Hey everyone! Very glad to say that after a few rounds of unexpected events, I'm back to regular uploading!
I'd like to thank all of you who have been patient during this winter as so many unavoidable events prevented me from working on Night Mind. If you follow my Twitter, Tumblr, or Facebook, then you know that there were some really sudden and unfortunate life things that happened with barely any time in-between--it was as if once one was dealt with, another major blow struck, and I found myself looking at a lot more painful aspects of this world's ability to shock us than I (or many others I care about deeply) expected.
I won't go into details, as those are private, but it's been enough to really make me appreciate something I've always felt under certain circumstances: if there's ever something you need to tell someone you know or love, take the opportunity while it's open to you. Do not let the moment pass you by and generate regret. As sad as it is to say, that "better day" to say what's been on your mind to someone you care for may be taken away from you and many others without warning. Lives can change overnight--sometimes for the better, and sometimes, for the worse. This winter has shown me and many people I know how important it is to be braver than any hesitation you have about letting people know what they meant to you and getting closure on things that matter.
And I guess that's why I tell you guys so frequently that I love you and how you've made my life so much greater than it's ever been.
Anyway, that's it for now. I'm back to regular uploading and working and very, very excited about it. Thanks for sticking around during the dry spell.
Your words are rather ominous, but it's clear you're not exactly about to vent to your fans. All I'll say is, if it's anything like I suspect, I've been there. And I hate that I know how it feels. One of these days, Nick, we're gonna talk. I hope I can offer the same intellectual discourse you deserve.
Night Mind I would give you a hug if I could.
Welcome back Nick!!
Sorry man. Life can be cruel. Be strong and keep u up the good work
It's good to have you back Nick!

TopHat Sam Asking the important question here...
Another good clue about Grandma Baker is the way the family seems to ignore her. Nobody talks to her, nobody wheels her around or even acknowledges that she exists in any respect other than the name on the map.
Thrackerzod Ph'phlegeth she's more mobile than she appears. Besides, while her physical body is ignored, they are VERY aware of her presence and influence.
N
When I had my arm cut off in the game, I literally thought "jeez this is a long death animation"
Yeah, it's really long. Like 10-20 hours.
@@FFKonoko Well really the death animation is only 20ish minutes. The rest is just dead animation.
"You have no special treatment because you are the protagonist in this game"
*Proceeds to reattach arm and leg with magic juice*
Well, technically Ethan was infected
The son gets his arm back too.
You can reattach your limbs, they can survive bullets through the head, several of them.
Your shiny penny of healing is nothing to their mutation powers

well turns out he was dead the whole time and was a mold man so it makes sense now
The green leaves and fluid have always been a feature so it's not special treatment.
"Punished by a man named daddy"
Greatest line out of context
Especially in that voice!
Yep.
Ayo 😳
For some reason, Grandma Baker had the opposite effect on me for most of the game. It kinda clicked in my psyche that Grandma wasn't going to get out of the chair, or at least that's what they wanted me to think. It sort of gave me a sense of comfort that there was a person that wasn't going to attack you outright. Then, as expected, the game throws a twist at you and she turns out to be Eveline.
One of my favorite details is the fact that it would seem that Lucas, throughout the course of the game, is not as infected as his family.
He doesn't have any monstrous transformations, though he does have the regeneration (though evidently first aid juice can get the same effect.) There's evidence that he's been given a cure so that he can spy for the researchers down below.
Unlike the family members, Lucas isn't killing because of the mold. He's just like that naturally. And yeah, that's probably obvious, but I just love that little detail.
I really like this game. I'm not a Resident Evil fan, but I'm definitely a fan of this game.
What you just brought up isn't even implied - it's straight up confirmed. It's revealed in the final stretch of the game that Lucas has been in cahoots with a group called 'The Connections', which is dedicated to the distribution of bioweapons on the black market (the same group that Mia used to be a part of). He hasn't been taken over because he was provided with an antidote so that he could record the combat data and the effects that Eveline had on the Bakers in order to further refine her design - he only pretended to be a puppet so as to not arouse suspicion. This plotline is followed up on in the DLC, where Chris tries to stop him from sending the data he collected to The Connections in order to replicate the E-Series and generate massive profit for himself. I will agree, though, that it is neat that the game foreshadows this even before the reveal.
It's not necessarily the first aid juice. I think it's implied that Ethan is slightly infected by Eveline as well and that helps him with all the injuries he receives (in combination with the juice)
When Lucas was a child he kidnapped and starved his school bully by locking him in his attic. You can read about it in his journal. Lucas is a born killer and maniac. It's safe to say that Jack was wrong about him.
Love the idea that Luke isn't murderous because of the mold, he's just Like That
@@weebalert2613 its Lucas, he is never once referred to as "Luke", and Lucas being a psychopath before the mold is made very clear in dairys.

