    1 Hans Christian
    2 Frans Maas
    3 S&S
    4 Bavaria
    It's very difficult to beat a Hans Christian for both live-aboard or off-shore sailing. And a cutter rig which is my absolute favorite rig setup. Cool video

    Wonderful video and fascinating to compare such well known designs, but so different from each other.
    We spent quite a bit of time at KBL having arrived there first in early 2014. Our boat is a 12 ton Gauntlet - built in NZ of native NZ Kauri timber (carvel planked) and with a (then) 50 year old 60 hp 4 cylinder Fordson diesel. She was first launched in 1978 in Wellington, NZ.
    For those who know, Gauntlets are double-ended and, being designed in 1934 as ocean cruiser/racers, performed well. In their day they were successful English Channel racers and ours apparently once won a race across Cook Strait - an infamous body of water! But the double ended design did mean that space down below was limited but for just the 2 of us, she was fine.
    We left NZ in 2011 and sailed via New Caledonia, Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia to Thailand. Soon after arriving in Thailand in 2014 we went to Chennai, India where Jean underwent double hip replacements - time interval between hips was 3 weeks. The experience was faultless and the surgeon, Dr. Vijay Bose, was among the top 5 orthopeadic surgeons in the world.
    We have many stories of our time in Thailand and Malaysia and our haulout experiences - some good and others not so!!
    We remember Mark at KBL and having many conversations around the bar! Great memories.
    Sadly our sailing home of 10 years was sold in Turkey and we are now living far from the sea in Medellin, Colombia.
    To read about all our sailing adventures you can read our blog - www.tiaretaporo3.blogspot.com and email is tiare.taporo3@gmail.com Recent blogs since 2018 are nothing about sailing, but instead containing some politics - if you enjoy that!!

  • @paulbennett7743
    @paulbennett7743 Před 5 lety +4

    I had a Hans Christian 48 ketch- Pacific Pearl, great boat but so much work to keep in reasonable cruising condition. During the 23 months we owned her we spent twice her sale price - plus a lot of sweat
    Before that I had a Bavaria 49, great boat but felt like a product more than a boat. I have nothing to complain about with that boat but never actually felt like it was a boat.
    After the H C 48T, we bought a Catana 42 catamaran. That was the best of all the boats I ever owned. We sold it purely for monetary reasons and will buy one again one day soon.
    But we now own an ior 37 foot boat and it is great. We own it as someone gave it to me for about 7000 pounds
    The best boat from the three compared, given I have owned similar boats was the Catana - a catamaran.
    Great videos btw
    Paul

Hope you're staying well and catching more fish 🎣

You guys take in a lot more money so I can see the value. I'm still just a little guy on You Tube and in Patreon so it hurts a bit more LOL... But I'm going to try them out anyhow. For $15 a month it may even be worth it for me.

      What I particularly like are the stems. You can download each track broken into bass, melody, instruments etc. This makes it much easier to fade tracks by cutting the drums four or eight bars before the end, for example. You'll have a lot of fun going through the library, Larry, and don't be afraid to experiment with genres you wouldn't normally look at. I particularly like the 70s rock!

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec Před 5 lety

      I don't really understand what you mean by breaking into bass, melody, instruments etc. But I know how busy you guys are so don't worry about it. Maybe sometime you could explain it to me in Email. I'm running around in there listening to music. so far 90% of it seems repetitive and not much like what I hear other people using on YT. I used the same track as this one for a video I'm working on now. Hope you don't mind. It just fits.

    I owned Mas Alegre from 2006 till 2015 i bought from Ed Vaughan who owned her from 1982 till 2006 she originally raced on the West Coast of America LA area winning many offshore races. Ed first cruised her from LA across the Pacific to New Zealand from there shipped her back to LA where he went back to work in Hollywood where he worked as Producer / Director for many years. He left LA again in 1987 went across the Pacific up to Hong Kong across to Sth Africa i met Mas Alegre in Durban in 1990 Ed actually sailed with his partner Julie Spence whom he said many times was the best crew he ever sailed with she sailed with Ed for 10 years on Mas Alegre. I think the circumnavigation finished in 1993 or 1994 after seeing them in St Maarten in 1993 i didnt see Ed & Mas Alegre till 2005-2006 in Yacht Haven Marina i know after arriving back in LA , Ed later cruised with different crews nth to Alaska , Seattle etc before leaving LA again i think in 2000 to Hawaii then into the Sth Pacific across to Australia then back out to Fiji and back to Australia up to New Guinea then nth again to Hong Kong and across to Singapore then Phuket. As mentioned i bought her then and Ed well he found the place he wanted to live in and stay i am very sad to tell you all that Ed died 3 days ago at Phuket Bangkok Hospital i miss my friend vaya con dios Ed

    I am torn.... it's between a Hans Christian 33 or a Lord Nelson 35. I like the head forward and being able to get to the chain locker. V-Births are not for a fella my age. The coachmen's bunk works and the wood interior is a must. I don't need to go fast and like the heavy displacement. The people that own them seem to take good care of them too. The galley on both looks great. I am trying to find out what there is not to like with these two models. If I had a bitch it would be that there doesn't seem to be a good spot for a solid fuel stove.

