I had to put my Beloved Pumpkin to sleep New Years Day, 1/1/2024 now about 6 hrs ago She had kidney disease and really was sick the last few days. My Son helped me make the decision, she was 17 her birthday was in January. The Vet said her kidney level were bad, she was very weak, would have had to keep her in hospital for 2 to 3 days with all kinds of tests etc. The Vet said she was very sick. I held her , told her how much I Loved her, she was my Faithful Companion, my Darling Love, my Pumpkin God this is so hard. I feel sick, I can’t eat. I prayed on it, I just knew she was slipping away. The Love of our Pets runs so deep. Rest In Peace my sweet Girl, Until we meet again I Love You Always and I will miss you everyday. Mommy🙏❤️🙏

Two hours ago I had to put my 17 year old cat, Tobey, to sleep. He couldn't urinate anymore. The doctor said that they could drain his bladder, stay at the vet's office to be monitored but she couldn't guarantee that it wouldn't happen again due to his age. My heart is broken as I sit here with tears running down my face. For those of you who gave this video a thumbs down, I guess you've never had the love of an animal. I feel sorry for you.

And my issue is, I will eventually have to go through this heartache, twice. And, I can not even imagine who would give this extremely informative, and caring video, a thumbs down. Again, I am sorry for your loss. One thing that I do know for sure, it will eventually get easier. You will never be totally free of your loss. But, it will definitely get better...God bless you. I had to put my 15 year old Boxer, Troy to sleep. He left at 6:57PM yesterday. He was having mobility problems. We’ve been helping him to stand up. There were good and bad days these past couple of weeks. Yesterday, he made some wolf sounding noise, staring at me. Then, he got up and walked all the way to the back of his room and laid down with his back facing me 😢. I stood there watching him till 3AM. Yesterday, he could get up. Watching him struggle with getting up I took him to the vet who stated that she could run some bloodwork and monitored him but his back legs wouldn’t get better and did t guarantee that he would help him due to his age. I haven’t been able to stop crying, it’s 3Am and I can’t sleep. I totally understand you. I’m in tears as I’m writing 💔

Had to put my dog down today after 15 years. In my heart I believe it was time but it feels so awful and the worst part is just not knowing for sure if it was the right thing or right time to do it. Could they have bounced back? Were they really in pain or was I just imagining it? The vets we had were really great and this video really helped ease my mind. She is in a better place and is truly not suffering anymore. Keeping her here longer would have been selfish. Still it doesn’t make it easy and I hope anyone going through this and is doubting their decision, knows that the choice they made was the right call.
This video truly felt like therapy for me. I’m very thankful

Every time we have lost a pet, we bring in another to live and care for. Humans and animals need one another on another level different from humans and humans. I went through the same thing you did but I didn't second guess myself due to the fact that I had that problem before and all I had done was make my poor dog suffer more while trying to hang onto it instead of letting it go, it's hard but the first time taught me a lot and I started to realize that if a dog has a problem that can't be reversed it is time to say good bye and not let the dog suffer. But it still hurts because you love your dog and spent so much of your life with it, but always remember that and you did the right thing because you loved your pet.

I'm struggling with feeling that I made a mistake euthanizing my 10 year old cat. He was suspected of having cancer, but a biopsy was inconclusive. Then he suddenly had what seemed to be a spinal stroke, leaving his rear paralyzed. Later I learned that a spinal stroke is somewhat rare, but also possible to partially or mostly recover from with physical therapy. I thought I was saving my cat from suffering paralysis only to die from a tumor. But he wasn't in pain and a specialist might have solved the original problem or at least positively identified the problem. Now I will never know and it torments me. It doesn't give me solace knowing that I'll eventually feel better. It does help to know I'm not alone, and I can accept that we humans sometimes make mistakes. I just wish I could be sure either way.

I never thought that I would become so emotional at that death of my canine. In the last three years of her life, I prayed to God that, at the time of her death, I would be at her side, that her death would be painless, and that it would be swift. All three requests were met, but I wasn't ready for the suddenness of her death. I had brought her into the Vet, for her health had been declining. Within twenty minutes the Vet was discussing euthanasia with me and, by the end of the hour, my great friend was dead. To this day, I cannot speak of her without becoming emotional. A huge part of me died with her that day.

