How I would describe the blast beat...it's a doubled up thrash beat/hardcore beat (back and forth on the kicks and snares really fast). Take a kick-snare-kick-snare half-step beat, then double it thanks to the double-sized kit most metal drummers play today. So now you have that kick-snare pattern being played so fast that the individual strikes can't be heard. The whole thing blurs together into this strobing effect. Punctuate with some hasty rolls at the end of each measure. Boom, blast beat!
