Funny how Nightmare 5 even though underperformed, was still the highest-grossing slasher of that year, that itself is a massive win 🤣 Freddy really ruled the 80s horror cinema!
I just so happened to have seen all three movies in the theaters that year even tho I was a little kid my older brothers took me with them to see them and it was awesome
Jason Takes Manhattan has some fun moments though. The rooftop fight always makes me laugh.
Same. I always make sure to catch the rooftop fight as it never fails to make me laugh my head off. No pun intended.
@exiledentertainment7545, yes, me too, & Julius is one of my favorite characters in the Friday the 13th franchise.
1989: The Year of the 80's Slasher Purge.
The 80s horror memories theme song is so good I’m gonna miss it, it needs to be uploaded somewhere
This needs more likes so it gets done.
I love all three of these movies. The slasher genre was well past its peak but there’s still some great 80’s cheese in all of these flicks. Each one has its redeeming qualities and never miss them in a marathon.
There’s nothing redeeming about any of them. Especially Jason Takes Manhattan which should be called Jason Takes A Cruise.
Always loved Nightmare 5: The Dream Child. I think it serves as a perfect third chapter to the ‘Dream trilogy’ that is Nightmare 3-4-5. I’m actually really impressed by how well these three films flow together during my rewatch last Halloween, one of the genuine trilogies in horror. I find it to be the Scream 3 of the Nightmare franchise and it should get a good reappraisal when it’s due.
Story wise it wrapped up the Amanda Krueger backstory perfectly and concludes Alice’s arc as well, which I think is the ultimate final girl of the franchise. It also nailed the Nightmare sequences with some impressive visuals and a sick gothic soundtrack. The kills are few but they are all top kills of the franchise. The characters are genuinely likable and well performed, Alice especially, she’s both vulnerable and strong and that’s what makes a great final girl, Yvonne’s character is also a highlight as she went from a non-believer to the MVP of the third act. Criminally underrated entry IMO.
Your comment is spot on and you summed up the movie better than I was able to. A Nightmare on Elm street is my favorite horror franchise because I always loved the dreamscapes and nightmare sequences which I feel all of of the Nightmare films nailed. I especially loved Alice's sequence in the shower in the beginning of Nightmare 5. I am going to have to watch 3,4, and 5 together. I have the box set that includes all of the first 7 films. I used to draw comics of my favorite horror movies and a few originals of my own in junior high. I drew a scene by scene comic of Nightmare 5 and my classmates loved it. I allowed a boy to borrow it and he never gave it back. I hate I lost all of that good work. lol
Couldn't agree more. I re-watched 4 and 5 recently because I hadn't seen them in forever. Once it was done I was sitting there saying "why did I like 5 more than 4?". 5 is visually stunning. Considering it had many writing issues, I found it more coherent than 4. The thing I enjoyed more about 4 is how Freddy died. Other than that, I think 5 is a much stronger film with a more compelling story.
I still love Jason Takes Manhattan because it does veer so far from its roots, and I enjoy Halloween 3 for much the same reason. I listen to "Darkest Side of the Night" even now; great song.
I went to the drive in and saw all 3 of these. Thinking the next one would be better... in "arrested development" voice over, they never got better. What a long, horrible night
Oh yes the darkest side of the night baby
Burns like a fire for the wasted lives!
Tyler this is the year I've been waiting for. I actually saw all the big 3 in the theater. The Best of times.
While none of these are my favorite of their respective series, I can't help but have a fun time reliving the memories of when I saw them for the very first time (all in the theater - "Jason Takes Manhattan" was my first "Friday" I got to see in the actual theater). None of them are outright terrible and tend to be just fun to get up with every now and again. Another stellar episode with a stroll down memory lane! Can't wait to see next week's entry on "The Man" - Tom Savini. Cheers!!!
I would say the best horror sequel of 1989 is Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland… it’s fun in a cheesy way
agreed
I was disappointed when it came to the dream child the movie poster was changed for the VHS copy
As soon as I hear Tylers voice, I click like 💯
Captain Spaulding deserves a spot on the horror icon list
No way
He's good but I'd give him b tier
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who truly loves NOES 5 😄😄😄
You aren’t alone. I loved it too and always defended it. Looks like there are a few others in the comments
I've always thought that it had some of the best visuals of the entire franchise!
I love Noes 5
You're not alone. Re-watched 4 and 5 back to back recently for the first time in decades, and 5 was easily better.
@@CoryGarrettfacts
The 80s was a great time. Even the bad slasher/horror movies have became legendary!
Art the clown is definitely on icon level, terriffier 3 will seal the deal for sure.