Don't know if any of you noticed but after you meet Zoe and are well into half of the "madhouse" portion of the game, If you return to the hatch you used to escape Jack and, go under the house, Evie is SITTING THERE IN HER WHEELCHAIR. This scared the shit out of me because it was still at a point in the game where we don't know about "Grandma's" true nature......Such a damn good game
"Nice car Ethan!"
Haha, lol, one of the best lines in the game. My new favourite is from the Daughters DLC.
"Cleanliness is next to godliness Zoe, and your mother here is pretty fucking close to meeting him!"

Joe calling the molded "Molded Mothafucka"s is also amazing
Wait how could you not bring up the birthday room and Clancy? The birthday room was the most genius thing in this game and really shows Lucas' true colors.
I agree
Clancy's death REALLY got to me. Looking down & seeing your flesh melt off your bones is another fucking level of unsettling.
Fake Aztrosist I gotta try that next play through 🔫😂☕
@@ohgirlieplease that tape shook me so bad I had to put the game down for a week
Maybe Nick didn't want to spoil all the good stuff?
The amount of extensive detail in this game is so amazing. I forget the channel name but someone pulled back the camera to see how Ethan's model works in game, and holy shit the model does all the animations you see. When getting your leg chopped off, the model is actually being animated and you're not shown an in-game cutscene, it's happening in time in front of you. They didn't need to bother animating every single action, they could've just slapped an in-game cutscene and called it a day.
I agree and like your stance. The only point I want to add is that BECAUSE the game is also VR capable, it probably played a role in detouring them from making in-game cut scenes in scenarios like that.
I really love this new VR technology because I believe it will hold game designers/producers to a higher standard.
NewtNoot I believe it was SinglePlayerNacho, he's really good at showing the details.
my favorite part in this game was that first time you hear grandma humming and you pass her to the scorpion door, when you hear her him again I turned around to see if I could catch her humming and she was gone. it unnerved me majorly in a beautiful way.
Dear god when I was faced with Marguerite, I was terrified. I kept on doing little screams each time she appeared. The way she moved, and the way she just disappeared was just horrifying.

