  • Battlefield 5, a game that never really managed to get of the ground has been dropped by the developer, proving once again that Games as a Service is a bad joke. EA decided to cut the losses and start with a new game.

"She plays Fortnite. I can be a girl in Fortnite, why are people so upset about it?" Dear Patrick, tell your daughter, who obviously didn't pay attention in History class, that millions of people died during WW2, and making a WW2 game while rewriting history is incredibly rude and insensitive. Fortnite is a fantasy game not based on any historical event, so you can be whatever you want and nobody cares. It's simply not the same thing with a historical game like BFV.
If Dice wanted to be all inclusive and have women in their Battlefield game, they could have done either one of two things : make a new modern Battlefield game. Nobody would have said a thing about women in a modern BF game. There are women serving in the majority of western military forces nowadays so it's completely fine. Or if they really wanted to make a WW2 game, they could have included women the right way, with Russian female snipers, or French female resistance fighters, but certainly not a British female frontline fighter (they were never a thing, period) with a prosthetic arm and face paint straight outta Braveheart.

It's not a live service but Warfare 1944 and its free sister game Operation Harsh Doorstop being developed by drakeling labs is doing almost exactly what you are talking about on the unreal engine. Basically they are building a framework that allows communities to continue to evolve the base game via mods to their hearts content.
They are basically remaking BF1942 on unreal along with:
      64 to 128 player servers
      environmental destruction
      full integrated mod support
And it's all funded primarily via patreon plus the 10 or 15 USD to buy a key for warfare 1944 via steam while operation harsh doorstop is a free game built on the same foundations as warfare 1944 as it's meant to be a kind of demo total conversion mod for communities to use as a template for their own projects.

This game was based on a very solid franchise, bringing numerous gameplay improvements over the previous opus of the franchise all while being in a very demanded and rich setting. They had everything to win, how did they mess up so badly? I was so much hyped when they announced a WWII Battlefield. I have played a lot of BF1942, BF2, BF3. I have also bought and played BF4 and BF1. I was a very big fan of the Battlefield franchise but they managed to kill this franchise in my heart. So much wasted potential and every minute of watching this terminally ill game suffer was a pain.

“Okay so in order to get funding, you need to have a Battle Royal mode and a Rainbow Six style mode so we can appeal to stock-holders. I’m sure you guys can develop what’s essentially three games at once and have it ready for launch and not have to put in a ton of Battlefield one assets to make up for a critical lack of content. Now it’s release time, so instead of promoting your game as the “Historical-Fiction shooter based in ww2” like how Battlefield 1 became with its experimental/rare weapons, gadgets and uniforms that made it more fun while still retaining that authentic feel, have a bunch of PR people with absolutely no connection to the game or it’s success say it’s actually “what history should be”. Once we launch, we’ll be sure to move them so now your only PR are your fellow Swedish developers who have extremely limited understanding of its mostly American fan base. Oh, and halfway in when your sales start to dip, cancel that long planned and well rooted Mediterranean expansion for a quickly cobbled together Pacific one because it’s more identifiable. Have fun!!

GaaS is _not_ inherently bad for video games. Forza Horizon 4 is the perfect counter-example for anyone claiming it to be: As part of their GaaS roadmap and besides the usual paid car packs and two expansion packs, we got:
    - A whole fuckton of new cars (including a set of cars from Mitsubishi and Toyota, who were not present when the game was launched)
    - Some further single-player content in the form of Horizon Stories
    - Some further single-player content _that also generates a passive income_ in the form of Horizon Businesses
    - So-called "Showcase Remixes" combining some of the races against special opponents with a new car and time of day/season
    - Forza Horizon's own BR mode in the form of "the Eliminator" (it works a lot better than most Shooter-BRs)
    - Regulations on the "competitive" side of Forza Horizon (as "competitve" as CSGO's matchmaking, to put that into perspective), esp. by banning some of the OP "fantasy"/exotic cars (Hot WHeel Boneshaker, TopGear's TrackTor)
    - Updates to online races in general (getting slowed down when wallriding, auto-ghosting if someone tries to ram in your back when you are braking, etc)
Also, we got the promised route creator about three months after the game was released and just recently celebrated the return of Horizon Promo (photograph each car in the game to earn a cash bonus) from older games.
So... No, GaaS is not inherently bad. It is, however, an excuse for "the higher-ups", "the suits", "the Irgendwas-mit-BWL guys" to force the release of a game and then make the developers work overtime in order to fix the mess.

Many ex-BFV's are going back to BFI because it feels more realistic on how horrific and gruesome the "Great War to End all Wars" (which, ironicly, *cough* WWII, Treaty of Versailles *cough* backfired) was on how much luck and skill there was in this war on how close the different ending were. The soldiers already knew before WWII even started how deadly and catastrophical will end but before WWI... Nobody didn't.
The players in BFI are playing there as is was they Decisions on how to approach the objective would might have routed WWI!

A very healthy and well liked stream of content followed for months. The loot box fiasco was an incredibly weak start, but I'd say Battlefront 2 had the biggest turn around in a game I've ever seen. With all the content it has now at the end of its service, it can def be considered complete.

I love battlefield, ever since I played Bad Company 2, which to this day is still one of my favorite multiplayer games of all time. I would’ve bought BFV, despite their inclusion of unrealistic characters in a franchise that has prided itself in its authenticity, specially since BF1 was such a success and it gave spotlights to the unknown war stories of the First World War. That’s not the thing that made me not want to buy it, it was their response to the criticism. They have overestimated their fame, thinking that their fans are gonna buy the game regardless of all the controversy and saying “if you don’t like it, don’t buy it” statement. A person’s money is already compromised with many other things in that person’s life. You tell someone to spend their money somewhere else, and they will. I’m sure that around the time BFV was released, these potential customers had also separated money to buy another game they wanted. The moment they said “don’t like? Dont buy”, they lost the money these potential customers were going to spend on BFV, the mentality being “well, now I can spend money on a game I actually was checking out.”
