    This is the video I have been waiting for so long!
    My c220d's battery is so old, not just the eco stop is blocked, but it also requires an hour long drive to be recharged, after 2 days idling. I don't think it will make though this winter. But all the videos I found didn't contain so much useful info as yours, so I just kept waiting.
    Thank you so much!

      Hi William, thank you for taking the time to watch my video. The thing is. The battery was working fine for normal operation however I think they just lose enough juice to kick the start stop in. Thank you for the compliment, of course there was a moment where I worried if it would solve the problem and if I had purchased a battery for no reason but it was sure the issue! And such a simple DIY.. especially now it's confirmed the battery does not have to be coded as some claim! Appreciate the comment thank you.

    Excellent video. Just changed my battery on W205 220d. I was dubious about not using a 'secondary' battery but in the end decided that I did not want live terminals getting in the way when I was putting in the new battery. I followed Gavin's video precisely and all went well. Radio and electronic came back on without any problem although I did have my radio code standing by just in case - I've just got to show that the Start/Stop works. I got 6.5 yrs from my original battery and hope that the replacement last as long. Thanks Gavin

  • @Harrybollox
    @Harrybollox Před 2 lety +9

    Thanks I used this to change my battery. Here’s a few discoveries for others. The grip that holds the battery in place does not need to be removed, it is on a bracket that rotates forwards to circulate the battery grip/bar out of the way. If you remove that deep bolt fully, it’s overkill, and worse as in my case, that rotating metal bracket under the battery tray can fall out, it’s only held in place clipped into the plastic, you don’t want to have to get it all back together.
    Note the plastic cover that goes up to the windscreen has to sit nicely in the rubber channel under the windscreen to keep water out. . When it first comes out it’s stiff if it’s never beeen removed but it does come out after loosening the two clips. Same with the battery cover itself. It will come out but will be stiff . I suggest tie back the negative cable as it gets caught under the battery when loading it.

Damm Mercedes is milking money of Their customers. Thank you for confirming that there is no programming needed when a battery is changed now I can just replace it for half the price for the same original battery.

      Nope I had it confirmed with the main dealer after myself receiving multiple conflicting information regarding coding but 100% does not require coding. • @George-1939
      @George-1939 Před rokem

      What's all this talk of an auxiliary battery? To my knowledge there's a main battery but the stop/start also uses a capacitor which is located in the passenger foot well behind the LH trim panel - it rarely goes wrong. Which raises the question, if the main battery produces volts why doesn't the capacitor still charge to enable stop/start? There must be some electronic trickery that monitors the main battery voltage and disables the feature below a preset voltage so that the battery is saved for actually starting the car from cold.

  • @calonzo67
    @calonzo67 Před 3 lety +4

    I read that you only need to tell the computer you changed the battery if you change the type of battery. Since you replaced it with the exact same type of battery, you don't need to code the battery.

    • @GAVINHR

    • @GAVINHR
      @GAVINHR  Před 3 lety +2

      I'm sure I said that in the video? It was a fair few months ago now but actually I did. I charged the battery fully about a week before this video to see if it made any difference, the battery within a few moments showed as fully charged, it is the battery which loses its capacity over time so in terms of the power which it can hold it may still be full but down to age doesn't actually hold the amount when it was new.

    When you change the battery on a W205 you need to reprogram the Battery Management System (BMS) to tell the car that the battery is new. Its important because the car adjusts the amount of charge it puts into the battery as the battery ages. Hence, if you put in a new battery but do not reset the BMS, the car will overcharge the battery for its young age, reducing the life of the battery in the future. Many scan tools can be used to program the BMS (e.g. XTool D8).

    Just to say in my case I've got a 2011 C220 CDI W204 model and when I turn the key the ECO green light comes on with the ECO in yellow on the dash. But as soon as I start the engine both the light and the ECO display then turn off and stay off until I stop the engine and then turn the key again. I must say this has only started happening since I just had my car serviced. I replaced both my main and boot batties in November of 2021 but I don't think the battery in the boot or the front engine bay is the issue as I say all was working fine until it went in for recent servicing. So I'm at a loss as to what's wrong and I don't want to fit a brand-new battery and still end up with the same outcome. So any suggestions as I said everything was fine and now ECO just turns off every time I start the car.