one day i will be blessed with the sweet release of death. until then, i’ll be with the mold.
whenever you choose to save Zoe they should add a cut scene showing how Mia woke up in the floor near the boat instead of cutting to the start of the level expecting players to know that you chose Mia first
All of this is spot on. I was expecting a jumpscare in that white van but none came which made me more on edge and seeing the black of the inside of the guest house was VERY unnerving and I loved every second of this game.
I'm really glad to see you looking at horror games too. I think there's a massive amount of potential for your unique sort of analysis.
Hey Nick, have you ever considered looking at Corpse Party?
he's done a few video games before
DaS Guardians this
Corpse party doesn't have that much to analyze for a whole video. It's pretty much like 'ah, everybody can die at every point'. And that's pretty much it.
Yeah but its the characters and lore that make it interesting, not the premise of everybody dying at any point, and even the premise has a twist.
Hotline Cat Try playing the PSP Corpse Party (not Book of Shadows) in the dead of the night, alone in your room with the lights off, with headphones on. The immersion is just bonkers good, and the way the game just suddenly throws you randomly from one piece of the narrative to another using its character separation makes you automatically wanna solve everything and connect the dots. And for pixelated horror, I think it did a good job conveying some of the brutal scenes, especially when it switches from the pixel art to straight-up gruesome portraits.
I kinda understand the 'everybody dies at any point in the game' simple view, but to me, it actually makes sense once you're halfway in after replaying it. These are students stuck in a place where death is the norm, and places like that mean that trying to survive is a lot worse, unless you're psychologically strong enough that you don't break. Unfortunately, high-school kids aren't.
I just realized, I'm pretty sure it's Ethan's car that's parked in the garage where you fight Jack.
The first Resident Evil is my favorite game of all time and I thought this game would just be an Outlast copy, but I feel like this game goes closer to the roots of the series, more so than the previous titles. Great video!
I'm so happy to see someone appreciating this game for how incredible it is, I hope it's doing well monetary wise, so we get more of things like it!
I really liked the first half of the game, but after that the scare factor dropped. However, that doesn't mean I thought it was bad.
Tragically Hipster Yeah. Sucks though.
the last half really does transition into a more survival esque game, especially when the lucas portion comes in; but the survival game is DAMN good as well.
Tragically Hipster I really liked the last half. Not scary doesn't mean bad like you said. It still got great atmosphere and fun survival gameplay , so it's still great
This comment section makes me feel refreshed, as people are having a calm discussion of this game.
just livke every resident evil game ever, thats why they are so great y, you get your fear factor, then you get to kick ass, its fantastic and done on purpose
you know what i love about this game? as far as we know, Lucas gets away. he goes to the mine and just disappears. also, Lucas in general is SUCH a well written character.
Night Mind talking about RE7 ? My life is now complete..
Wow, Night Mind plays this like a god-damn beautiful horror-movie. With the Let's Play's I watched it was more like, "OOH A MONSTER! HE MAKE ME FUNNY SCREAM!" I actually wouldn't mind seeing more Night Mind gaming footage. It's beautiful
Don't mind me, just liking this video because I already know it's gonna be great.
Snaphead 1 Same. 😀
I'M SO HAPPY YOU GOT THE LEG SCENE BY THE KITCHEN!!! I've had so many friends play it and they don't get to see it. I feel it's an almost crucial scene for understanding how that healing goop works so well.
Welcome back Nick, and also...
Welcome to the family, son!
Dam it jack
@@katzenspiele Hey you too here
I have experience with a family who lived in a house with mold that would constantly make them sick. My friend was a part of this family.
I also knew a family whose son was a problem child. The parents were family friends. The stepfather wanted to send the kid to military school. The mother kept refusing. Their kid almost drowned me when I was really young.
I really enjoy your breakdown. It’s actually pretty relatable to me.
The first time I encountered Grandma Baker in that hall where she was humming I was a little freaked, cause I thought she was going to do something. No way she was just in a tight space like that with a safe room near by and death wasn't close. I saved, loaded up and very carefully walked past her, nothing happened and I made my way to the Scorpion door. Then she started humming again and I paused at the door, I then went to look back around the corner.....and she was gone and the humming stopped. Me and the buddy I had watching me play this game both looked at each other in just complete silence. It was the first time in a long time either of us had been so freaked out and felt so ill prepared in a game. Fear like that has to be earned and not just thrown in your face with a music sting, little things like that are why I now consider RE7 one of the most well crafted horror games.
I love your Channel!
GloomyHouse oh shit it's papa gloomy!
Can I come in
at 42:55, the diary says that mom bought him a 259-piece puzzle. This presents an interesting problem, as 259 is a prime number and would not easily be able to be made into a puzzle, given their generally rectangular shape.
I haven't finished the review yet, but does the number 259 pop up anywhere else in the game? How about the puzzle itself?
One of the mysteries on the estate for sure. It's not known whether or not that has any significance yet.
collintmay Has anyone put that code into the trap that Lucas sets up?
+collintmay 259 is NOT a prime number because it's divisible by 7.
257 and 263 are prime numbers though.
Oh shit, you're right. It divides 7 and 13. Interesting numbers, given
the connotations behind the two, esp in the context of this game, but
not inherently meaningful. That was dumb.
collintmay No worries :) Don't be embarrassed, I've made many oversights in my life, especially with math.
That would've been cool if it WAS prime though, because your puzzle piece theory would've been perplexing indeed. :)
I'm only familiar through watching other people play, but my favorites thing about RE7 is the way the VHS bits show you exactly what's coming and how awful it's going to be, and then the game is like, "well? Are you ready to experience that with the full knowledge of what's coming?"
Damn, Nick, got the gamma settings low enough? You can't even see the chain and lock on the gate in broad daylight!
