, so they have aged together.... kind of like my poor arms!!! 🤣🤣🤣

I use these with remo fiberskyn heads as resos and they actually sound awesome. so much extra body and good tone.
it's all about the resos and tuning for these heads.

I'm mainly a guitarist, but I also play bass and drums. I had two complete 20 piece drum kits (Tama and Pearl with Sabian and Zildjian cymbals). I lived in a townhome, and being the respectful neighbor that I am, I bought muting pads for my drum heads, but that wasn't good enough. My neighbors could still hear it loud and clear, and complained anytime I tried to practice. Maybe I wouldn't have sold my drums if I had this kind of setup. I'm going to buy a house on a nicely private plot of land soon though, so that will no longer be an issue! I'll be converting a bedroom into a music room, and buying another drum kit without a care in the world about muting them!
That's everyone's dream! I've always wanted to live on a dead end road, for the exact same reason. LOL But as I said, I'm lucky, because my neighbors are great. I never take that for granted.

BUT THAT WAS A GREAT TIME. YEARS LATER I DROVE FOR LIMO COMPANIES. DROVE THE EAGLES, RAY CHARLES AND MANY OTHER BANDS. LOVED THE BAND YOU WERE IN. JESUS LOVES YOU ❤❤❤
I remember playing a set of Slingerland Drums when I was in high school. And a few after that. I thought they were amazing!!! They sang for days. My first set of drums were actually Premiere drums. I played them for years.

I really appreciate that. Unfortunately it would be very disrespectful to TAMA to do that (as I signed with Tama several years ago). However, I still have my old Ludwig Kit in storage.

Honestly, I've gotten offers over the last 5 or 6 months to review (or endorse) certain products... but I just can't do it!!! If I don't believe in something, I'm simply NOT going to tell people to speed hard earned money on it. I just can't do it. But I honestly play these things every day. Maybe not for HOURS, but I sit at my kit (practice kit mentioned) every single day, and knock at lease a few minutes out.
So glad I live alone i play as loud as I want I have my kit setup in the middle of the living room with all my other 19 kits I have stacked up around me have never had a neighbor complain ever but basically yah a drummers worst thing they can do is annoy people drums are a very difficult instrument to practice on when there are other people around you these heads and cymbals are rather impressive 🥁🥁🥁

I've been on the fence about these heads , there's others too like RTOM that are similar you probably have seen them ? You can add triggers to the Rtom set and they just go straight over your acoustic drumheads.
Love the Evans and now will order a set or 2.

The RTOM stuff looks good as well. It's nice that you can just toss them on, and pull them off. However, the tradeoff is dealing with that little lift on the "rim." I don't care for that, as you have to slightly adjust your angle. Same with the kick, it places the beater just a little too far out (sooner than it should be). Again, these are really small details... but those small things bother me. But they go on and off really easy. It's just the tradeoff of what bothers you more. LOL

I have been using these to practice for a couple years now, I agree w/ everything you said.
I have noticed when tuning the skins there is a certain tension where they come to life and have areally nice tone.
Also I don't have to wear earplugs and I don't destroy my hearing.
You're right. I've also found it's a pretty small "sweet spot." As soon as I'm there (with the tuning) I STOP. Seems like it goes away if you go past that spot.
Because the band has to play at a volume that the drummer sets, this could be a huge game-changer!
I've got UFO low volume cymbals with Tama mesh heads on my Hyperdrive kit - of course with double pedals. I couldn't be happier, but most importantly all my surrounding neighbors couldn't be happier either. I'm in a top flat and have neighbors one to the left, the other to the right and one below me.
On the historical side of the story though, when I started becoming serious in drumming back in 1994 no mesh heads or low volume cymbals existed. This year, at the age of 44 I had to convince my 70+ year old mum that I'm not disturbing the people around me with my drum kit :D
...and these days I'm learning Bleed by Meshuggah on this kit :D
Meshuggah is on a different level. They are soooo good. Bleed is a staple. You only have to hear about 2 measures and the "horns" come out!!! 🤘🤣🤘

