- By law, hospitals are required to put their prices online. But many aren't fully complying, and it's costing people money. CBS News consumer investigative correspondent Anna Werner has more on these "hidden costs."

If it is the law, and they are breaking that law, then why aren't they being charged with a crime?
Rules for thee but not for me
Maybe it's unenforceable across the board. Just like not every driver that commits a traffic violation gets a ticket, it's probably difficult to go after every hospital that doesn't comply.
Because they are not named "Trump."
@@Calle5taat least in that case go after SOME but NONE is unacceptable
@@stevetaxpayer6664 stick to the subject
Even with insurance, they will make every effort to find an excuse to deny coverage. It's a total scam.
i just finished a course on the healthcare reimbursement system in the US and it's mindblowing how scammy it is. There were easily 5 chapters in the book warning me about insurance frauds because that's all they ever do! Fraud, fraud, abuse, and the US systems sad attempts to stop it.
Insurance companies are supposed to deny coverage. if they paid like they’re supposed to they don’t profit.
There is even a horror movie based on that.
As a business that provides a service, it’s just corrupt that they are not held to the same standards as a normal business.
My experience now days is that most businesses hide their prices. I think it’s to hide inflation. Or in the case of Walmart the employees are lazy.
The entire hospital/insurance price war is what caused this mess. Real cost are so much lower. You can’t tell me a MRI that’s 5 yr old, has performed 10,000’s of test still costs 5500.00 per scan. It’s all BS to the MAX
I have to do self pay for MRI since my insurance sucks. It’s $425
$5500? Lmao. That’d be a steal in my area
@@Brad14397 I stand corrected …they billed 8500 for one I had to get last week. Looked at the bill this am. The insanity of it all.

@@dontforgettostretch2you sound like a conformist. Either that or you somehow benefit from all this. Healthcare is free in Europe. You heard? Free. No reason it’s like this in the US.
Remember it’s the hospital CEOs and executives doing this. Don’t take it out on the frontline workers.
@mrniceguy500 remember the hospital CEO has the highest salary. That salary has to be funded somehow….😮
They should lose their not for profit status until they comply. I bet that’ll make them advertise their pricing real quick…

The American medical system is not broken. It is operating *precisely* as designed.
The fact that hospitals and doctors charge more for people using insurance is one of the many. many things wrong with American healthcare.
If you saw what Revenue Cycle Managers make and the teams of coders and billers they employ to get money from insurers, you would see why they charge less for cash.
My son just went to the ER via an ambulance. He ended up getting an IV and released. The ambulance ride that was a mile away is $2,500. I was also charged $1,300 for an hour in the ER and IV.
I am so sorry. That is terrible!
That’s under $100 in Asia 😂
Do not pay. If you drag this out either they will drop it or offer you significant discount
my kid wasnt even transported and it was $250. no ride, no lights, no treatment. $250.
Just don’t pay it. If you are retired and are not going to finance anything, then your credit score does not matter.
Only advisable if you already own the home u plan on livin in outright for the rest of your life. *this is not official financial advice.
@@hunterxcraft8328 I have never paid my coinsurance. My credit score takes a 15 point hit then recovers. I have never paid my co-insurance but that's because there are so many practices in the city I live in. not advisable if you are in a rural area where the same doctor treats everyone.
Is anybody surprised by this? I think not.
Only Americans aren't surprised by this. Only the rest of the world is. Why do you guys hate yourselves??
Get an itemized bill. Look at every single thing you are being charged and challenge everything that is egregious.
Imagine the US providing healthcare for everyone through tax instead of stuff like this.
They need to fund more wars so that companies like boeing continue to make billions from taxpayers pockets every year
Our hospital pays like $1 for a bag of Normal Saline and charges $100 for the bag PLUS a cost for the nurse to administer it lol! A scam.
That’s disgusting and so messed up. Wow.
After my sister had her 1st baby we were looking at her itemized bill...she was being charged $16 per Tylenol pill and $25 per colace pill. So for her 3 day stay she was charged hundreds for Tylenol and stool softener. Just gross...
CT scan is only worth a few hundred dollars. CT patient volume is so high and they will use that same machine for 15 years or more. They pay a technologist around $40 an hour and the contrast and syringe isn’t expensive at all maybe around $20.
Usually a hospitals CT scanner is always broken because its ran 24/7.
How can the prices fluctuate like that? Is this hospital owned by Wendys?
At least we know "Where's the Beef?" It's with these ridiculous hospital bills.
😂😂😂 hilarious
$54 for a pregnancy test is insane! Hospitals should not be allowed to charge different prices for services. The prices should be the same across the board and reasonable.
Well that same pregnancy test cost $1 at the dollar store!!!! Stop clogging the damn er because you want a pregnancy test!
alot of times your made to take one even if you know 100% your NOT pregnant because of similar symptoms @@nlb8419 a CYA thing hospitals will do + for more money too
@@nlb8419Pregnancy tests are a common test done before any number of treatments can be done. It's a pretty normal to have it done along with a variety of other blood tests when you're trying to figure out what's making someone sick. Maybe don't judge others when you don't know their circumstances or the normal procedures in a hospital.
a pregnancy test can be used men to discover if they have prostate issue, but yeah i agree pricing is stupid for that just to pee on a strip and be told by a doctor the same thing that u can see.
It's not just the price issue, but also hospital bills are so complicated and incomprehensible.
By design....
They contract different prices for each insurance company .
Judges should render bills null and void if hospitals aren’t following the rules.
Agreed
Unless the hospitals and insurance companies be held account and penalize, there would be no change and the policy is ineffective. When you are in pain, you are not thinking of anything else.
I just don't pay it. Put it on my credit. It will never get paid trust me. And if i get sick again you still have to treat me
I'm always afraid of getting sick or hurt travelling out of network. My deductible goes from $3900 to $11,000 if i'm out of network.
Good lord if they’re going to price gouge to hell at least they could tell us what the actual prices will be.
most of the time they dont even know. It's a ridiculously long formula that takes into account the geographic cost of living where the hospital is. All it takes is one greedy person to start adding more numbers than necessary.
As a millennial I can confidently say, the American Healthcare system has failed us. The lack of transparency and fear of these extreme costs stops many of us Americans from even getting checkups for fear of further complications. Anything beyond a normal visit could financially cripple and devastate us for the rest of our lives. We have to even uber to a hospital since an ambulance is over a thousand dollars for a 5 minute ride
Remember everyone -- "greatest country on earth." And the only country that makes it's people deal with stuff like this.
The CMS report reveals 30% of hospitals are non-compliant with the rule. That's significant
Hospitals will have surge pricing next.
This is why we should have social medicine in the United States.

