  • In this Virtual Demo Room video we put Gainlab Audio's Dictator dual-pentode valve compressor through its paces.
Based on a variable gain design found in vintage 1950’s compressors including the venerable Fairchild 670 and Gates STA-Level, Dictator offers additional features for the modern engineer including side-chain filtering and a stereo link option. “HiComp and “LoComp” modes provide different ratio and knee profiles for a wide range of compression flavours with a refined, punchy character.
No talking, just audio… so you can make up your own mind.

Right, first off, I have no skin in the game other than being frustrated at my own inability to polish audio sources to sound like vinyl from the end times of analog.
This unit isn’t just about the compression settings. It just seems to do something remarkable to every synth I put through it. Horrible harsh Sequential presets become absolutely beautiful. The bad bits disappear and the good bits come to the fore. I am excited because my never ending GAS has been murdered. I am finally loving the instruments I already own. As a fix to being dissatisfied, this is really affordable.

I would love to see a demo using electronic music with a lot of fast transients like house or techno.

Very nice demo as always! I have a question please: I'm hesitating between this one and the Dual mono Dictator it can handle also mono tracks. Are they doing the same job for mastering? Thanks!

must be something wrong with my hearing, I don't notice any difference at all in this demo.. not worth mentioning and not worth spending €1500

Believe me, as a new owner of a Gainlab Dictator, no plug-in does this. I am hugely in favour of ITB. It is much easier to produce this way but if you can reproduce what this hardware unit adds to sounds, without any user effort, then you deserve the sales. I am a synthesist musician and have a love/hate relationship with every synth I own. Every synth patch or preset doesn’t sound quite right. Bought the Dictator and everything sounds brilliant. It isn’t the compressor settings, they are pretty irrelevant. It just makes everything bloom.
