    This song has always painted a picture of a man who's deeply depressed and contemplating suicide.
    "He stays home from work this time
    He never really told his wife"
    He stays home from work and doesn't tell anybody. Strikes me as something somebody who's made up their mind to take their own life would do if they don't want someone to stop them.
    "He never really told a lie but this time he decides that it's alright.
    It's alright."
    He's never really liked before, but he decides to start now by not telling people he's staying home? Again seems like something somebody who plans to end their life would do. He decides alright, perhaps because of the common thought among the depressed that when he's done the deed "the world will be better off without him?" He thinks by telling this lie and allowing himself to end his life he's doing his loved ones and himself good thus justifying the lie?
    "No one really knows his mind and no one knows behind his eyes.
    The man deserves a medal
    But he's never really won a prize before."
    The sad truth about many/most depressed people. Others don't understand them, they don't know what happens in their heads. He's done some exceptional things that have gone unrecognized and that's driven him further down this dark path.
    "He goes to lock the door."
    This line gives me chills. He's locking the door and effectively sealing his fate. Nobody can stop him now.
    "He is falling
    And though he knows it's not
    The world looks down and frowns."
    This part might be a bit of a stretch but he is "falling" to the ground after doing it? He knows deep down this is wrong, but depression has taken over his mind and the larger part of him now thinks this is the right decision. Again, he feels he's making the world a better place, but he's actually doing the opposite-"the world looks down and frowns."
    "Get up Johnny boy, get up Johnny boy,
    Get up cause the world has left you lying on the ground."
    In the p.o.v. of one of his loved ones? They want him to recover, to not make this horrible decision to kill himself because the world has him "lying on the ground." They want him to get up because it does get better.
    "You're my pride and joy, you're my pride and joy.
    Get up Johnny boy because we all need you now.
    We all need you now."
    Again from one of his loved ones, just continuing to explain that he does have value. Another thought that seems to creep into the mind of many depressed-that they have no worth to others. But the truth is that his family and loved ones really need him, he's just consumed by this horrible disease.
    "Someone said where you going
    Someone said to you goodbye"
    People do care about him. They want to know where he's going and what he's doing. Perhaps this person is saying goodbye fully unaware that this could be the very last goodbye between the two of them.
    "They deflect the disrespect when they say that they blame it on the times
    They blame it on the times."
    They're blaming this depression of his on hard times in the world in general? Kind of telling him to get over it because everyone is a little unhappy? Obviously this is the exact wrong thing to tell somebody who's depressed because it's a totally different kind of sadness, which led him to what happened in verse 1.
    We all know you're qualified to fix a chair and love your wife
    They all know you're qualified but they lie when they blame it on the times.
    And we blame it on the times.
    He's a fully functioning human being. He can do things everyone else can do. These people who are blaming it "on the times" see that he can still function and assume nothing is really wrong with him.

      it either means that he has some love-hate relationship with his suicidal thoughts or life
      or the love for his wife. knowing that he actually don't need to prove his feelings but having doubts if this is enough and/or even thinks that he isn't good enough.
      in the meaning of searching for a greater purpose that may be enough motivation to stay alive

      Ok I'm sorry this is the last one... I think that "I will carry all your names" is more like Tyler wants someone to be with him through his different faces or like moods. For example, one moment he's happy and the next he is confused or sad and those are considered different "names"... I think thats kinda Tyler's mindset because it kinda reminds me of blurryface and how Tyler (at least right now) has 2 names

      The Amazing Icon I think, it might be that he is questioning his sexuality, and that he deserves a medal for hiding that, and that also show where the world looks down and frowns, and he's falling in love, so I think the staying home, and locking the door is more metaphorical, than actual.

    Going along with the idea of the song being about someone with mental illness or feeling defeated by the world, the lie that he tells in the line "but this time he decides that it's alright" could be something along the lines of "I'm fine" in response to someone asking him if something's wrong.

  • @higorlelles
    @higorlelles Před 4 lety +1

    I think the song is based on "the outsiders" - a book from the 60's. It became a movie in early 80's and the story is focused on two teeneger boys. They commited murder and they need to get away from their normal life. One of them, Johnny - who've done the dirty job, suffers from depression. His family is not supportive at all and always blames him for being so ~weak. So Ponyboy, the second boy (actually he's the main character), helps him to deal with his demons while they're trying to find a way out of this whole messy situation.
    I think Tyler uses Ponyboy's point of view to tell Johnny how he is important and strong. And we all can relate to Johnny. This is Tyler freaking talking to us. If you know how the story ends, you know how deep this song is.