      That would be the Ives design, great layout for a 33', I'm torn between the Perry 34' ,which is a much rarer boat, and the Ives 33' both great little blue water boats

    Would've been nice if you had put boat info up on screen as you started talking about each boat. I couldn't even tell what any boat was that you were talking about. And..I still can't figure out what kind of boat you're sailing! I've been searching and can't find any info. Your ketch kind of looks like amel super maru but I don't know. Hi! Offcorse the renovations of the boat must have to take the time it takes! When you are oute on the oceans it !must! Be in order! LIFE hangs on that! Seems like some people don't really understand that! Wondering, do you have a sextant with nessesary utensils for navigation in the old way? If, if, if the fancy system would colaps? Just a thougth! IF, Would not happend the boat i would like to have is a Hans Christian BarbroSweden

Don't think most of the smaler boats have sextant abord I was for fun looking at the sortiment at the market on the net sadly to say that the most one I saw was not real one . Perhaps they are available in GB or Germany or perhaps in a Skip merchant in Gothenburg! Fancy brass things for decorations is not the functionality that helps on the sea! Faire wind's! BarbroSweden

    The '70's era boat with the IOR rule have a look you love or hate , but that tumblehome just gives me goose bumps! One of the best survivors of the era was the , believe it or not, a Catalina 38, www.catalina38.org Catalina bought the mold of a S&S racer, and modified it quite a bit into a better , faster boat but with a full cruising interior! , they are now highly prized yachts. Buy the way, tumblehome is a great way to protect the toe rail on a boat too! Cheers Warren

      Always had a soft spot for S&S, Paul. Can't share your enthusiasm for cats but of course the Outremer is a class act and would leave us for dust. My main issue with cats like the Outremer is that I wouldn't be able to stow all the crap we've accumulated over the last 12 years!

    • @Aspen51

      Sailing followtheboat - having lead a transient life (16 yrs Military where you carry what you own) Pardoned after 27 yrs of marriage (didn't want what was in the house anyway) it's cathartic to review / renew & replace ( :-) ).... This is my 1st "performance" cat & its 2nd hand, very lucky with the fit out from the original owner matched what I needed / wanted, update of the Nav / Radio electronics..... Lithium + Solar, Water maker + Compressor......
      Space wise I am fully fitted to support 4 x divers (she who should be obeyed & 2 sets for guests), 1st/2nd level tools to repair / support the boat systems....
      But the main thing Jamie is the ability to pick up the skirts & run! (Think Brave, brave Sir Robin here)..... Safety is the ability to GTF out of Dodge when needed, hard to do on a keeler unless in fully crewed stripped down mode......
      I have done my time living +/- 3-45deg heel! I hated the idea of going multi's however (the significant other) she grew up on a cat (with 4 siblings home schooled to Un) PART OF THE COURTING PROCESS WAS .... yes - learning to lurve cats...... It has its down sides (double the chance of things going wrong) - we went through the refit tribulations exactly as you & Liz, came out of it wiser (& yes poorer LOL) but for where we are heading & have planned, is suits.... but Sir, G & T's at 15knts reaching - ahhhhh - to be experienced mate!

    • @followtheboat
      @followtheboat  Před 5 lety

      "He ran away and he ran away" 😂 OK, you're making me jealous now, Paul! Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike cats like some do, I just prefer the mono movement, albeit at just 7 knots. That said, we have seen some great cats out there and we get the attraction. We did consider them when we were looking to buy Esper but back then cats were very expensive and outside our budget. There seem to be a lot more of them these days. I sailed a fast cat from Spain to Gran Canaria and the speeds were incredible. I just got a bit tired of beating into wind when we hit a storm. It felt like the cat wanted to divide into two - the galley was like a scene from Poltergeist. An Outremer is in a different class though. They look like a lot of fun! Who knows? Maybe we'll cross over to the dark side yet. Fair winds to you and the family. I look forward to that G&T at 15kn when we meet 👍
