  • The painter Peter Doig spoke with artist and curator Matthew Higgs, director of the influential alternative art space White Columns in New York, at Falmouth School of Art. This Groundwork event took place on Saturday 26 May 2018.
Peter and Matthew have known each other since the early 1990s and talked about their shared histories - as artists, friends, and curators - through the agency of a selection of Peter Doig’s works made over the course of his three-decade career.
Supported by funding through Arts Council England’s Ambition for Excellence scheme, Groundwork was organised by CAST in partnership with Kestle Barton, Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange and Tate St Ives. The programme, which ran between May and September 2018, had four strands: a season of international contemporary art, field trips, residential workshops and an ambitious learning programme. Love Peter Doig. But I’m surprised that the interviewer showed the exact SAME four paintings that I saw in a previous interview online where they asked the SAME questions resulting in Peter answering in pretty much the same way, although to his credit, he came up with some different stories, good for him. Now this is an artist with such a long and varied body of work, why would this organization choose the same tiny selection of Doig paintings as the other British presentation several years earlier, ask identical questions and make a similar video?
At least Peter Doig is an original.