If politicians corporations and states don't have obey the law or the courts than why should we ?
The reason why it is charged so much is because insurance is supposed to pay the $16,000 and cash is for upfront which is much less than what they would charge insurance. But the insurance just pass the cost to patient.
I wouldn’t pay it!
Oh, they are supposed to follow the law? I thought they were optional for billion-dollar businesses.
Rules like this must be enforced and have medical providers responsible and accountable to be fair in their pricing. Medical care has unfortunately become a for-profit business.
I wonder if she can sue
Medical care in this country is so high that people are choosing to die before going to the doctor. Ridiculous!
Travel medical insurance is an absolute total joke. If you ever make a claim they will pick apart your medical history/application & find something that you forgot to include & not pay for any of it. Don't waste your money.
The IMG will do reinbursement if she had a Surgical Procedure after CT scan. The travel insurance are only covering emergency services.
Lol sorry but I laughed a little when the lady was surprised that the CT scan was $11k. But maybe there are still people who don't know how outrageously expensive US Healthcare is....?
I've been charged $400 for a urine dipstick test that I can purchase on my own at CVS for $30 for a box of 10 strips.
You don’t need to pay hospitals for medical care. That’s the one instance where companies can’t ruin your credit.
They can still sue you.
@@MattSezer For quarters? Or my pocket lint?
They just sell the debt to a collection agency which will ruin it
This should never happen to anyone ever, it can happen to anyone. I had a medical emergency and went to the emergency room with good insurance. The insurance company ended up claiming there was no medical necessity even though I was literally choking to death. I received a bill of $16K, and eventually the hospital negotiated with the insurance company and brought it down to $1,500. However, this was 6 months after the event while I'm sitting around trying to appeal their decision worried that I was on the hook. I am a Republican, but when it comes to health insurance the free market has failed miserably. This is one issue I believe should be socialized even at the cost of increased taxes.
Same, healthcare reform is one of the few things I’d vote democrat on.
Class action lawsuit
the entire medical care system in the US needs to be torn apart and started over from scratch.. This system doesnt work for anyone anymore.
fight the bill if the hospital pull a stunt. second thing to do is to never go there again.
I never paid a hospital bill in my life… those go straight in the trash and my credit score still 800
On god They gon have to get it back in blood 😂
The place where they are pretty much guaranteed to price gouge and get away with it is pretty much the healthcare system
It’s not compliant with the Hospital’s stated Mission
Here in the U.S., everyone's paying for health insurance and yet they also don't want to see a doctor or go to a hospital even if they feel like they're dying because they're afraid they'll go bankrupt simply from the visit. Meanwhile, in other countries, people have no problems going to visit a doctor for a minor cut or cold because they're free or a small charge.
Yup, U.S. healthcare is broken no matter what the pharmaceutical and medical community are saying.
I’m sorry this happened to this lady. Sadly it happens to thousands of people every day. Our laws need to be changed and more specific. There needs to be real transparency and accountability. Yes, hospitals typically offer a cash price for you to pay at the time of service but you typically don’t know what that price will be until you are billed. You can ask to make arrangements to be billed and make a payment plan which in some hospitals is at least half of what the typically charged price is. Ask when you go in and keep detailed records. Ask in writing while you’re there to be put into your records or if someone is working from the finance office maybe you can speak with them. Sadly, if it’s an ER visit, you typically don’t feel well enough to do all of this especially if you think your insurance will cover it. The bill can be negotiated. Do it all in writing. Also, the 2 biggest companies for lab tests have a cash price list also- not for labs done at the hospital but if you go to one of their blood draw facilities, you can get lab tests with a Dr’s order for at least 50% off if it’s paid in cash and up front.
That's why I believe that my body is its own doctor. If I'm that afraid to die, then I don't want to be living.
Set up a payment plan...$50 a month. Take it or leave it.
The health care industry is $4.5 trillion.
If the health care system was its own country it would be the 3rd largest economy in the world!
Its dynamic pricing
The cost of living keeps rising every year. It's getting harder to keep up.
Not according to the president. Things have never been better.
Just need a new law, if the price isn't online, it's free.
As a floor nurse, I, for a fact, mess with the pricing and billing. (Satire)
only medicare insurance is required to disclose an advanced beneficiary notice of non coverage, sadly it's not required for commercial insurances. the patient should have been notified of insurance not covering. She can potentially appeal the claim if she is still a US resident. Pricing is not widely available because in the states we operate under a prospective payment system so the patient is seeking care from the hospital for pps. If anything she can give the hospital a bad rating and give a complaint. Most hospitals have incentive based care. If the management and patient care quality is subpar they can easily go under.
Yeah she’s commercial insurance and didn’t read her evidence of coverage. Of course the uneducated complain
They got to pay these administrators some how.
Replace administrators with CEO's and then you're correct
Is it just hospitals? I get constant bills from urgent care and other practices without notice
Ugh!
Obamacare helps pay for military spending. The USA Goverment loves healthcare price gouging.
And they wonder why no one trust the healthcare industry