      Almost every song Tyler writes has some kind of Biblical message. They don't put themselves in the "Christian music" genre, but his writing is DEEPLY influenced by his faith. It's pretty obvious. XD You can write Christian songs/Christian music without being a Christian band, and that's what he does. He just leaves it open so that other people can take it in a way that helps them most, if they aren't Christian.

    I always thought Johnny was a nickname for John Doe sort of? Like he’s referring to anyone and everyone dealing with these feelings.
    Also, in the first verse where he feels it’s ok to lie I’ve always thought he’s just having a bad day, maybe with his mental health issues (whatever those can be). Just one of those days people don’t feel like getting out of bed.
    And the part about knowing it’s enough but the world looks down and frowns can refer to the fact that everyone thinks we have to follow the same timeline: study, marry, have kids and when some people think differently they’re looked down upon.
    In the part where he’s talking to Johnny it could also be him represented by this Johnny boy. Maybe he does love himself so he is his own pride and joy... It can be sort of pretentious but not (?
    Loved the video btw

  • @PyrokeneticsarejusthotterOG

    I do agree with you for most of your interpretation! I believe that the entire album is a testimony, and Johnny Boy is Jesus, and him being crucified. When he stays home and locks the door he is praying in the garden alone. The vet up Johnny boy I think is either God or Tyler saying “get up, we need you!” Like he rose from the dead. The I will carry all your names and shame is Johnny boy speaking, because he took all of our punishment. And the definition of Johnny boy is a slay term for someone who is perfect. The one who betrayed him was Judas. That’s my interpretation of it. I really liked your video!

    @dannyboy7479 Před 5 lety

    You know what I think it's about? I think it’s about a guy (Johnny): he’s pretty normal, has a nice wife that he loves, probably a nice house and a good job, but he’s severely depressed and he’s having a difficult time functioning as a normal human being (as one does).
    He doesn’t want to tell his wife about it though, because he doesn’t want her to worry, or he just doesn’t think she’ll understand:
    He’s so weighed down with trying to make everybody think he’s okay, but he’s not! He’s constantly trying to push down his feelings, so that they don’t interfere with his responsibilities, as a husband, possibly as a father, and at work. Today, it’s too much for him. He can’t go to work today. He’s falling apart emotionally, and he just can’t handle going to work. So, he stays at home. He lies to his wife (just this one time) to explain why he’s staying home. Again, he doesn’t want her to worry, and he wants her to know he’s safe.
    Today, he’s given up because it’s just too much to go on
    No one knows what he’s going through! No one understands why he’s skipping out on work. They don’t understand why he feels depressed! They don’t understand why he’s being ‘weak’! They don’t understand why “Johnny Boy” can’t just stop being sensitive and GET OVER IT!
    What if they did know. What if he finally opened up to them and told them that he just felt hopeless and sad all the time. They’d scoff. They don’t understand how it sucks away your ambition, your love, your hope, and all the self-esteem you ever thought you had.
    Despite all the pain that he’s been fighting Tyler Joseph commends this character for making it this far. This song is cheering him on because Tyler understands. The rest of the world doesn’t understand. They think that Johnny Boy hasn’t done anything special. There’s nothing special about “fix[ing] a chair and love[ing] your wife”. However, Tyler knows he “deserves a medal” for continuing to try his best every second of the damn day, despite the wrenching pain he feels. He deserves a medal for doing everyday normal things because they demand every ounce of strength he has.
    “You're my pride and joy, you're my pride and joy”
    Tyler (who obviously struggles with depression) pleads for Johnny Boy to keep going. Johnny Boy represents hope for everyone suffering from anxiety, depression, thoughts of suicide, ect. His life tells them that we CAN keep going. We need HIM to keep going! “If he can’t make it through, then I can, too.” It’s the same reason all the Twenty One Pilots’ fans need Tyler Joseph to stay alive! His continuation gives us all hope that we can survive.
    Johnny Boy is someone who Tyler Joseph can look up to for hope. Tyler looks up to Johnny Boy because he is making it through.
    Tyler wishes that he could take away the misunderstandings and disappointment people have for Johnny Boy, this shown when he said, “I will carry all your names [people call you] and I will carry all your shame”. He wishes that people wouldn’t “look down and frown” at Johnny Boy’s small successes.
    Honestly I’m crying right now because this song means so much to me. This fictional character is so immensely beautiful. I know I talk about him as though he were real, but that’s because the hope he represents is real.
    “Get up Johnny boy, get up Johnny boy
    Get up 'cause the world has left you lying on the ground
    You're my pride and joy, you're my pride and joy
    Get up Johnny boy because we all need you now”
    Stay alive frens |-/