Kurt Yarish he wants *full immersion*
I was literally gonna comment about that!
I can't see shit
In VR this was one of the best gaming experiences ive ever had! Simply perfect! The attention to detail was beyond awesome and im glad i wasnt the only one who noticed it :)
Another clue about Grandma Baker’s true identity lies in Jack’s monologue to Ethan while he’s in the mold.
He mentions himself, Marguerite, Lucas, and even Zoe, and says that they aren’t killers. He never mentions Grandma. Matter of fact, Im fairly certain no one actually acknowledges the old lady at all.
I, too, am excited for Outlast 2.
Matt Cummins RE7 set a high bar this year, and I felt that the demo for Outlast 2 was a bit jump scary, but who knows, maybe it'll be great
Dr Strangelove What I got from playing RE7 is just a combination of Outlast, jump scares, & House of a Thousand Corpses.
That & beat it in over an hour made for a very unfulfilled experience.
Rudofaux to be fair I got the "high bar" from another comment.
As for the Jumpscares, I felt that they weren't so many and when they did happen they let the felling sink in, and I feel that the Jumpscares have some real effort put in. As for you beating it in an hour, fuck, I beat it in 8, you're fast as fuck. And I don't want to make a shitty assumption but I feel like it fits here, I'm guessing you feel unfulfilled by REmake which can be beaten in 2 hours, which also had some Jumpscares.
Then again, it's my opinion on this game that people can disagree completely or agree completely or be in the middle on.
Also, awesome profile picture
Dr Strangelove Belive me I wasn't even trying to do a speed run. It was in my first play through. I just applied what I learned in Outlast, ability to kill things, the ol' RE "zombies" can't open doors, clearly predictable boss patterns...
...over an hour & then I'm like "So NOW Umbrella shows their face"
Rudofaux damn, what difficulty were you on? If you were on madhouse then damn you're good
As someone with severe Arachnophobia I wanted to personally thank you for warning about the spider mutant before it showed. It's more than most do and even if you weren't thinking about people like me when you said it, I'm still very grateful to have avoided that panic attack
I know this is a bit old, but serious shout out to the voice actors for capturing the Creole accent without sounding horrible.
I'm so happy it was good, this is a great thing for horror games and media in general. I'm still a bit bummed about silent hills getting canceled though. :(
Damn you, nightmind!! I saw a new video, got SUPER excited and went to go check it out, watch the first 16-ish minutes and then you start talking about how i should play it for myself and how awesome of a horror experience it is...
Now I have to go buy an entire video game AND a console, AND I don't get to watch the rest of the video yet, just 'cuz I trust you so much and because it sounds like a cool game I would really enjoy. You're a monster, Nick Nocturne. I was so ready to just ignore the spoiler warning but then I was like "ughhhh but it sounds so good and........ I can't just let Nick down!!" And now i have to be, like, a good person n' stuff and have things I enjoy >:| Damn you and your good influence!
(I'm kidding, obvs, this game sounds AWESOME and I can't wait 'til I'm able to pick it up. I'll be waiting to watch the rest of your review with baited breath until then! :] )
R u ok
You ever play it?
Just finished this game in preparation for RE 8. GOD IT WAS SO GOOD. I've never been so fixated on horror like this since FNAF (weird connection but hush). It was beautiful and terrifying the more I went through it. Absolutely a masterpiece, and I'm hooked on the series now.
Everything about this video was made with passion, you can tell. The script, the production and the atmosphere. It's just so fucking sad that this channel doesn't get as much attention as it deserves. It's so damn good.
Dude, you actually played through the game with that brightness level and exactly the way I played it for the first time when I broke and couldn't even finish the basement segment. Walking slowly and carefully, listening to everything. I was literally too scared and nervous to p[lay like that.
For my second try 3 YEARS LATER, I decided to stream the game. It was kind of a coping mechanism. Even though nobody watched the stream, I talked to myself, joked about the events when possible, and pushed through not giving myself time to become paranoid. That way I actually managed to beat the game and boy, what an experience.
I'm just glad that I finally got to play a horror game that actually gave me a weapon. I hate run and hide horror games, they feel so lazy.
Also, the game kind of loses the scare factor once you realize how the game works. It happened to me on my first playthrough and I started to realize when and where I was safe.
thank you for all your hard work Nick :3
I played this game like a couple of months ago and seeing this video made me remember how much of a masterpiece this game was. I'm extremely tempted to go play it again and just re-experience the horror. Absolute masterpiece of a game and also a beautiful video, Mr. Night Mind
There’s 3 movies this game takes from the most: evil dead, Texas chainsaw massacre and saw
in the first jack encounter,i legit just sat down in the room corner and just sat there cuz i was so fucking scared, and then when jack eventually found me i just closed the game, and that was what happened for about 2 weeks.
Love you, Resident Evil, and I love this video. Great work. RE7 makes me feel a lot better about Silent Hills never seeing the light of day. Still stings, but at least I can look forward to this franchise going in the right direction. I bet Konami is shitting themselves realizing that they could have been competing with this game with what was going to be, as I feel, quite a contender for a Capcom.
Sorry to hear you been having a rough time. I too have had some issues I've been trying to get through. Here's to overcoming or resolving our obstacles in the most efficient, effective, and healthiest ways possible. Again, love you man, and I look forward to your next video. :-)

Of course, but it might not be that clear for people who are just playing the game for fun, and not understand how subtle the scares are.

For a few months now, I've been thinking about the analysis of RE7 where the narrator was talking about how there are symbols all over the game such as the chair in the kitchen and the doll on top of it signifying Eveline wanting a family and growing mold in the house being Lucas. I really wanted to watch it again because it was that good but couldn't find the video although I searched for every possible title and thought the video was deleted. Now, I find it again🎉 Such a great video, thank you! 😊