You may have just saved me a ton of money, I'm a guitar player with free drumset in my garage. Not surprisingly my drummer hates the kit, I was thinking about getting some v-drums but the 3k price tag (once you get stands and pedals etc) has held me back since I'm not a drummer, but buying a better kit and these heads/cymbals is half the cost and might make my drummer happy when we use my garage as a backup rehearsal area.
The good thing (in one way) is, you can even buy garbage drums (if needed) and put the mess heads on. That way you don't have to break the bank on the drums. The cymbals (with the holes in them) is the game changer!!! Because a drummer can still FEEL them. I'm glad the video helped. :-)

A great way to keep good neighbors being good neighbors. It's a win, win situation. You get to practice & the neighbors stay happy.
Again, I'm lucky. We've always tried to respect each other, as well as "be there" for each other. I wish everyone had neighbors like mine. People would be a LOT happier. :-)

That's what i like about the mesh Cymbals and now the Mesh Heads ,
I end up selling my Pearl Drums , Cause I moved into a Condo and I turned around and bought the Electronic drum kit and trust me they're Not the Same feel as the Original Acoustic Drums, So now i bought another Set of Pearl Drums,
and bought the Mesh Drum Heads with the Mesh Cymbals, My Wife said finally the loud noise is gone asked my Wife to take a walk down the hallway to the Elevator I played the drums hard , she came back and said well did you play them i said yes she said she never heard them. 👍 You can also use a set of drum triggers as well if you are doing a gig but you will need a Module for the triggers to activate there is no need to change out the heads keep the Mesh heads on your Kit.👍
I know what you mean. I try to never rip on anything or talk about different products (aka: electric drums) because there's a need for everything (depending on a person's situation). I like the mesh heads, but those cymbals (with the holes in them) are a game changer for me. I LOVE those things!!!
@@themaddrummerofficial all good to go as I Custom Designed my Acoustic drum kit, all Completed it is now a 2 in 1 drum kit it is Electronic and Acoustic that way I can play the electronic in the house and play on the same kit outside in Acoustic.
@@themaddrummerofficial Are you having the same issue as i am having with that VidIQ because I had 60,k views then 2 weeks later 55k and now 550 Views so i did some research on them and they are asking for $30 monthly to gain more Views so how can i remove them from my Channels as I was doing great without them in the beginning. they added them self's to all of my Channels.👍
From 10’ away. Normal playing on my kit is registering no lore than 90db at the highest. Mostly around 85db.
I've always found it so interesting how sound changes, depending on your perception or position. Meaning your kit will sound completely different from the other room, or upstairs, or down the hall, and so on. Most people already know this, but that's why Zeppelin records sounded so amazing. They went out of their way to always find the "sweet spot" to record from. Well... and John was a MONSTER! LOL

Sure, all of the bottom heads are Evans G1 Clears. As for running, the bottom heads are a bit tighter than you might expect. I basically tuned the top so that they "felt" nice. Then I tightened the bottom to the point to where they "sounded" nice. It went pretty quickly, it wasn't very taxing. Since making this video, I've added a LOT of blankets in the kick drum (like a LOT). I'm liking that a lot better, because it "feels" a lot more solid (feels more true).

im at guitar player at heart but been playing on a electric kit for last 2yrs and anytime i try to play on a real kit it feels so foreign its opposite of u but the same lol u get what im saying
It's not a HUGE change... but it enough to bother me. But I'm like that with everything. From my computer and phone, to folding clothes. LOL I'm pretty obsessive about things being consistent.
Steve do the heads tension like the standard batter head? As you talked about feel, was wondering if it was close. And the reso head, are these mesh as well? This setup just might be the spark I need to play at the house again.
The reso heads are just standard heads (but I have them a bit tighter than normal). The feel isn't that bad. Now it does NOT feel like a normal head. It has "some" of that tennis racket thing... if you know what I mean? It's a bit bouncy. HOWEVER, it's really not that bad. I've played a ton of mesh heads in my life, and most are just horrible. That's not the case with these, they're pretty good. The REAL magic is in the cymbals. The cymbals are just incredible!!! They feel nearly perfect, and they sound and react like normal cymbals... just not as loud. Hope that helps.

