Everyone knows that for fish farming the pH of the water in pond should be maintained, even if it's a small or big pond. But such pH variations often make fish farmers skeptical. The pH value of the water in the fish pond should be carefully monitored by each farmer on a regular basis. pH is the level of acidity or alkalinity in water. This is a factor that affects the health of the fishes growing in the Fish pond. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. Numbers below seven indicate high acidity. Similarly numbers above seven indicate high alkalinity. Similarly, the number seven indicates a neutral state.
The pH of the water in a fish pond should be maintained between seven and eight. If the pH value is not at the optimum level it will affect the growth and survival of the fish. However, small changes in pH value may not have any immediate effect on the fishes. For example, assuming that the pH value drops to 6.5 or above 8.5, nothing is likely to happen to the fish immediately. However, regular pH testing should be done to make sure that there are no major changes in pH levels.
The pH of the pool water naturally decreases and rises throughout the day and night due to changes in the amount of carbon dioxide caused by the process of photosynthesis. In the absence of sunlight, since photosynthesis doesn’t take occurs the pH of the water decreases at night. Similarly, the pH of the water rises in the afternoon after photosynthesis for a certain period in daytime. Always consider these daily natural fluctuations in the water before attempting to adjust the pH.
A pH meter or pH solution can be used to test the pH of the water in the fishpond. We use the pH solution of a company called Nice in our farm. How to test for pH will be based on the instructions provided by the company whose pH solution is used. You can watch the video by clicking on the link above to learn how to test the pH of water.
If you intend to test the water in a large natural pond, you will need to collect samples from different parts of the pond for the test. Or if it is a small pond, just take some water from it.
If the pH value is higher or lower than normal at the time of water testing, the fish pond can be filled with fresh water by removing about 20% of the waste from the bottom. After changing the water in this way, the pH of the water should be tested again to confirm the value.
Now let's see what can be done if the pH value of the water is below seven or should be raised to seven.
1. Calcium oxide
2. Dolomite or calcium magnesium carbonate.
If the pH value is high, let us see how to reduce it. If the pH of the water is high, it means that the alkalinity of the water is high. This can be reduced by using a variety of acids.

The pH of the water can be kept unchanged to some extent by reducing the amount of direct sunlight entering the pond. Fish farmers should try to make it a habit to test the pH of the water in the pond. Fish are more likely to die due to changes in the pH of the water.