I hope they do 90s horror memories
Not many great 90’s horror movies
Manythnx and have a great weekend all at JoBlo🤘
Michael & Jason deserved better
I agree, luckily F13th redeemed itself with the 2009 reboot and brought Jason back to his badass self.
That Halloween 5 mask is so disrespectful that I couldn't take Michael serious in the movie every time he is seen lol
Friday the 13th Part VIII, Elm Street 5, and Halloween 5 are awesome.
I think that Elm St 5 is still a cut above Halloween 5 and Jason Takes Manhatten in that it is still actually watchable. Dream Child is great when you view it as a dark fairy tale, and it introduces some great backstory moments.
The last character to become iconic is my boy Jigsaw...
I legit just watched Halloween 5 last night.
I liked Jason Takes Manhattan. I won't argue that it's the second weakest of the original 8 films (after part 5), but it's still a fun time if you go in wanting a silly ride and not actual horror.
1989 was the last year of the slasher era and i think by the point all three franchises we're getting played out but of the three Manhattan is the more entertaining
I always wondered why at the end of Halloween for Michael rises up like Nosferatu instead of getting up?
Damn 1989 A Lot Of Horror Movies That Year Some Good Some Bad.
What? The DREAM CHILD is amazing. My favorite in the franchise. It has a gothic atmosphere. The teenagers were the best. They managed to go further into the Amanda Krueger story. And Alice was at her best here.
Agreed for all the reason you said. Criminally underrated and deserve a re-appreciation
Loved the gothic atmosphere of the film! The film deserves 2 stars just for the wonderful nightmare sequence of Freddy's rebirth in the church. It's a boy!!!!!!!
This subject would of been a great topic on a little show called arrow in the head show. 🤔
Nightmare 5 wasn’t the lowest body count for Freddy. He only has 1 kill in Freddy vs Jason.
Ghostface and Jigsaw are probably the 2 biggest horror icons to come after the big 3. I also love the killers from the Strangers franchise but they're not that big
The Dream Child's pretty bad and Jason Takes Manhattan is unintentionally hilarious.
Hey now I think Friday the 13th part 8,Nightmare elm Street 5, Halloween 5 are under rated!!!
I wish those with the Friday rights could realize that they could just make a new film that picks up at any part of the lore and give fans 90 to 120 minutes of carnage on the silver screen. No reboot, no reimagination, just take what worked and go. Set it in the 80s and remember that with a reasonable budget and love for the genre, anything is possible.
By 1989, the feel of the '80s was pretty much over and gone those of us living through it will probably conclude and realize now that 1988 was the last year that still had that classic '80s vibe to it, by '89 you could sense change in the air and the '90s already. Ok, it wasn't all bad in the '90s it was after all the last decade of truly good movies in general while TV wasn't all that great and music the pits.
The last great recurring horror icon is jigsaw
Out of these 3, I would watch Halloween 5 over the other 2 all day.
Watching this series, I've come to realize that I'm not that big of a horror franchise fan. As much as I love the first Halloween, Elm Street and Friday the 13th, I'm not that into the films that followed. Halloween has never been good after Season of the Witch, Elm Street after the 2nd one and Friday the 13th lost its appeal after Part 3 although Jason X is a guilty pleasure. The problem for franchises/icons is it's a case of diminishing returns as people fumble to come up with a franchise arc. Now, if filmmakers came up with a franchise arc before they started even the 1st film, they might stand a chance at creating a coherent movie series...I'm lookin' at you Halloween. :)
Of the 1989 slashers from the big three, I go with Friday the 13th 8. There's little blood, but there's a lot of humorous moments and Jason is so cool. Nightmare 5 has awesome death sequences, but the story is a bit of a mess. Halloween 5 is OK for a marathon filler.
I couldn't agree with you more! I had a chance to see both Friday the 13th part 8 and A Nightmare on Elm Street 5 at the theaters as a kid. My dad dropped my stepsister and me off to the movies and even purchased the tickets for us! My stepsister was murdered by her abusive boyfriend so this movie always brings back fun memories of her. For that reason, it will always have a special place in my heart.
@@hshawn00So sorry to hear about your stepsister, that’s awful that happened. I’m glad the movies bring some good memories of her.
Dream Child is far from the worst. Rachel Talalay will forever hold that honour with Freddy’s Dead
I definitely wouldn't call these movies bad sequels. There are things to love about all three. Yes, Halloween 5 is disappointing for some of the bone head decisions the producers made (like killing off Rachel), I've always loved the look and feel of the movie. It's one of the few Halloweens where it truly feels like Autumn and the Halloween season. The pacing of the movie was pretty good with some great sequences. However, the mask in part 4 was bad but Michael's mask is downright awful here. Also, Dr. Loomis character is almost unrecognizable here.