      Update in my case replaced with band new battery and I've still got the same problem. Turn the key and ECO in yellow comes up on the screen and the green light on the dash. But as soon as you start the engine both the ECO and light shut off after a couple of seconds. so it's not a battery issue so will continue to look into this and update you on what I find. So don't always go rushing out for a new battery.

    • @AnthonyPaulus-ub6mx
      @AnthonyPaulus-ub6mx Před 2 měsíci

      A further update I've changed the battery relay in the boot and even tried using my old boot battery which I knew to be good and still I've got the same issue ECo turning off after starting the engine. So now I'm at a complete loss as to what's wrong. Will now book the car into Mercedes to have them check the car out on the STAR diagnostics system to find out the true fault as it's not battery-related at least in my case it's not.

    First thing I do every time I start my car is turn the stop start (or eco as they call it) OFF. I've said since cars started getting these systems fitted that they must shorten the life of not just the battery but the starter motor as well. Unless you spend more time sitting still than moving the gain in fuel economy isn't worth it, not with a new battery being £150 and god knows how much for a starter which most people wouldn't fit themselves. I guess the only upside is that when it stops working it's early warning that the battery is on its last legs.

I am now thinking more along the lines of the battery, the battery has never been changed since new 2015 and Car has 80Km. The Eco function works ok, I really hate the feature. Do you think the battery could be causing the car to jerk? Or the plugs???

    • @MrDavidchuck
      @MrDavidchuck Před 2 lety

      @Mario G .. anything electronically that malfunctions points back to any or all of the electronic sources (being battery, alternator, auxiliary). Meaning that it can actually still be engine related. I’d do a much better job telling you what the issue is if the vehicle were to be in front of me. And I’m saying that because it ranges from many possibilities what the issue is that you’re dealing with. But from how you’re describing it, it’s definitely spark related. If getting them cleaned or replacing them with new ones doesn't help, then you need to adjust your fuel levels. You’re probably running too lean.

I have took to Halfords to test battery he said the battery is fine and took to second garage he said batt needs changing as on 35%. Was wondering if it could be the main battery and before replacing to a new one is it possible to charge the old battery and reinstall that or best buying new one? If so was looking at the Bosch s5 a11 if this is a good batt. Thank you.

    • @GAVINHR
      @GAVINHR  Před 3 lety +1

      It's more about batteries losing their efficiency over time. So you could have the battery on charge but due to age it will not charge to the correct amount required to activate the start stop. I would suggest the Halfords AGM 115 battery it's a straight replacement ( please check ) and it's actually a yuasa battery. I think the main battery is the problem and will of lost some of its capacity over time.

    Never buy replacements battery, always buy the original, you earn enough to afford an original battery, you don't drive a Corsa, you drive a Mercedes, FF sake. If cars has a start/stop button you ALWAYS have to adapt a new battery, you're English and you don't understand this so always adapt a new battery with the OBD2 interface, just do it, also you have to "learn" the windows closing because it doesn't work because of the battery replacement. The UK Mercedes service stations are mostly staffed by ordinary local people who don't know much about technical matters and are replaced by immigrants from the EU who have knowledge and experience in technical matters, as in my case when I go to a Mercedes service station I tell them what to do with my car and it is recorded on video so later that I can see what has been done. I only go to a Mercedes service centre to have all my service history or any replacements documented so that they are done at a Mercedes and not in some garage next door. Don't mislead people into thinking that changing a battery is so easy, new cars are not old cars without on-board computers where you could change the battery like in this video 🤨

  • @jurassiccoast
    @jurassiccoast Před 2 lety

    You don't understand some things, it's good that you bought an AGM battery but Haldfords is poor quality, always buy the original one, just replacing the battery is half the battle, ou have a start/stop button in your car - you MUST code the new battery otherwise the new one will wear out faster, there are videos on jutube on this subject

    • @GAVINHR
      @GAVINHR  Před 2 lety +4

      You must code the new battery eh? Thanks for that delightful insight. However I would value a main dealerships practice and advice over a CZcams video. If you watched the full video I told you main dealers do not code batteries. Oh Halfords are poor quality are they? Maybe yuasa will be upset at you hearing that since they make them. That's funny as the 'original' battery didn't last 4 years. The poor quality battery as you call it comes with a 5 year warranty. Makes sense really doesn't it. Maybe since you understand so much more than I do why are you even watching my video rather than sorting it yourself with your deep knowledge?
