    For many decades, Tolkien's fantasy epic was considered "unfilmable". It was simply too grand-scale, too complicated, too dense to put to film. And yet, now that Peter Jackson did it, it feels like it's a film series that will never be out of date. Every frame of it is still a gorgeous painting.

    • @marks2807
      @marks2807 Před 2 lety +43

      The sad thing is that Peter Jackson made these master class films yet the Tolkien story that should have been super easy to make was turned into an almost unwatchable mess of a trilogy. They really should have made the Hobbit one movie then they could have done the story without adding a bunch of side plots.

    • @monkeymox2544
      @monkeymox2544 Před 2 lety +20

      @@marks2807 imo the problem with The Hobbit wasn't that they made it into three films - I respect the intention behind it, showing us all the things in the background that are relevant to LOTR - the problem was that it was tonally confused. The Hobbit is a children's book. LOTR, and Jackson's adaptation, is a more mature epic fantasy. You can't just slap The Hobbit into Jackson's cinematic universe and call it a day, because you end up with grand epic narratives contrasting with scenes of dwarves lobbing plates around and singing a weirdly synchronised impromptu song about it.
      They should have either made The Hobbit as written, but not set in Jackson's universe, or completely adapted it to suit the tone of the original trilogy. Canonically, The Hobbit as written is Bilbo's retelling of real events, so my head-canon has always been that the real journey was much darker, but Bilbo made it more whimsical. You could argue that in the film they do use Bilbo's retelling as a framing device, so one could interpret the film in this way anyway, but we're always jumping into events that Bilbo knows nothing about so that wouldn't make much sense.

    • @eliteteamkiller319
      @eliteteamkiller319 Před 2 lety +2

      @@newaccount6414 LOL! Sorry, I thought you knew. Well, elves are kind of like creatures who have a foot in the supernatural realm, for lack of a better analogy, and as a result, they have certain physics-defying, uncanny abilities. More precisely, they have a special relationship with nature, and the laws of nature, which allow them to have such a light step that they never get tired running, or they don't sink into snow, or other things. You won't see a human be better at archery than an elf archer, and it goes beyond simply having better eyesight and living longer. If you watch the second movie, the hobbits use elvish rope, which seems to magically untie itself with a simple pull. So the elves designed a rope that "knows" when you need a knot to untie.
      So in the case of Legolas here, the "uncanny ability" on display was that the rules of gravity which applied to everyone else did not apply to him to the same degree, as if by virtue of being an elf, he was imply too superior to be inconvenienced by mere snow.
      So it's not that he's super light in weight. It's that what _we_ consider to be the laws of nature are to a small degree subservient to elves, and despite his actual weight, he can control how light his step is in full defiance of his weight and the laws of gravity that mere mortals are subject to.

    Fun fact: the Ringwraiths are invisible because the power of the One Ring (and their own subsidiary rings) stretched their lives out so long and so thin over thousands of years in service to Sauron that their once-human forms have completely faded away. They can still hold swords, etc, and interact with the physical world, but are now more or less indistinguishable from life or death. They are only visible when Frodo puts on the ring and reenters ringworld.

    50:57 you probably know that already, but that knife deflection bit was 100% real. The behind-the-scenes stuff show that the actor was supposed to throw it away from Aragorn's face and they would use some camera angle trickery to make it seem like it would hit, but the actor accidentally threw it directly at Aragorn, so he actually deflected it for real (he had some sword training for this movie, but even then it's crazy that it happened)

    There’s just nothing in the world like there’s goddamn movies. They’re so incredible and it makes me happy to see people who didn’t grow up with them as a mainstay show this kinda love to them. Mad respect

    Listen bro, these movies have been a big part of my life since I watched them as a teenager at the movies 20 years ago. And I really, truly enjoyed watching you experience this movie for the first time! You payed attention to the story and the emotions of the charakters and you are picking up on subtle themes and details many other reactors never talk about. So don't worry if you don't remember names or whatever. Just enjoy the ride!

    Leo this the best LotR reaction on CZcams man. No question. I can’t imagine editing 4 hours into 1 but you killed it. I know if might be a minute before the next video but I can’t wait. Amazing job

    I love your empathy for the characters. I read the book. But never really felt their chill or heat the way your empathy brings out how painfully cold or hot these guys had to be during their quest. Thank you!

    "I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve"
    That's one of the most intelligent burns in movies.
