  • Well, here it is, New Jersey’s most secretive train and most risky train to catch. And for a good reason; this train only runs when there’s a ship in port in Leonardo, meaning that the train may make one round trip each day for a week or two, then won’t run again for a couple of months. I was aware of this move because my friend heard them heading out to the port earlier in the morning. I waited here for almost an hour before it arrived, and surprisingly nobody bothered me nor the other people I was with while we stood around waiting. Even though today was a good experience, I do not recommend trying to wait for this train unless you know exactly what you’re doing. As you can probably imagine, the Navy does not mess around, and making the wrong moves while around this area may land you in hot water. However, contrary to popular belief, it is legal to film this train from publicly accessible areas, but that does not guarantee that you won’t be questioned. Unfortunately, I cannot answer any questions regarding this train’s operations, as that is confidential.
    Power for this train:
    USN 3GS18B-R 65-00648

Nice job in the late 60's and early 70' they would have an open house in June at Earle. I remember they would have a train ride from the piers all the way to Colts Neck end of the base and back.

I’m surprised there wasn’t a navy police escort with this move. I was able to catch this train several years ago from my truck as I heard the horn when approaching the crossing. Very neat.

I hear this train often at night now, but it's been a long time since I've seen it in daylight while I'm out and about. Last time I saw the train it was accompanied by a police escort. Must have been a real spicy shipment that day. lol

There used to be a company of Marines stationed at Earle. Their job was to protect the base and guard train movements. Would have loved to have drawn that duty!!!

WRONG or partially wrong. The Marines at the site were there to guard nuclear warheads that were stored there. The warheads were removed after Gulf war 1 hence the Marines removed also. The Marines at that time were also guarding the conventional munitions stored there but they don't rate that same security alone.

I lived in Middletown for 17 years and had this line run through part of my neighborhood (along with NJT) and still only saw this train about 10 times. I remember when they would have police escorts

Is that train pulling ammo and guns? I was looking at the map of Earle on Google its very interesting all these little underground depots..I am guessing where all weapons are stored..now what's really cool is the train branches off to at least 50 or more of these little loading depots.. so interesting

You're not kidding about being hard to catch. Grew up in the area & my brother actually lived on Swimming River Rd. for over 10 years. We never saw a train go by in over 20 years. My mom worked for the Middletown School District & even though she was driving between schools never saw a car on the Navy Rd. Weird right? When I was in my 20's started sailing & was able to see the pier.

In the 1990's I did Navy reserve duty at Earle. I see they finally got some new engines. You should have seen what they used to use. Actually, those tracks are used regularly. They also use regular tractor trailers, too. You need to catch the sewer tank car train. That's the best catch. ( LOL )

I recently met the gentleman who is the chief of the NWSE rail operations. He was telling me about getting those two new Genset locos and how CSX clobbered the Navy for using the unused section of track that got them into the base. Crazy.

Thank you! This was a goal of mine for the past 7 years. Yesterday was the first time where everything fell into place perfectly, making this possible. Before this, I only saw the train once… two years ago… through a dense area of trees…

The road I am standing near is a public roadway. The road parallel to the tracks, however, is not public and you can get in big trouble for being on it.