Exactly why I've never been able to make those little practice pad kits useful either.
For some people, they work great. But I've just never had any luck myself.
i have been a member of your FB,,,,and on youtube,......for a couple of years.....anyway,,,,,,is there a way to letting my cheap mapex sound more like the Tama you use,,,,....i played pearl for 8 years

A LOT of the sound comes from the tuning. Having good heads goes a LONG way. So you shouldn't get discouraged at all. It also takes a long time to get decent at tuning. So again, try not to get discouraged at all. Another thing to keep in mind, is the "production." I record using Logic, then I send it to my buddy Jim Dofka to mix. That's where a LOT of the sound comes from (his gear, and his mix). They wouldn't sound the same way if I did it. LOL I'm just not as good as him. I'm sure he would make your Mapex Kit sound awesome as well. 🤘
I use the heads but bought cheaper low volume cymbals off of Amazon. Both work well for me and allow me to play all hours of the day.
That's what it's all about. I'd rather practice 15 minutes every day, vs 2 hours once a week.
The cut feels/sounds almost exactly the same. Just quieter.
What drive shaft are you using for your double kick ?

I can't lie (well I could, but it wouldn't be very nice). 🤣 It's not as "rewarding" as playing normal drumheads. But for me, I'd rather play the dB One Head on a real drum, vs playing an electric kit. That's just me, so take that with a grain of salt. But I really feel it's a great compromise (considering the volume difference).

They are a bit pricy. Not gonna lie there. You just have to think about how much you're get from them. If you don't "need" them (and are still able to practice in your environment) then that money could be spent on other gear. However, if you're in a situation where you simply CAN'T practice (because of volume) then I'd argue that they're maybe more important than your real drums. Because practice is so important. But everyone is in a different situation.
@@themaddrummerofficial In my situation I use Roland Electronic TD-!7 drums. I do like what I saw in your video, so I may price them.
That's great, but again, I stress this: If you're doing well with the Roland Stuff, then I don't know that I'd worry too much about it. 👍

I wish I could answer that one. You may still get some vibration from your kick drum, no different than running across the floor. But they are waaaaaaaay better than smashing a normal floor tom. LOL

I'm really sorry to hear about that. I have a company do all that for me now, so I don't really have any involvement with the shipping end of things. Sometimes shipping overseas can REALLY be a problem. That's the reason I have a company do that now. I had too many problems doing it myself. But I'm honestly sorry things aren't working easily for you. :-(

I’ve lost 40% & climbing of my hearing. We did not have good hearing protection back then. Sheets over the drums & cymbals worked fine back then & will now as well. Why spend $$ when that works? Save your hearing & save a crap load of $$. You’ll need to save for hearing aids later…. Sounds exactly like sheets over drums & cymbals… but then again - I’m not getting paid to promote these items.
To be fair, I only endorse products I use myself and "completely believe in." I've been asked to promote things, and I've turned more down than you could imagine (because I thought it was junk). LOL However, I COMPLETELY agree with you on the hearing loss!!! I preach that constantly myself. I'm almost completely deaf in my left ear, and my right ear isn't that much better. Going deaf happens slowly. So you don't realize it, until it's almost gone (unfortunately you know this as well).
The sheets over the drums and cymbals isn't a bad idea (for some). However, there's not way I could practice cymbal chokes and things like that with sheets over my hi-hat. LOL But as I say all the time "everyone is in a different situation." Thanks for watching the video. I really appreciate it. 🙏
I have had hearing aids for 2 wks now. When I was fitted the tech had the volume up to a level that people normally hear at. I was almost in tears it was so loud & that I had lost that much hearing. I use AXIL hearing protection products now for rehearsals & sometimes performance. Very slight latency but you get used to it & compensate. We didn’t have tech like this back in the day. I’ve played in Bagpipe Corps all my life & thats what really did the damage. Arrrrgh…. W/a Scottish accent….

Exactly my problem. I can’t even talk w/people anymore. i just point when I don’t have the H aids in. I did it to myself. I also have unbearable tinitus. It is just screaming in my head. I hope you don’t have that. It is AWEFUL. 40 yrs & getting louder. Be well my friend & play on no matter what. I am.
Hey - practicing with Blasticks is also fantastic. For that matter - backing up an acoustic band as well. i always loved brushes…