    this song is about suicide. he stays home from work this time he never really told a lie but this time he decides that it's alright. this initially could just have to do with depression and staying home from work is something that is easy to excuse when you're depressed. deciding to lie about staying home from work is something that you'll make an excuse to do but the reason I don't think this is just a normal day is because he goes to lock the door. this illustrates hiding something from the world not wanting someone to see in where to get in. he is falling in love he knows it's enough. this part of the song is him remembering the good times. get up Johnny boy get up Johnny boy get up cuz the world is left you lying on the ground. here Tyler is saying that the world is also responsible. you're my pride and joy you're my pride and joy. Tyler speaks from the perspective of God. we all need you now. still from God's perspective. emphasizing that every life is Meaningful that every life matters. the second verse is what release cements the fact that a suicide has been committed. someone said away you go and someone said to you goodbye they deflect the disrespect when they say that they blame it on the time. these are statements that someone would make at a funeral. Tyler is stating that it's not good enough to deflect or to just blame it on Society or the world we live in when someone takes their life. the song ends with I will carry all your names and I will carry all your shame. this is Tyler speaking about living for someone after they're gone. speaking about remembering someone and remembering what they went through. he ends by making a plea. he's pleading with Johnny Boy, that's the whole point of the song, and in this he's God and Johnny boy is all of us. and God is constantly asking us to keep going.
    Tyler often talks about how important is to just keep going. I will say that I lost my best friend to suicide last summer and that my interpretation might come from a very personal place. I do believe however that this is Tyler's intent.

    I looked at it and I have a theory. The song is from the perspective of an omniscient spirit who's job is to watch over Johnny Boy. He watches Johnny Boy go behind his wife's back (which he still loves btw) and cheats on her when his wife is off at work. His heart is torn and he starts lying and maybe hitting his wife, which is also partly due to his abusive childhood, explaining that the "world has left you lying on the ground." The spirit wants him to succeed and knows other wants him to rise up from his pass troubles, clearing up the "You're my pride and joy" line. The spirit also says he will protect Johnny mentally saying that he will take his shame. Also with the medal lines the spirit thinks that the act Johnny is pulling off is amazing and morally wrong, and that's why he's never got one. And the world frowning and blaming him is due to him maybe starting to lash out at more people. Overall Johnny Boy is in an abusive love triangle and causing everyone in the middle major despair, including his guardian angel.

    personally i think that this song is about the clique. Like tyler is telling us that no matter what life throws at us and how hard life gets, we can and should always keep moving because tyler loves us. his fans are his pride and joy and he doesnt want us to be torn down by the world. he creates music to help his fans get out of depression. idk, was that good?

    My opinion on the song is that it's about a man who's made it thru his life without a ton of problems but when he gets older the insecurities start to catch up to him and he starts to go thru this stage of realization where for example you can throw other songs into it like car radio it's about a time in Tyler's life where he wasn't distracted by something so he started to think and that is what I think is going on in this song it's about a man who again grew up without a lot of difficulties and now that he's older he starts to think about the bad stuff in his life even tho it may not be that bad he feels insignificant and like he is able to live a life well but now he starts to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders and God is telling him that there's people around you who do care and your not insignificant to them and your not insignificant to me so get up you can do it
    And if you're reading this comment I just wanna say you are awesome and I hope you have some success in this because it's an amazing idea and CZcams is really lacking in good things and people that have an original idea.
    Again thank you, you're amazing and keep up the good work

    I think it's about a christian who is persecuted and ridiculed for his beliefs and he just gives up and can't handle it anymore and fall in love with just isolation and loneliness. People deflect the disrespect by saying, dude don't be so sensitive it's just the times, nobody believes that anymore.

    why didn't anyone think that this song could be about his father? your explanations are so true but listen this explanation with the thought of maybe it could be about his father. this song is old and maybe he wrote this when he was a teenager so he was living with his family at the time, he knew what was going on in the house and what was happening with his father. i mean, was he depressed or not? in the song there are lovely lyrical touches for this person so johhny boy had to be close person to him. i can't write a long explanation about this because english is not my mother language but im gonna write as i can. for example he said in the song "i will carry your names" maybe that means his surname. he said fixing chair and fixing things in the house generally dad's work so. pls see this comment im so confused if it is logical or not

  • @scaledandicytrench1419

    The depressed theory is correct. He knows what he has is enough but the world treats him like trash so he wants to be in solitude locks the door stays home from work. And I think we all know what most depressed people turn to when they don't want to feel pain, it's not porn, it's drugs .. (hence the chorus ) he needs to get up and go to work because he's wife and the people around him needs him.