As far as Nightmare 5 and Friday 8, they will always have a special place in my heart because I got to see them both in the theater. I actually saw Friday the 13th part 8 twice that summer. While I understand the disappointment with most of the movie taking place on the ship, I enjoyed the movie. The lack of blood doesn't bother me because I'm not a gore hound. I love suspense more. I loved Rennie's connection with Jason and all of the supernatural elements. It's unfair to call this movie bad because it's not.
A Nightmare on Elm street 5 has it's moments. It's carried by the great Lisa Wilcox. You talk about a lack of kills but it was also a lack of Freddy in this movie. With the subplot of Dan's parents trying to take her baby, Freddy was barely on screen. If the film had a stronger ending, I think it could have been a better film. I hated all of the silliness in the ending. Still, I wouldn't call this movie bad. If you want bad sequels, look at Friday the 13th The Final Friday and the awful Freddy's Dead. Terrible movies!!!!!
Me to bro 😎 this you tube Horor channel just comments what they always say they don’t care what us slasher fans think 🤔 it’s their opinion🤘🔪🍿🥤
@@davidcurry332 I couldn't agree more. Makes me wonder about them. Lol
I will always defend Halloween 5. So not as bad as people say. Is it a great film? No. Did they make mistakes with it? Yes. But, it's still a solid film. Danielle Harris gives a stellar performance even though she's mute for most of it. Amazing for a child. I just truly dont understand the mass hate that it gets. Annnnnd, i like the mask. At least it was the same throughout and didn't chop and change like it did in 4. Dont gwt me wrong - 4 is a much superior film and one of my favourites, but 5 is just so damn fun.
Oh, it's a great film, and THEN some. There is not another film in the series that is as relentlessly anchored to the elements that made the original what it was. I know from endless experience....of those who claim to hate it, about 30% saw the first 20 minutes, back when it came out, and never finished it, and another 40% are confusing it with 6. For those who hold up the '78 classic as the prototype, there isn't much in Halloween 5 NOT to like...
If Filming Would Have Been COMPLETELY DONE IN NEW YORK CITY… Jason Takes Manhattan An Amazing Movie! Probably one that would have ended up in everyone’s Top 5 Friday The 13th Movies!!!
I love both Jason Takes Manhattan, & the Dream Child, but Halloween 5 is truly atrocious! 🤮🤮🤮
0:44 Freddie Mercury, Jason Donovan, and Michael Jackson?
I enjoy Halloween 5. I dont understand the hate. I don't like house change, but the mask looked better than 4
Of course. 5 is built on the same motif as the original....lots of Myers stalking his victims, and Loomis stalking him. It's one of the best in the series.
I would confidently say that Art the Clown is the next modern day horror icon. One that can compete with other icons like Freddy, Jason & Chucky.
I want it to be, but I’m not so sure. I don’t know why, but I think horror fans are like heavy metal fans, who always say that “there is no good bands anymore”.
I may - and I want to - be wrong though.
Hell no he can't! How dare you!
That was my first thought. We'll see how this year's film goes, but I was totally gonna comment "Art the clown" also.
@@mightybitchy I confess that I have to watch the movies again. When I watched it, it was only for the sake of gore. I didn't pay too much attention to acting and script.
Personally, I don't think Art has the wider public appeal of the classic characters. Art primarily focuses on gore and that can be a real turnoff for the average viewer.
Yet all guilty pleasures. Especially jason takes manhattan
You guys need to leave longer time to read your trivia.
Man I hate the MPAA
Manhattan was awesome. Sure 90% of the movie is on the boat, and only 10% is in NY...but it's still a great entry in the franchise...plus that intro is iconic and kick ass. That Metropolis song still bops like hell...Dream child is ok...some good deaths, just too bad MPAA gonna MPAA...wish we'd get those uncut fully restored one day before i die, but unlikely...DC also fully canonizes that Fred was a Brian Pecker and did the deed to the lil kids.
Man I agree with everything you said! I was just listening to the metropolis song this past weekend. It's such a banger and it now drips with nostalgia for me. My friends and I movie hopped the summer this came out and saw Friday the 13th part 8. I actually had a chance to see it twice at the theaters. I love the movie. Sure, a large part took place on a the ship but still, it's a fun movie to me and certainly not awful like they are trying to make it out to be.
