    My band director back where I used to live said something very similar, it was "If you can play it fast, you can play it slow" of course I never doubted him since he has his Doctorate in music theory, but this just reminded me of him

  • @ChrisFarrell
    @ChrisFarrell Před 5 lety +2

    I see this is this is just part 1, but for me a lot of the issues with accelerating playing speed was fixing various hand positioning issues. So when trying to play quickly in the throat tones or over the break or whatever I could get up to some limit of what my hand position would allow me to easily do - 120, 132 if I was lucky - and I just couldn’t move it any faster. I’d have to stop, break it down, analyze the efficiency of my hand motion and figure out how to do things with more economical motion or without getting the hand jerked out of position for whatever I had to do next, build up more efficient motion with a ton of slow, mindful work, and *then* I could break through whatever barrier it was that was holding me back. I actually found the advice of “just slowly click up the metronome speed” (which is what I was taught back in the day, but I realize is not exactly what you’re advocating here) very damaging because I would hit a point where I just couldn’t progress and I’d get frustrated. It wasn’t until I really focused on hand position and some of the alternating rhythm techniques that I could get the speeds up.

    Love the video! I'll definitely try this out, since I'm a senior in high school who actually gotten serious with my instrument last minute, and I'm pretty awful with "fast finger technique".
    Question: Do you want us to disregard practicing our pieces slow (lower tempo), but instead play our music faster, then lower the tempo to "fast"?

    • @earspasm
      @earspasm  Před 5 lety +12

      Dear god NO. Nononononononono! Play pieces VERY slow, then get them up to tempo. THEN (and ONLY then) start practicing them faster.

    I understand the fast-really fast-fast feel slow thing. Whenever I’ve listened to the all-state etudes as they’re released, I’ll listen to it at normal speed, put it on a higher speed, then go back to normal and do the same in practice

    Hi Michael, my teacher put me on the "Vade-Mecum" of the Clarinet-player, by Paul Jeanjean (from 1927), and specially on the first 3 studies, very effective. I'll see about the Velocity ones, thanks, Richard.

    • @earspasm
      @earspasm  Před 5 lety

      Vade-Mecum (and all of the Jeanjean studies) are great. These have some similar exercises as those, so if you’ve done that, you’ve done the first couple of books of these. In that case. I’d suggest getting the advanced book if Velocity studies. That should keep you busy for a good long while.

    Speaking of gutter, whilst tuning with my stand partner at last evening’s rehearsal, I realized I said, “Can you pull out a little? I can’t push in any more.” The horn player in back of me snorted. Things only clarinetists can say and not be in the gutter!

    When I can play, what I'm currently practicing, at more than 1/3 the speed I'll come back to the "faster" approach. Howerver by then the gig will probably be over. (Short term vs. long term progress ... both want my time)

    • @grima5788
      @grima5788 Před 5 lety

      You can certainly try playing the same music, but because Eb is a 5th away from Bb, it may sound odd. In addition, alto clarinets are kinda the black sheep of the clarinet family, with not a lot of music specific to their role. You're welcome to look though.
