  • In this quick video guide I will show you how you can use your 3d printer as a laser engraver and I won't cost you more that 40$. Most of 3d printers are just an upgraded version of a laser engraver so If you own a 3d printer you basically have a laserengraver without the laser. Enjoy the video!

    Yoooo if anyone has scaling issues once you create the Gcode, be sure you're using inkscape version .91 or older otherwise there is a scaling issue

    Great video, l was in the process of converting my old Sunhokey to a laser cutter/engraver, when I found this video 🤓. I used an Ardiuno with a CNC shield instead of the board that came with the Sunhokey. The other thing that I noticed before firing up the laser, that the cooling fan on top was blowing down and had no thru flow, so I drill a few extra hole in the old hot end bracket, now it does two things for me, keeping the laser cool and it blows the smoke/fumes away from the material being cut. Thanks to you I was able to push thru and get my machine up and running.

    • @riskinhos
      @riskinhos Před 5 lety +1

      @@Cnddecor idk. I'm sure there would be a way to make it work. you just need the laser pointed down. in fact you can have a 3d printer head and the laser at the same time.
      you just need a switch and double the wiring. when you want laser or 3d printing just press a switch.
      sure it would require a lot more thinking and work and it's not as simple. but quite doable.

    Is there any reason why you can't fit the laser alongside the hot end, so you can change usage without messing about manually swapping them over ? For example, extend the hot end platform so the laser sits on the other side of the gantry ( missing the belt ), or at the side ( reducing the X axis ) - the fan restricts putting it infront of the hot end. Then add two switches to both the 12v power lines ( hot end and laser ) so you can have one on and one off. If the software works with either, it should recognise which is on.

    nice quick video on a laser conversion. but to anybody concidering this: please read the "legally required" safety precaution for class 3B lasers. and be super aware of anybody that may accidentally walk in.
    for all intents and the purpose of preventing most costly lawsuits, you best treat any high powered laser, like seeing the dot with ones bare eyes will instantly blind a person, and even indirect exposure scorches skin. it's not nearly that bad, but better be double safe.

    Great video! I have an old broken 3d printer a friend gave to me, makes more sense to buy a newer model than try to fix it, so I think I'm going to follow your example and convert this one to a laser cutter as well. I did notice one odd thing in your video, the fan for the laser blows down THROUGH the housing to cool it, yet when you mounted it flush to the plastic you essentially blocked the airflow so now the air can't flow down through the channel properly. Did you notice any unusual heating problems as a result?

  • @mdgluk
    @mdgluk Před 6 lety

    Thanks for the video. Great explained. I already decided to mount the laser on my anet a8. It works great but I'm having some problems. My laser does not turn off, although in my Gcode it puts M107 or M106 0 the laser starts on and generates the lines to pass to the figure and the back ones. On the other hand I do not understand very well the concept of where I adjust intensity. Is it only by speed or height, or by different passes? He believed that the laser only worked on or off. I feel if they are very basic questions but I can not find information.

    • @ozynz
      @ozynz Před 6 lety

      Not 100% sure, but thinking you should edit you gcode: M106 = S255 should turn the fan on full power, in this instance it would push 5 volts to the laser controller. M107 = S0 would turn the power off. example ->
      M05 S0
      G90
      G21
      G1 F3000
      G1 X22.475 Y0.2865
      G4 P0
      M03 S255
      G4 P0
      G1 F750.000000
      G2 X22.697 Y0.9368 I1.0634 J-0.
      G2 X23.6351 Y1.7874 I2.8573 J-2.2084
      G2 X24.4173 Y1.9631 I0.64 J-1.0201
      G2 X25.1782 Y1.6037 I-0.1568 J-1.3172
      G1 X25.
      In my Gcode above, I use M03 & M05, M03 would be the same as M106 & M05 would be the same as M107.
      saying that the first line calls M05 S0 = off, the seventh line calls M03 S255 = power on. If you are still having problems, post a snippet of your code, and someone will point you in the right direction.
      Understanding intensity -> if your laser have an adjustable lens, then turn it on and adjust the beam to the smallest point, use a piece of paper or whatever until you see that it is burning like Jake did in the video, to mark the 0 points of X & Y axis. If your laser doesn't have an adjustable lens, then you'll have to use Z axis to focus the beam to a position that it will start cutting.
      Cheers!

    just to be clear. this is an engraver not an cutter, right? what wattage of laser would i need in order to cut let's say wood?

    • @ozynz
      @ozynz Před 5 lety

      It can cut, with some effort, factors would include which laser you purchased, and the thickness of the material (wood). I've cut wooden rules (soft pine) at full power (405 blue laser) with several passes, also overscaned the material (ruler) to prevent excessive burning at the beginning and end of the cut(s).

      +KAROLISA21 hi, for cutting wood, I would recommend you buying at least 1.5-2W laser :)

    Amazing ! I'll be trying this soon ! Thanks a lot for sharing this !
    I'd like to ask , what is the distance between the bed and the lens of the laser ? and how do u set it with the Z axis of the printer?
    Also, the TTL pins are supposed to be for PWM functionality , aren't they ?
    I have seen some SPI interface pins on MKS where people attach their SERVO motors which are again driven by PWM. So is there a way by which u can get that PWM to those pins of MKS and use the TTL of the laser ?

      I installed my laser yesterday as described in the video. It works. My printer is a modified BQ Prusa i3 Hephestos. I have 110mm distance from print bed to laser lense (20mm offset from nozzle to print bed, that means 90mm from nozzle to laser lense). I am using a capacitive sensor for the z-min. In the gcode from inkscape, I added G28 (was missing?) and G1 Z20 at the beginning. Before starting the job, I jog the z-axis above the part I want to laser. During the z-homing I put a flat piece of aluminium on top of the part, to get z-min on top of the part. If I want to focus the laser, I use pronterface and send the M106 S255 to the printer. I have installed a switch, with which I can change between the laser and the printer cooler fan. In this way, I can send the M106 and manually turn on / off the laser on the printer during the focus-procedure.

    The issue I have is that I want to maintain usability of all my d8-10 ports, in previous versions of Marlin I've seen options for m03-05 spindle/laser control and output to a different pin on the bottom edge of the ramps board but I the newer version of Marlin that I downloaded the options for laser/spindle and m03 gcode are missing, does anyone know why this is the case and if there's a way to incorporate m03 commands instead of the m106 command to run the laser so I don't need to worry about editing my gcode?