@@hshawn00 I love Manhattan! And also my favorite part of after he finished with Kelly Hu how he just throws her away like a candy bar wrapper. Cold
Tbh while I admit Manhattan isn't great, atleast it's better than Goes to Hell
Even if it takes place mostly on a boat and in New York Toronto, it was nice to see Jason in a fresh change of scenery.
@@SixthTundra1987 GtH is the worst friday in the franchise. I said that in 94, I say it 30 years later in 2024 lol.
For me shocker was the best horror movie of 1989 horace pinker was kool
Jason in New York is my favorite one.
Mine to always my first interaction with the crystal lake killer 🔪
That’s like saying Resident Evil dead aim is your favorite Resident Evil game
The 90’s follows ups weren’t any better either - Final Friday, Freddy Dead and Halloween 6 were all atrocious.
I have a soft spot in my heart for all three of these movies but they were some of the first entries in these franchises that I saw. Jason takes Manhattan was literally the second or third Friday 13th film I ever saw. I used to have a chopped up for T-ville version on a VHS tape that my mom taped off of cable one night. Anyway, I love Jason takes Manhattan and I think it gets a very unfair shake. If you don’t think it’s a good Friday 13th, that’s fine but look at it through the lens of just Nice slasher movie and I think it really bumps up the value. Think about it, what other slasher movies in the 80s or otherwise did what Jason takes Manhattan did? Don’t think of it as a Friday 13th film, but a slasher movie about a supernatural killer who is resurrected from the bottom of a lake and goes on a killing spree, ranging all the way from a cruise ship to New York City. No other/or film has ever done this and I think that movie deserves props for that bit of originality alone. whether or not you think it’s a good Friday 13th film, it is a unique, slasher film, 80s or otherwise.
I agree
Jason Takes Manhattan > Dream Child
I like Friday 8 most between Nightmare 5, Halloween 5, and that. I like Halloween 5 more than Nightmare 5. Nightmare 5 doesn’t do it for me because one, Dan is killed off way too early after living in 4 (he was the Rachel), yet they try to emotionally use him in the 3rd act. Not enough kills, and while Dan was gruesome, I didn’t find any else memorable for scare factor. Super Freddy was camp. The feeding scene was also camp.
Halloween 5 did do camp, but not for the kills, which is the only reason why I rate it above. Halloween 5 is cruel at times, but not scary. Too many annoying characters.
I liked JJ and her kill scene. I liked the roof top kill. I liked the subway scene and the diner scene. Even the little sliver in NYC is iconic. That’s why it’s the only one I rewatch.
👍👍👍🎥
ngl, i legit like jason x 🤘y'all have a badass day🤘🍻🤘
My takes for each film talked in the video are
1. Jason Takes Manhattan, I consider it as a not a good film yet it's still better than Goes to Hell to me. Even if Takes Manhattan is easily tee worst out of the 80s F13 Films for me.
2. Elm Street 5, this one is pretty terrible and also includes that Freddy Child that's really annoying, atleast it gave us some of the best kills in the franchise.
3. Halloween 5,yeah this one is the worst out of the 3, legit it SHOULD have been both Michael and Jamie as the killers, yet we got this awful Halloween installment.
And that's my takes for the films.
I love all of these😅😅😅😅😅 i think there is a place for trash garbage installments 🤷🏽♀️
I will take these movies over anything made in the past decade. Yes. I mean that. I will die on that hill happily. 😁
Pinhead, Ghostface, Chucky, Leatherface, Pennywise shouldn't they be in this "pantheon"?
1989 was a bad year of horror.
It was like they were rushing as many horror movies into theaters before the 80s ended.
There was no 'bad' Halloween movie made in '89....Halloween 5 is one of the best in the series. Not because it's different, but because it's the SAME. Halloween 5 is basically ALL Myers stalking people, and Loomis stalking HIM. There is not another film in the series that is so relentlessly anchored to the essential elements that made the '78 classic what it was....
Say whatever you want for the 13th creeps me out I hate the woods and I think a lot of people that do fight Jason is just a Woods type character. A lot of people don’t like the woods and they don’t like the water so I disagree with you on that and I I’ve always will put other fans comments just like this if you don’t like the woods and you don’t like the water fire 13th is a creeepy move when you can say whatever you want that’s my opinion and always will be and I know I’m not the only thing that’s gonna comment again till you get it.
Would IT be one?
I have to wonder, why not just take the x rating? Embrace it and use it as part of the marketing
Only one I can't rewatch on this list and not have a guaranteed good time is Dream Child. That was most definitely the series' jump-the-shark moment
Watch Batman or Rain man instead, lol.
Does this guy have an aversion to pronouncing the letter t?
