  • The extensive docks railway in Birkenhead by the late 1980s had slimmed down considerably from what it once was. Despite this, some railway remained adjacent to Duke Street and along Corporation Road towards Birkenhead North. On this day in 1989 several trains are seen arriving and departing alongside the various shunt maneouvers provided by one of the resident 03 shunt engines from Birkenhead Depot.

Used to wander down there in about 1983 when I was a student living in Oxton.
Visited Mollington St depot regularly as well.

Canning Street North box is still there today albeit burned out and derelict in the undergrowth.

Excellent footage. I presume this was filmed just before the 03s were withdrawn

What a fantastic collection of videos on your channel. So many memories. The sights and sounds of a lost railway, the days when there was interest and variety to be seen on the network. The video quality is also very good, you must have been using a very expensive camera in the 1980's. Thank you!

In the video you can see br class 31 loco 31 125. Its pre top number was D5543. She was built in 1959 by brush traction and withdrawn in 1994. She was scrapped 7 years later at Harry Needle railroad company.

There were still two 03s on the Isle of Wight when the Birkenhead 03s were withdrawn in May 1989

History in the making at the time. How much is left now one wonders ? Some good modellers shots there, including dodgy tracks, lol 🤣 Great video, thanks 👍👍

Nothing but trees down there now- line is permanently severed at the level crossing, the footbridge is gone. The track is buried under overgrowth and in very poor condition, severed in places, too- very sad indeed!