    Hi! I love your pop song videos on twenty one pilots and I wanted to offer something you may not have considered. The audio for Johnny boy isn't very clear on all the lyrics, and so I watched many live performances of Johnny boy, and I think what Tyler is actually saying is "He has fallen enough, and he knows it's enough, but the world looks down, and frowns." "Enough" sounds very similar to "in love". Knowing this, I think it drastically changes the interpretation. What are your thoughts on this? I would love to hear. Thanks!

  • @twentynephanicsatthechemic7320

    I think that maybe Tyler is talking to all the people that are depressed and feel like they're not enough, And is saying "get up Johnny boy" as like, Get up, It'll get better, And the Name "Johnny Boy" Could be a mod friendly way of saying John Doe as in Just, Anyone really. But that's just my opinion.

  • @tatecooper2970
    @tatecooper2970 Před 6 lety

    So when I first heard this song (and still) believe that "johnny boy" is someone who killed themselves. it talks about him being home alone, locking the door, and they're yelling at him to give up, like they were too late. and it goes back to people "blaming it on the times" like this stuff just happens some times. so no one took him seriously. if you think about it like this when you listen again be open minded and see if you disagree.

  • @Mitch-md4tm
    @Mitch-md4tm Před 7 lety +4

    Love what you do! I think this song in my opinion is about Jesus, and the moments of how he died on the cross for the sake of all mankind. In first verse when it says he deserves a medal, but never really one a prize before. I believe Tyler is saying When Jesus died for everyone, he wasn't really acknowledged for something so significant. In the verse where it says he is qualified to fix a chair is a representation of when he was a carpenter and how he fixes us spiritually and mentally. His wife is the representation of the bride of Christ.
    When he says he is falling in love, he knows it's enough, the world looks down and frowns.
    I think when he died he knew his love for everyone would be enough and although not a whole lot of people believed in him. He believed in loved and continued to love them no matter what.
    During the chorus I will carry all your names and and carry all your shame. I think it's the moment when Jesus says it is finished taking everything past, present and future away from sin. It's a great song and yes a very difficult one to interpret but that's why I think the song means to me.

  • @anitagomez9100
    @anitagomez9100 Před 6 lety

    Nope you didn't explain anything about this song ...this song is so deep and so dark that you have to live it to understand it. What I feel like this song is about is from his wife point of view how she found johnny boy lying on the ground and is begging for him to get up because she needs him and when it says repeatedly that I will carry all your names and all your shames is like saying I will stay here to carry out your memories and your shame and what johnny boy was going through because when someone leaves your life so unexpected then you feel guilty and you reflect on every thing you ever said to that person if you said the wrong thing or if you could have done something different and all you have left is to carry that and what that person was going through will stay with you for the rest of your life and it is frowned upon in society so you feel bad on so many differnt levels. Even when someone asks you how did he die and when you have to answer that word it just makes it more complicated. Ive lost a lot of people and I think that for tyler to write songs about something so difficult I mean theres only one way to put it ...he has balls because I still can't talk about it and his music does help. So maybe the next time you want to have the lyrics figured out to a song I think you should put more time into it because theres more people in the comments who have more of a clue then what you posted in this video ...no hate just wanting to get my view across

    I think Tyler is just talking about a man who is very misunderstood, and no one understands that he is depressed, not even his wife. Still he can be a good husband and work hard and therefore no one sees what he is going through. What I’m confused about though is if Tyler is saying he should find a new love so that he will become more happy, because he sings, ”Johnny is falling in love” and then Tyler sings, ”get up Johnny boy”. I have a hard time beliving that Tyler would want to egg on Johnny to be unfaithful though, he is christian I mean, that doesn’t really makes sense to me. So my question is, what is Johnny falling in love with!?!?