Time of Hours spent in Hospital 🏥 Medicare and the consultation fees are to be reviewed.
Yah it all sucks. But if $16,000 breaks you. You best not be traveling. Stay in Ecuador. Go home and let the collection agency find you. If you are an ex pat. Why aren't you enrolled the Medicare as a backup??? I had two cat scans in 2020. $3500 list price apiece. Insurance got a 70% discount an payed $1100. Such is life.
48 😳... Is the patient in a coma?
Insurance and healthcare should be affordable whether they are for profit or non-profit. Healthcare is a right, not a privilege.
Top-of-the line scammers.
Why are we still complaining in 2024!?!
You know if we pushed for free healthcare we wouldn’t have to shop for healthcare like were trying to find a deal at a grocery store. We pay more for worse care than any other first world country all while they have universal healthcare. I would rather pay a bit more in taxes than be stuck with tens of thousands of dollars in health care debt. We need to realize that these companies cannot hold themselves accountable because almost every time they will refuse to do the right thing. There needs to be steep penalties for medical facilities who aren’t compliant. At the billion dollar company that I work at, our health insurance is expensive to the point where it’s over 500 dollars a month for 2 people all while giving you terrible coverages. No where in the United States should needing medical care bankrupt you or be the reason that you die. Unfortunately it does seem that having great health insurance or money can be the reason you live or die.
In other news, water is wet.
In america everything is a business even if your life depends on it.
This country worships the dollar like it’s a god
A one insurer would help fix price transparency issues
Sad day in America when all the news can tell you to help in the case of an actual medical emergency is "Good luck." These CEOs are criminals. When are they going to be held accountable?

I’ll agree with that. Over a 2 year period, I went from taking no prescribed drugs to 7. I will continue to do what the doctor tells me to take, at least until the immunotherapy sessions are over in September. What I haven’t told the Doctors is that I plan to move to Thailand in 2.5 years, after my son graduates from high school. After that, I will be up to Thai doctors to keep me alive at a reasonable price. If that means I have 6 months of retirement there, so be it
Go to your congressional member every single time. They hate hospitals.
Imagine how many people will die because the decision to seek medical care in an emergency is going to be influenced by knowing the cost ahead of time!!! Yes this is evil and things should not be this way, but being able to looked up prices ahead of time is not the answer!

Eh, I have a relative who works as an insurance specialist in a large health center. I've lost count of all the times she's told us about how an insurance company basically denied coverage that the policy provided. I've even had a procedure pre-approved (both verbally to me by a rep and documentation sent to the dr office), but then later received a claim denial letter after the procedure was done. Insurance rep couldn't tell me anything. The dr office pulled up the pre-approval. It was confusing as hell. Eventually I got a partial payment and the dr office cut me a break. But the dr office basically said they see it all the time now. They're even seeing small print at the bottom of pre-approvals that say something along the lines of, "Pre-approval does not constitute approval. Claims may be denied for cause at any time." You can be proactive and educated about your policy and still get hosed.
This is what happens when you allow corporations to pay to play in politics. If you're daft to what's going on, look into campaign finance.
