Born Nimrata Nikki Randhawa, she grew up as the daughter of Sikh immigrants from India, but later converted to Christianity. Back in India after four decades, Nikki Haley speaks to NDTV about meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York and whether as a rising star in the Republican Party, she came under pressure to disown her Indian roots.

A lot of us second generation Americans who’s parents/grand parents immigrated from India have drifted away from India the same way itialian Americans or Irish Americans have drifted way from Ireland or Italy. With each successive generation the link evaporates. My parents took me to India as a kid, but as a adult I feel no connection to the country, land or people and have no desire to ever visit, or take my kids there.

Govenor Haley never once denied her heritage or her love for her parents and the place she was born and her parents were raised. Many times a person here running for office will make jokes or try to act like they are embarrassed because their parents are foreign.Gov. Haley never once ever stooped low like this. Many Indians are well respected here. There is a dr. named Patel that is the chief neurosurgeon at the USC University hospital in Charleston, SC.He is also the dept. chairperson for the Neurosurgery School and chief professor. If you are wealthy and your child is born paralyzed Dr. Patel is the man crying parents with their pockets full of cash they will call on. If you are poor they will call on him too. Dr. Patel will come running to the hospital even at 3 a.m. in the morning regardless of who needs the help. How can we not love and respect a man like this and the parents, country,and religion who made him this way? BTW , I am a Christian white man who as lived my whole life in the south.
I think as a white male, you won't be able to see the nuances of the situation. She has very obviously denied her heritage even with changing her name, marking herself "white" on a survey, etc. Loosing Punjabi is also a lame excuse, she could have always learned it again but chose not to.

Truthfully, it is hard to absorb culture thousands of miles away when the family is just trying to survive. She doesn't hate her parents or India. She was just exposed to one culture more than the other and this is the result. There is no Punjabi classes in the United States as there are English classes in India. They assumed Trump would be jailed or otherwise prevented from running and all of the attempts fell apart. Don't count Vivek out, because he might just become Vice-President.
