  • Our next stop on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is the Keweenaw Peninsula, which was the site of the first copper boom in the United States. We spent two days road tripping around the peninsula, seeing historic towns, going into a mine, eating delicious treats, seeing beautiful views, and learning history.

The places you went to are the popular places there’s tons of mines, abandoned places, haunted places, historical sites. If you go to the main hospital in Hancock there’s many pics and info about the medical industry way back then, in fact my grandma worked at the st Joseph hospital (when it was a hospital) on Michigan st and w water st but then she passed away at the main hospital in 2003.

I remember going to school walking through snow tunnels in 1979 when it snowed 390". The next time you are there you need to take a few days off and hike Isle Royal to see Moose and hear the wolves howl at night. On your next adventure make sure to eat a Pasty, stopover at Tahquamenon Falls then over to where I use to work the summer on Mackinac Island. The best time to see the Northern lights is late October and early November. You may want to get out of there in the next three weeks before the snowfall. Thank you for the nice video.

The minerals museum at Michigan Tech is worth the two days it takes to see it all. They only sell two day tickets! My wife and I are both experienced geologists, although mostly soft rock experience. Some of her schooling was in lower Michigan, but they took field trips. This is a classical locality every geologist has heard of. We had a great busman’s holiday on the Keweenaw Peninsula! The Porcupine Mountains are an extinct volcanic complex BTW!

My grandfather grew up in Calumet Michigan and when I was 6 or 7 he took me there like every year. But he did mine with his dad when he was a kid, but he ended up going back to school. He told me soooo many story’s. But sadly he past away November 2020 due to COVID. But me and my grandma went 2021, 2022 and last year. Hopefully we can continue to go every year for him. His parents were buried there and we put his ashes between his real parents because he always wanted to be by them, but he wanted to be cremated. But he’s a Veteran he fault North Korea and a Purple Heart and downtime Calumet they put those flags of Veterans and other wars. So his daughter ended up put his up and when we saw that last year we were sad because we wished he was still here to see his flag up about his Purple Heart. I love to go up there because it’s so peaceful and all lot of fun to explore.

And then all the forest roads and snowmobile trails from one end of the Keeweenaw from Houghton, Lake Linden, Gay, Lac-la-belle's sauna "party hut" (before the ski slope was built), to the tip on high rock point, back to the old Mariner North before it burned down it was rustic, like you were in an old clipper ship eating seafood. This may be my 2nd Gilmore Girl reference of the summer, but the start of this episode sounded like it was going to make for great drinking game... every time you say 'Copper Boom' 🤣 but then the phrase disappeared! 🤷‍♀️ I love that they let you take dogs in the mine - how was Kona was the skunk? Loved the Bakery you went to. The brownies looked delicious and the caramel looked so gooey, I'm with you Kathryn, so much better that way! If you guys liked Fort Wilkins, next time you make it over this side of the pond, you might like a place called 'Beamish'. It's about 10 minutes up the road from where I grew up, and similarly, it's quite interactive, staff in period costume, but you get around the outdoor museum on old Victorian trams or buses.

Another great video! You kids are awesome. Being a Michigander, I very much enjoyed seeing my favorite places UP there! The first time I camped in Fort Wilkins State Park, the campsite next to mine had a bear trap set up. That was fun, especially being in a tent, with a dog! There were bear sightings, in the park, the three days I was there. Yikes!
The Keweenaw Peninsula was actually a peninsula. The end of the waterway, by the lighthouse you had in your video (by McLean State Park) was connected. That is a man made waterway.
Calumet is a pretty awesome, historic town. Too bad you hit it on a Monday with the NP stuff closed. Not if, but when you come back to the area, check out the historic Calumet Theater. It was designed after Ford’s Theater, where Lincoln was shot. The acoustics are awesome. On the tour I took, they were tuning a piano on the stage. You could hear a normal conversation up in the top of the second balcony as if they were next to you. Amazing place in terms of architecture as well. The paintings on the ceiling, simply awesome.
The Italian Hall Dusaster happened in Calumet as well. Interesting reading about it here: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_Hall_disaster.

Thank you - I'm very happy to be of help! In fact, I could not be happier with a CZcams video than I am with this, so forgive me if I have plenty to say (multiple comments). I also had a similar experience in that I woke up the morning I was going to check out the Keweenaw Peninsula and I realized there was too much to do! I wound up prioritizing hiking, although I did get some mining history in (see prior comment). Now that I've done the trails myself, I'm going to double-down on the Bare Bluff Trail and Montreal Falls suggestions. Both of those trails are gorgeous, especially Montreal Falls where you can sit in the middle of the falls and watch the falls empty into Lake Superior. Next time you come through, you'll want to remember these. (Watch out for Bare Bluff's 200-foot descent through a rock scramble!)

Jampot: This is awesome you made it there! I actually had to have this suggested to me. As soon as all my fellow Michiganders knew I was in Keweenaw, I started getting bombarded with Jampot nudges. So I went. I bought a lot of goodies for some relatives, and my uncle was quick to tell me the almond sugar cookies were the best cookies he's ever had. I tend to shy away from partaking myself due to my peanut allergy, which sets up one of the best compliments I can give you: I love your videos despite the fact I can't eat half of what you guys eat! (But if you have other peanut allergy fans, I have tips: 88 Acres protein bars for hiking and Gerbs sunflower seeds.)

So sorry to hear you have a peanut allergy, that is such a bummer! We are glad the sight of us eating nut products doesn't scare you away though 😄

I think we both got lucky with the bugs. The UP was dry in August (some waterfalls like Hungarian Falls and Laughing Whitefish Falls were just a trickle), and so there weren't the swarms that I saw back in May. Thank you for including Fort Wilkins!! I ran out of time before I could get there, and it is now officially on my list. If there was one suggestion I could have made to you with the experience I now have, it's this: watch the sunset over Lake Superior from the copper mill ruins at Freda (due west of Houghton). It's the perfect combination of mine history and sunset-viewing. It was a guess on my part; I figured a mill ruin facing west on the lake would work, and it exceeded expectations. I think only me and a few Michigan Tech students that were there know this. OK, with that, I think I'm done. Thank you again! I'm absolutely thrilled and you haven't even made it yet to Pictured Rocks or to my home peninsula!

Great video, that is a beautiful part of Michigan, a dear friend was born and raised in Calumet and she kept a small trailer in a campground on Lake Superior for her summer home. Sadly cancer took her a couple years ago. I live just off Hwy 41 in Florida and some years back traveled on it to the very northern end near Fort Wilkins state Park. That was an adventure through eight states and would love to try it again one day! Be safe, happy camping, can't wait till your next video. Trying some UP pasties maybe??