We have a tough time because we love them so very, very much. You know this, I know. And there is no easy way round it. Since our animal family can't tell us how they feel, that makes euthanasia a more difficult decision. But I've waited "too long" one time, and vowed not to again. I don't know where you live, but here in Ohio our winter weather is coming fast. My old dog, she cannot endure the ice, and I cannot endure the thought of her falling and really hurting herself. Day after tomorrow she will be put to sleep. Give yourself time to bawl like a calf whenever you need too. Tears change with time, and they always seem to clean-up things inside.

The explanation about the reserve capacity of the organs was very helpful. 😺After my cat was diagnosed with total kidney failure, the only thing that was going to save him was emergency dialysis and then a kidney transplant. By that point I had already taken him to three animal hospitals and spent about $2,000. Doing the dialysis and transplant was going to cost tens of thousands of dollars. So I really didn’t have much choice at that point. Of course, I stayed with him during the procedure. I couldn’t imagine dying alone. He was my best friend. 😿

    • @sciencenotstigma9534
      @sciencenotstigma9534 Před rokem +1

I spent tens of thousands on my pet, and now my family is in a terrible bind. I’m not stupid. I don’t believe I would have survived leaving my abusive marriage, and a life threatening illness that followed, without him. He didn’t leave my side in 5 months I could not get out of bed, with a serious infection. I have autoimmune disease. As soon as I recovered, he developed hyperthyroidism, as well as his kidney disease, then cancer. I stayed home with him for a month, and retiring work 2 days after he was euthanized. Still, I waited until his body couldn’t process food and water and his bloodstream was being poisoned by drinking from his dish. I don’t know what I did to deserve such a beautiful gift of time with him. There are times I could not have missed a day of work, and could not allow my pet to die alone. There are times in my life when I could not come up with $300 to save the life of a beloved pet. I didn’t get that long goodbye those times, and I hope I did the right thing for them. It is hard to see the virtue in ourselves that is so evident in others. I believe, with all my heart, that you did what you were able, to ease his suffering. I’m sure he felt your good intentions and undying love, in his last moments. 💕

Thank you for bringing up the financial aspect. My cat has Chronic Kidney Disease, and this week it suddenly progressed to advanced and his prognosis changed to 6 months. But now he's not eating and he's getting severely dehydrated even with fluids, so he may only have a couple days.
He's a fighter, but I don't want him to keep fighting if all of his days are gonna be in pain, or if I have to watch him starve to death.
But also, I have to consider the financial aspect. I can barely afford the care he now needs, and I even had to decline getting him in tomorrow morning for an all day IV because I can't take anymore time off work. I feel so guilty for having to factor in money into this decision, but it is a huge factor. I want to wait until he's ready, but I don't know if I'll ever know he's ready.

Owners need to stick to the reality of the situation. Sometimes you just have to let them go. The quality of life isn’t there. I resent the veterinarians who suggest blood transfusions, chemotherapy for bone or liver cancer, etc etc. They guilt the owners into more extensive testing, procedures and expensive non value added treatments. This equals emotional abuse and assures a hefty vet bill regardless of the outcome. And suffering of your pet. I had a 17 year old hound who was in advanced congestive heart failure and the vet put him on life support and wanted to refer me to a heart specialist? Really? I asked the dog be euthanized...

I just went through losing my little 16-17 year old pom/papillon mix. We kept going back to the vet with blood work, antibiotics, blahblahblah... and 10 days ago, I took her in because we were exhausted (she and I), trying to get her to eat... ANYthing! She was so tiny and losing weight. Well, the vet FINALLY did a quick ultrasound and there it was; the majority of her tiny liver was infiltrated with tumor. Then the vet said...we don't have to do it today; there's medication we can try to help her eat. She was already on Cerenia and worn out. It made me CRAZY to know how bad she felt with nausea. I had to let her go and wish I'd made that decision a month ago... or MORE! Hurts like hell. I don't know WHY that initial injection they give in the muscle (before the final one) has to be so painful; I'm still crying, just thinking about THAT!

That's a tough scenario to go through. I kind of want a vet to give me all of my options but also have the experience and empathetic intelligence to tell me straight up if euthanasia would be the kindest option. Seems you were visiting an unethical vet if they're pushing such treatment that is palliative but forces your beloved animal to struggle in a way that doesn't buy time that will be comfortable and happy.
On another note, wow! If you had a 17 yr old hound, that's amazing! That dog was in a good home, evidently.

