- How much air do you actually need to play the trumpet?
A good question. But how can you find out how much air is really needed?
We start with a played g1 in mezzoforte on the trumpet. However, we need control and so we pull our instrument from our instrument while playing. After removing the instrument, the air continues to flow and in a further step we also remove the mouthpiece from our lips. Now we notice that soft and loose air flows outwards. The important thing here is that we notice that the air is not forced or flowing fast. Conversely, this means for us that it is not the air speed but the frequency of the lips that is decisive for our pitch change.
If I now play chromatically from g1 down to f# and back again or from g1 up to c3 and back again, the sound and the timbre should remain the same. Ideally, this is so and we can start playing our literature and exercises in this way or transfer this technique to our trumpet playing.
If we can implement that, we can also improve our game in the points:
endurance
timbre and
increase height.
Try to transfer this technique into your daily playing, you will notice that you get better on the trumpet! 👍
I hope I was able to help you with my thoughts, exercises, tips and tricks on this important trumpet topic/video. Here's to a good cooperation and always remember: Stay tuned is the motto!
See you soon and Ciao!!! Your Nico 🎺