I think I waited to long my 130lb Rotwieler was 90lbs, his big flat pan head was now pointed from the muscles in his head deteriorating, he pooped while sleeping, but he still had that love, he would still fetch his ball 5 or so times in the garage which was a small area I had to give him being he had no control over his bowels. He still loved going bye bye. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever been through. Anyone who saw him thought he was severely neglected but it was the total opposite. I just couldn’t let him go. My dad is no longer suffering and even though he died suddenly and I'll never see him again, at least he isn't in pain anymore. We need information that is simple to understand, well explained, and delivered in a calm, reassuring manner. I now know not to rush, panic. My girl Jazzy does go up and down. My cat is only 7 years old and he's my first cat and most importantly best friend besides my wife. My wife and I got him and he's been the only thing in our life that has never disappointed us and he's providing so much company in our lives. I tell him thank you every week and I get sad he can't outlive me. It really breaks my heart that I'll have to drive him to the vet for sleep one day 😭😭😭😭😭😭 I'm sorry for you guys who are losing your friend soon. I'll give my cat a big hug for you guys

My longtime friend and companion Cola passed away today due to kidney failure. Im so devastated. Pets aren’t just pets, they are family. He was my best friend for 15 years. Got him when I was 5. I appreciate the kind words at the beginning brother. I found him in a barn as a little kitten, would have been coyote food.

Yeah, I've got a cat suffering from kidney failure right now. She was abandoned by her mother as a kitten before she was weaned during a rainstorm, and my grandmother plucked her out of the gutter, adopted her and raised her into adulthood. Sadly my granny passed away several years ago, and it looks like her kitty is about to join her soon.
She hides from us now, and wants to spend her time outside despite having always been an indoor cat since adoption. My grandfather and I both think it's her own way of suffering alone/ going on an elephant walk to death but we're gonna show her as much love as we can while we can.

@@freespace2dotcom A wonderful & compassionate comment ! So sorry to read this ! Bless your late grandmother for rescuing that cat & raising as an indoor cat !💖 It's never easy ! I'll pray for your cat's peaceful end & you & your grandfather & your family's good health & happiness. Kidney failure is aweful ! I lost one of my cat for that ,too ! It was a lower urinary tract disease went to an acute kidney failure ,then years later ,a distended bladder, then kidney failure ,then a heartattack. It was so sad & aweful, but he died in my arms ! He told me that he loved me before his death ( slow blinking at me several times ! )even though he was in the excruciating pain ! Who said cats are not appreciative ! Cats are so misunderstood ! THANK YOU, for speaking on the waxing & weaning of health. It makes perfect sense, though I am still haunted, to this day, nearly 4-years later, if I made the right decision, as my baby had a brain tumor, could not see, was having both tonic/clinic & now partial-focal seizures and finally stopped eating & drinking for days, before I could get him into my Vet to give him the ultimate gift of kindness.
The night before his death, I made him a Ribeye steak, and FINALLY ATE, and even drank a little - I still beat myself up and think, what if I had just keep buying him those steaks, would he have continued to have ate, and been ok? I KNOW this is not intellectually true, but that "betrayal fee," it STILL brings me to tears, even to this day!
So thank you for giving me another bit of reassurance, that I DID DO THE RIGHT THING FOR HIM, even though my heart is💔forever.

Thank you. It has been about 5 wks. now, and I still struggle EVERY day, missing her...reminiscing over her sweet personality. Our little yorki-poo seemed to suddenly become ill and went down so fast. Too different vets said she had cancer. After 2nd vet's diagnosis, within days she had become paralyzed in her back legs and became totally incontinent. It was SOOOOO hard to see her like that. She was our baby (a rescue) and though it was difficult, what the Doc said is true....pet parents, please don't let them suffer just because you don't want to feel bad yourself. I know the pain. Everyday I cry over and over and over, but we loved her too much to prolong her suffering. Good news is, we look forward to being with her again in that Land where there is no sorrow, no separations, and no death. God has prepared a wonderful place for His own!!

But now I know it was probably just about the right time as poor puss was struggling to do his normal things, he was drinking so much water but yet refused all his food and just sat staring towards the wall. The steroid injections and appetite pills no longer worked. He had likely lymphoma. He was at least 18 yrs old.

After watching this video and talking to my wife it has helped us come to terms with the fact it is time for us to say goodbye to our beautiful old man Merlin. He has had a good long life, with lots of love. He was still happy when he was loosing his sight, having trouble with his joints and even the times he would just look confused or staring off into space. But he is a tired old boy and we need to give him the love and respect that he deserves. I know his brother Chester will miss him as much as we will 😢

I just had to put my girl down . What finally made my mind up when at 4 in the morning she woke me up with loud three yelps !😢😰😨😥😭She had trouble walking and she would fall but I helped her up . I have wood floors . She was on meds for her kidneys and CBD oil and tramadol pain meds . I gave her two that morning when she yelped!! I looked her in the eyes and she looked at me . I said is it time baby , is it time ? Two times she fell and just laced there in my hand , like a seizure . No shaking but her eyes staring up at mine . Both times I helped her to her cot . She had just quit eating a few days before. I tried boiled chicken and rice , soft dog food , fresh pet . She would only drink her water . She did eat some of her fresh pet treats . But she couldn’t live on that !! It was the yelling that made me realize she had to be in pain ! The vet said it could be dementia . But I don’t believe that . I think she was in pain !! I didn’t want to put her down but I had to for her !! It was for her !! I wanted to keep her . The vet said I could but she would have to be on appetite stimulates and arthritis meds but it would just postpone the inedible!! I didn’t want her to suffer . I felt I would be selfish . I did it for her and I stayed with her until the end ! All the way until she let out her last breath . I was kissing her face and telling her I loved her . They told me she could hear me on the sedative and feel my touches but could not respond . I hope that was true !! I couldn’t quit kissing her and telling her I loved her . I know when the vet put the stuff in , that was it ! But the five minutes on the sedative , I kissed and talked to her . Damn I’m having a hard time !! I can’t quit crying . I feel exhausted and up and down . I look for her . I hope I did the right thing by her . I thought I saw a tear on her eye . But the Dr said it was not a tear 😰😨😥😭😭😭😭😭she was 14 or 15 . I adopted her from the pound at age 4 . Husky mix

Thank you. I’ve been struggling for months about my situation with my sweet dogs. Both are at the end stage of life & I’m not sure what do; let them go to sleep together so the other isn’t lonely & concerned for her sister in the home & it’s the blind one that’d be left behind. as she is less critical, although she is an insulin dependent diabetic; takes 9.5U of U100 NPH Insulin, Long acting. Blindness has progressed & she can’t even see her dinner bowl right in front of her; I have to help her get started eating. I truly ❤ you both, Daisy & Lily.

I'm having to make this decision right now. My 9-year-old cat's kidneys are failing. She was doing alright for a few months thanks to subcutaneous fluids and a few medications, but this week she took a sudden downturn. I'm trying to decide if I should try and bring her back up, and probably go through this again in another few months, or if I should just let her go now. I love her so much, but I don't think she's enjoying her life anymore.

You already have, you are giving it a home, a loving home, a caring home...that's pretty much all any pet could ask for. You already have the emotional attachment, and you know it's coming. That does not make it easier, it makes you human. Unlike some of the stories of animal abuse...well, i'm sure you get the picture.

🇨🇦 God bless you Sir. Our northern dog "Freddy" was brought down by my wife 13 years ago from Nunavut when he was a pup. Right off you could see he was special. He was amazingly smart and just so happy and good! He had a bond of love with my wife...followed her around and would never feel comfortable by himself. He was a joy in our lives. A year or so ago his back legs started to go but he kept on and was doing ok but couldn't jump up into the car anymore. At Christmas he had a bloated stomach and was having some pain but it seemed to pass. On New Years day it strangely occurred again and he would not lay down due to pain. Taken to an emerg vet clinic he was diagnosed with a twisted stomach - very serious surgery situation but due to his age and other issues the best decision was to put him down. Heart breaking as since he had been given pain medication and was his old happy self - this made things very difficult. We know it was the right decision but it is so hard not seeing him these days and we miss him terribly. God bless for a wonderful and caring video. You're a good fellow and thank you!

My senior kitty had severe kidney failure and liver cancer. She got vet help and medications for a few months, she was doing pretty good considering the circumstances. However one day she couldn't get up, she defecated on herself and couldn't clean herself. I of course helped all I could and waited a day or so cause I know the ups and downs. But there was no up anymore. It just kept getting worse, next day I made the decision to euthanize her. At the office I was just frozen in shock, it felt like a dream. Only once I got home and she wasn't there that it really set in. I still she'd so many years for her and it's been years. She got cremated. She is still with me in a special place in the house but it still feels so hollow without her.
